to think my colleague should just admit she is on weight loss injections?

At work we have all noticed Sally has lost a lot of weight in the past few months. She is always talking about diets and what she eats and does not eat anymore and makes a big deal about avoiding the biscuit tin in the kitchen. She keeps saying it is just willpower and cutting out snacks.

Last week I walked past her desk, her bag was open, and there was one of those weight loss injection pens in plain sight.

Now I cannot unsee it and every time she goes on about her self control it feels performative.

I am not saying she has to announce it to the whole office, but when she is preaching about anyone can do it if they just try it feels a bit dishonest.

AIBU to think she should either be upfront or just stop making a song and dance about how she has done it all naturally?

I've lost 5 stone in the past 18 months, not using WLI but I'm sure there are people who suspect I have and would love to get it out of me.
I don't really talk about my diet/exercise regimen because it's boring but I've had a few people really pry and obviously be unsatisfied with my calorie deficit and gym answer. It sounds like she's overcompensating because she's aware/believes she'll be judged for being on WLI.
Equally, if she's policing your food and commenting on what you eat you'd be perfectly justified in telling her to stop.

PinkArt · 11/08/2025 20:03

Reformed their characters 😂 Not changed their eating habits but reformed their fucking characters.

Exactly my point. Sally isn't saying, "I've changed my eating habits," she's talking about how much self control she now has and telling other people how easy it is to do the same. Sally is the one treating fat as a character flaw.

TheSilentSister · 11/08/2025 20:46

MJ isn't the miracle drug that some people seem to think.
For the first few days of taking it, you get appetite suppression but this wears off before the next dose. You might feel like eating but you can't eat much, so you have to be careful what you do eat. You also have to exercise otherwise you won't get great results. There also might be side affects, some are quite mild, some not. It really does vary from person to person. The biggest results appear to be seen from those needing to lose the most weight.
It's not an easy option. There's willpower, reduced eating, exercise - all things you'd do normally - but with a boost. Some people need that boost.

How do you know she hasn't been diagnosed with diabetes or something else and been prescribed something? There's no reason to carry around a MJ pen.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 11/08/2025 20:47

Totally agree with a pp who said that weight loss injections still require self control. I'm not on them but a friend of mine is and she is still as obsessed with food as she ever was and has hardly lost any weight - it's so sad. She will say she feels sick the day after an injection so will only eat half a sausage roll rather than a whole one. Sometimes there is way more to weight problems - injections are absolutely not a magic wand.

usedtobeaylis · 11/08/2025 20:49

Apart from the fact she hasn't brought a Mounjaro pen to work to keep on her bag all day - it's none of your business. Leave her alone. She is clearly doing the work.

Ah maybe it’s in her bag as she doesn’t want anyone at home to find it? Partner/kids/whoever she lives with

Possibly
I know that no one else will go in my cabinet, as it’s only myself & husband who lives at home

OwlBeThere · 11/08/2025 20:51

I carry 2 pens with me one is an epi-pen as I’m anaphylactic to strawberries and tree nuts.
i also have my migraine relief medication on me usually.
so it could be either of those.

ruethewhirl · 11/08/2025 20:51

Why on earth would anyone think they were owed an explanation of how another person has lost weight?? YABU, OP. So much craziness around WLI at the moment.

And being absolutely insufferable about it.

She doesn't have to be open. If she didn't keep going on about it weight and diet, nobody would have thought anything, But she could at least stop telling everyone else to stop snacking while she snacks herself.

Then the issue is not the WLI which you seem to think is some kind of cheat (which is ignorant and untrue) but that she is commenting on what you eat. Just ask her to stop. I think you would be annoyed by her whatever she does. But focus on what is impacting you - her comments - and mind your own business about the rest.

She doesn't have diabetes. She is very open about her health issues.

I would tred very carefully here. 1. It's medical information and is protected under GDPR and is "protected data", colleague or not & insufferable or not it still does not give you the right to it.2. Why do you feel the need to 'look ' in someone's bag ...open or not could leave u open to all sorts of accusations in future e.g. if something goes missing you'll be first to blame ...3. It's none of your business , mind your own , she doesn't owe you a thing 4. If the behaviour bothers you communicate , change the subject, suddenly become "too busy to chat" or just be honest and say "can we please change the subject?"

CallMeEvelyn · 11/08/2025 20:53

This doesn't add up. Diabetes injections have to be kept in cool temperature, weight loss pens I assume too. She wouldn't have kept one in her handbag.

Secondly, why would you assume she has no self control and doesn't diet? That's exactly what she's doing by the sounds of it, medication suppresses the food noise most likely which many non-obese or overweight people don't understand because they don't experience it, and she eats a controlled diet. It's a level playing field and you seem very judgemental and ignorant.

Crunchymum · 11/08/2025 17:36

Sure thing.

People bring their (expensive and more often than not refrigerated) weightloss pens to work and also happen to leave it in plain sight of the OP.

Absolutely did not happen.

Exactly isn’t it a weekly thing? You’d not carry it round for a once a week jab.

CallMeEvelyn · 11/08/2025 20:55

And definitely don't bring this up, would you be discussing somebody taking anti-diarrhoea or indigestion tablets? No. Then don't discuss any other meds, it's not hard.

Miniatureschnauzers · 11/08/2025 20:56

@betnet Have you said anything directly to her?
I often find I feel much less pissed off with people when I address things directly, though I know it’s sometimes hard to do! When I’m pissed off but don’t address it, I can become quite fixated on things and rageful about them!!
I don’t know, maybe if she says, “oooh having another snack are you…?” I might say, “yes, and I would prefer if you didn’t comment every time I do as it takes the fun out of it!” Or something like that - clear, but not rude.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 11/08/2025 20:58

betnet · 11/08/2025 20:35

How do you know that is how we are all making her feel? Are you one of my colleagues?

Is it wrong to notice when someone loses or gains weight?

You said that "We have all" noticed her weight change.

In order for everyone to know that everyone has noticed it, it must have been mentioned amongst all of you.

People under observation from the rest of the group usually pick up on the fact its happening...

Cranberryavocado · 11/08/2025 21:01

Why does it bother you? Just be happy for her. I have friends on monjourno and it is not a magic pill, you have to still put some effort in to eat halthily and she might have also put in loads of other effort and the injection is one tool in her health journey.
I list three stone on the cambridge diet in three months, but I also excercised, changed my diet, did loads of yoga and basically changed my entire lifestyle and mindset and cambridge was just one part of the journey.

MyRootinTootinBaby · 11/08/2025 21:02

I’m on the jabs and the office keep asking me what my secret is and asking how I’m doing it. I’d rather not lie really, but I don’t want to be telling everyone or getting their opinions or further questions on it, so I just say calorie counting. If people didn’t ask, I wouldn’t have to lie, but I don’t think I owe it to people at work to tell them what I’m doing.

Her bag was wide open on her desk. I didn't grab her bag off her and look inside 🙄do you walk round guarding your eyes all the time?

I haven't told anyone and neither am I intending to. I was annoyed because she is telling everyone off for having snacks and saying she has such great willpower. She has snacks herself though.

If Sally has lost weight she has reduced her calorie intake. If she has been exercising as well, good for her. If she is taking WLI still good for her. She has still lost weight by eating less.

It might be annoying, but right now it is probably a big part of her life. If she has struggled to lose weight in the past and has finally found something that works, whether or not that’s WLI, she is very possibly obsessed with her new way of life. Be the better person and show some interest and some kindness.

We have been showing her kindness for years. Unfortunately it is not returned as we get told off for having snacks while she has them herself.
