Would you visit NI? Why/why not? I always find it interesting how marmite of a place my home is - keen to hear some opinions and maybe dispel a rumour or two :)

Yes I would visit NI. Would I visit London? No.

MillicentMaybe · 10/08/2025 20:23

Yes, have done twice, and would again. I’m half Irish through my father.

Yes I would visit NI. Would I visit London? No.

I adore London! DD is heading to uni there in Sept.

I've been to Northern Ireland a few times - lovely people and stunning coastline.

GenieGenealogy · 10/08/2025 20:25

Yes and have done loads of times. Belfast reminded me a lot of Glasgow, similar architecture. Loved the Titanic museum. When the kids were younger we regularly spent a week up on the Antrim coast around Bushmills and Portrush - beaches are glorious and we had the best time.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/08/2025 20:26

I have visited. Quite a few times. And would do again. I’m English.

Is there a reason why you think it could be marmite?

SundayFundayz · 10/08/2025 20:27

I discovered NI when a friend moved there… what an amazing place. Love Belfast, but prefer the coastline.

Bambamhoohoo · 10/08/2025 20:27

Yes I really want to go- I have this idea that I should live there!

I’ve never been because my parents are from south west Ireland so any trip over has had to be to there really. I hope to do it soon though, I should just arrange a little weekend

DollydaydreamTheThird · 10/08/2025 20:28

I have fond memories of visiting as a child. Loved the giants causeway and the coastline is beautiful. I remember it being very green. I remember visiting a whiskey distillery as well which my parents very much enjoyed. Lovely place and the people were very friendly. My mum and Dad's friends moved over and their house was right next to a farm near ballycastle/ballymena. Loved it. Would like to take my own kids at some point.

Clockchair · 10/08/2025 20:28

Been a few times, didn't occur to me that I wouldn't go. Never heard anybody refer to it as marmite.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/08/2025 20:28

Yes, my dad is from Belfast so I have family there.

HolidayInCambodia25 · 10/08/2025 20:29

Yes. And would choose it over quite a number of other potential UK destinations

DialSquare · 10/08/2025 20:29

Yes, I’ve been a few times. I immediately felt at home in Belfast for some reason. Love it there.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/08/2025 20:30

Yes,,because I know people who’ve been (including a dd) and have said how beautiful it is.

LastKnownSurvivor · 10/08/2025 20:30

Yes, I would like to see the docks and do the guided tour of the murals (sorry for obviousness of those choices, I'm sure NI has lots of hidden gems).

nettle86 · 10/08/2025 20:30

I visited NI nearly 20 years ago and am still here! Although at the time a few of my parents friends did comment on if it was safe. I feel safer here than anywhere else.

Berlinlover · 10/08/2025 20:31

I’ve been to Belfast three times and love it there. It’s irritating having to use Sterling (I’m from the west of Ireland) but it’s a great place.

Elbowpatch · 10/08/2025 20:31

Yes, I would and have visited. I worked there for a few years in the early 1990s.

Youdontseehow · 10/08/2025 20:31

NI is fab!!! Beautiful scenery, great architecture, really easy to get to. I much much much prefer Belfast to Dublin. The Grand Opera house is absolutely stunning as is the City Hall - which you can do a tour of. Wasn’t too fussed about The Titanic exhibition if I’m honest but it was ok.

MeganM3 · 10/08/2025 20:33

Yes I’d love to.

Teacaketravesty · 10/08/2025 20:33

Oh yes. For the accents alone! But it’s on my list for much more of course. Closest I’ve been is Donegal and I loved it.

Lozza70 · 10/08/2025 20:35

NI is much much more than Belfast and the north coast/Giants Causeway!

Passwordsaremynemesis · 10/08/2025 20:35

I am there now visiting from Oz. I am visiting family though.

Awrite · 10/08/2025 20:36

Of course, it's beautiful. I visited loads during my uni years (friends and boyfriend). Then, I took my kids when they were wee a couple of times. Great place to holiday.

evtheria · 10/08/2025 20:37

Yes! But I have distant relatives there, and have been many times before since young. I think even if I didn’t know anyone there I’d like to go, do some walks or a cottage stay… Most of the people I know who’ve gone as tourists only go to Belfast for just a couple days, seeing the Titanic museum and pubs, which is a shame considering the lovely, blustery coast. I do struggle to think of ‘visitor attractions’ - I think they could do a music museum, a bit like the one in Seattle, covering things from traditional folk music to the more modern, famous Irish, and having special spaces to hold small gigs or larger shows. I guess there’s that GoT thing which I wouldn’t be bothered with, though I do love a ruin or creepy forest.
