Would you visit NI? Why/why not? I always find it interesting how marmite of a place my home is - keen to hear some opinions and maybe dispel a rumour or two :)

Ive been twice in the last 4 months. Is there a reason it's Marmite? I travel there frequently for work....

Probably a throw back from the Troubles?

PhaseFour · 10/08/2025 21:16

I visited Belfast several years ago. Took my teenagers amd we had a fantastic time. We'd all love to go back. Infact, I hanker after relocating there, but I have too many ties where I live, so it will never happen. Shame!

Nevereatcardboard · 10/08/2025 21:23

I’ve never been to NI but my DH has. He was made to feel very unwelcome in Belfast and he could only assume it’s because he doesn’t ‘look British’. Other English people visiting the same places as him were definitely being treated better. It’s the first and only time he’s been made to feel really uncomfortable in a sizeable UK city.

peepsypops · 10/08/2025 21:23

@Bambamhoohoowell, yes. Because the post suggested there would be a specific danger by them visiting and I wondered why they think that of NI specifically.

Why, do you want them go relive racist incidents for you? Talk about micro aggression.

Omg of course. Sorry, long week and my brains not functioning.

Either way, yes I'd go back for work but also just to visit.

Astrabees · 10/08/2025 20:49

No. I don't like the accent and I have little sympathy for the occupants who do not ant a united Ireland. I also feel it is too much effort to travel there when I could go to France or Italy instead.

Why would they if they feel themselves to be British?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 10/08/2025 21:36

Yes I would. We have family in Ireland and visit regularly, but I'd like to visit Northern Ireland, particularly Dublin and the Giants' Causeway.

jackstini · 10/08/2025 21:40

Yes - I did earlier this year
Did Mussenden Temple, Portrush for 1 night, Giant’s Causeway then drove down the east coast.

Stayed in Belfast for 3 nights. Did Titanic distillery and museum, Crumlin Road Gaol, Falls Road, bus tour etc

Fabulous holiday

Dublin is in the Republic of Ireland

Brainstorm23 · 10/08/2025 21:40

Yes I live in Belfast. English people definitely shouldn't visit. They also definitely shouldn't even think of moving here as house prices are high enough already 😀

aintnospringchicken · 10/08/2025 21:42

Yes,have been 3 times.
DH has cousins who live in Belfast.

I meant Belfast - I've had a drink!!

ACynicalDad · 10/08/2025 21:46

Have planned to for a while, not sure when it will actually happen but giants causeway and the titanic museum would be really interesting.

Fair enough so have I 🤣

SkylarFalls · 10/08/2025 21:47

Yes, been before would go again

I've never heard anyone whose been there for a holiday say they've hated it, I'm not recognising the marmite label

I know people who would never consider it, because their idea of holidays are med/Dubai/maybe Florida or Caribbean, and they don't deviate, but they wouldn't visit northern or Eastern Europe or ROI either

Genevieva · 10/08/2025 21:48

Yes I would love to. I have a friend from NI who lived back a couple of years ago, so I hope to visit her and walk some of the coastal path.

Lemonyyy · 10/08/2025 21:49

Yes, absolutely would visit. We have family in the Republic so have always visited there but would like to venture up to NI and explore some of the coastline.

DemonsRocks · 10/08/2025 21:49

We were there last month, love Belfast! Love the whole coast it's stunning.

bittertwisted · 10/08/2025 21:50

Absolutely loved it
my husband is an Irish catholic
I was surprised how much the troubles were still alive
But I bloody loved Northern Ireland

Dymaxion · 10/08/2025 21:50

It's on my list of places to visit, apparently there are great places to eat in Belfast, then there is so much lovely coastline to explore.
@BlueFlamingoes what are your recommendations to people who have never visited before ?

whitewineandsun · 10/08/2025 21:50

I lived there. Loved it. Of course I would.

Panterusblackish · 10/08/2025 21:52

I've sadly only been once, sailing into Larne.

Gorgeous place, stunning coastline and i would like to go back.

Tis a lot of flags though.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 10/08/2025 21:52

I've worked with a guy from a dairy farming family from Omagh and someone from Fermanagh. We have family in County Cork. Interestingly (well I think it's interesting!) me and DP both have West Cork ancestry although I don't have family there now. The island of Ireland is beautiful.

Gloriia · 10/08/2025 21:53

It's alright. Prefer Belfast to Dublin but there's nothing there to make a flight or ferry crossing worthwhile really. Even the Giant's causeway is a bit meh imo.
