To wonder how the UK will look in 3 years time?

I was inspired to write this after reading the UC post that was just reported - the govt’s welfare bill has passed but was watered down so unlikely to make any real savings.

I earn 40k, have a school age child and just feel like I am living hand to mouth 😩 I 100% think there should be a welfare systems that supports people on low incomes but I wonder how the current system will be sustained in the long run?

Just wondered what other people thought.

I actually wouldn’t mind paying more in taxes if we could be guaranteed more in services etc - for example my council tax just went up and the services seem even worse this year than usual.

They don’t help anyone. They’re highly expressive though.

If you say so.

Some posters deploy them in an attempt to shut down debate, or to have the last word.

Here’s another way the UK may look different.

The US has warned that censorship of free speech is getting worse in the UK.
On Tuesday, the US state department released its annual Human Rights Report, claiming there are “credible reports of serious restrictions on freedom of expression” in Britain.

The “human rights situation worsened” in Britain in 2024, the report said, frequently referring to the period after Sir Keir Starmer won the election last July.

Bloody hell!

You ve not lived much of a life if you are naïve enough to believe the rubbish that comes out of the WH these days....

That report has been widely rubbished... We all saw what Trump did when unemployment figures came out that he didn't agree with?

The rioters tried to murder people in hotels, taxi drivers attacked, on line influencers encouraging more violence...

Too right the UK cracked down, do you want anarchy?

No bar too low is there.

Vote for whomever you like. If you’re committed to Labour then go for it.

If posters are that loyal there’s no point in ‘updating’ them.

So, there isn’t one ….

I have lived a life, by most metrics.

During my career, in Europe, Asia and the US, I have met some truly exceptional people, but the vast majority are what you might term ‘mediocre’, of various grades of mediocrity. Without the rain makers, many of these individuals would not have had the opportunity they did.

Remove the incentives for the exceptional, and you will experience unintended consequences.

so true!

and that's the point I'm desperately trying to make - we need to pivot culture to celebrate success, to ensure those exceptional people believe that UK is a good place for them where they can set up and grow their businesses and enjoy the outcomes. This minority will pull everyone up even when they reach the sky for themselves.

I dread to think.
I'd rather bury my head in the sand like an ostrich.

Annoying I know but I just can't help it.....

it has some appeal.

I deployed the one in question because I was laughing at what a poster had written. Sorry. Should I feel the same urge again, I shall type out “laugh, laugh, laugh”. Better?

It’s really not this. Ik it’s your view but most can see it’s not.

It can be more than one thing?

The City of London Corporation has published our annual analysis of financial and professional services (FPS) foreign direct investment (FDI) into the UK. Despite global economic challenges, the UK's FPS sector has demonstrated strong resilience.
In 2024:

  • The UK was Europe’s top destination for FPS FDI by projects and investment value. It ranked third globally.
  • The value of capital invested in FPS projects reached £1.6bn. This is a 45% year-on-year increase.
  • Tech investment has now become the largest subsector for financial services (FS) FDI, overtaking investment management. This shift underscores the dynamic nature of the UK's financial services landscape.
  • Published May 2025.

So not all bad is it?

StarDolphins · 13/08/2025 14:05

🤣Where did I say I expected it to all be fixed in 1 year? I expect things not to have got worse. You know, like they have.

Change is expensive and disruptive, and the disruption causes yet more expense! So things often get worse before they get better.

I don't know if Labour will succeed in turning this country around, but at least they're aiming in the right direction. This is more than could be said for the Tories, who proved to be adept at enriching themselves and their donors at public expense, but the decline in public services over those 14 years is obvious and speaks for itself.

Sadly, bitterness and envy are endemic in the UK.

MN is an example of it.

Shall we apply a bit of critical thinking here?

Who says that situation deteriorated? Far right servant of Musk and Zuckerberg?

Why does he say this? because Labour tried to contain hate speech during riots?

because our freedom of speech puts responsibility on SM to fact check and limit harmful content and US based SM don't want to do it? and they don't want to do it because it cost them and limits their ability to influence public opinion and elections?

Yep, not bad at all. 2024 had half a year prior to Labour coming into power.
Now AstraZeneca is moving to US. And many more consider the same

Ok so what do you think happens to an exceptional person who is born into the lowest stratas of society under very high inequality? With no access to quality education, or the kinds of capital or safety nets that make entrepreneurialism possible? Maybe not even enough food for them to concentrate at school?

It feels like you're just not engaging with the evidence on this topic. The countries with the highest levels of innovation per capita, as measured by things like patents etc, are invariably the egalitarian ones. Inequality doesn't foster talent, it squanders it.

AZ haven't said they will yet have they? but reasons so far given are:

AZ frustrations with the U.K.’s regulatory environment — particularly rules around new medicine approvals and drug pricing systems — are said to be driving the move"

We could relax rules on drug testing/ approvals and get the NHS to pay more i suppose..... maybe not!

London has been losing its edge for many years now.. so ARM among many others, moved to NY in 2023 ..... Brexit challenges, access to capital and valuations...
WISE share price traded below its initial valuation for several years under the Cons... hence its move to NY.

Did you blame the Tories for this? nope, all World Events ain't it.

My job probably distorts my view, but there are so many physically and mentally unwell youngish people these days. These young people are just not capable of working or studying which makes me upset and worried for their future. Then we have a large immigrant population doing the jobs which no one else wants to do. It’s creating a sort of odd, two tier system in my very non diverse neck of the woods where white elderly people and young people with autism or MH are being cared for exclusively by black staff. It’s really odd, not the sort of multicultural dream that I envisaged. I don’t want a country where most of the black people I see in the community are carers or support workers. I want a world with true equality and opportunity for all. But what would it take to get the young white British people to work in care homes, and is it possible for African care assistants to progress to different careers where they aren’t subject to relentless racism, shift work, zero hour contracts and manual handling?

That was great effort to be heartfelt but very unconvincing. I just had a Black GP recently. And a doctor and the nurses are endless in numbers.
