Would you visit NI? Why/why not? I always find it interesting how marmite of a place my home is - keen to hear some opinions and maybe dispel a rumour or two :)

Only been once but loved it. I’d like to visit again soon.

Pebbles16 · 10/08/2025 20:38

It's on my list of places I really want to visit. Just haven't managed it thus far.
I am curious as to why you think it would be Marmite.

Fragmentedbrain · 10/08/2025 20:39

I have family there and I have worked there... It's worse in social disorder terms than GB realises in many ways... But I love it

wolleywool · 10/08/2025 20:39

Family are all from the Republic and growing up it was definitely not a place to consider "visiting". One of my cousins went to Belfast uni which upset my aunt.

I went a few years ago and really enjoyed, weather was shite though!

Oscarsmom71 · 10/08/2025 20:40

Visited Belfast last year. Loved it.
Great city.

Dangermoo · 10/08/2025 20:41

No, it doesn't appeal to me.

Dangermoo · 10/08/2025 20:42

..but I'd like to do Dublin.

wizzywig · 10/08/2025 20:43

As an Asian no. I've heard there's a lot of racism in NI and Rep of Ireland

indoorplantqueen · 10/08/2025 20:44

I don’t think of it as being marmite. 99% of the people I know who have visited have loved it. I’ve not met anyone who has hated it. Belfast, the culture, the coastline, food, music scene and the people. It’s a great place.

CustardySergeant · 10/08/2025 20:45

I've visited Northern Ireland on a cruise a few years ago, so was only there one day, but the countryside I saw between Belfast and the Giant's Causeway was absolutely stunning. I would be very happy to go back there and see more of Northern Ireland, as I would most of the places we visited on the cruise, but unfortunately age and health issues have put an end to holidays for me.

CoconutGrove · 10/08/2025 20:45

My dds visited when they were 16 and 19. They stayed in Belfast in a premier inn and did a red bus tour. They got off at various stops such as the university and the botanic garden. They also visited Giants Causeway/Dark Hedges/ some castles on a coach trip. They enjoyed it

I am there now visiting from Oz. I am visiting family though.

Very jealous! DD spent her gap year travelling around Australia and we were lucky enough to go out and visit her a few months ago. Such an amazing country - will definitely be back

As a black person, I wouldn’t visit but would go if work related

My Mil is from Fermanagh. Have been multiple times. Dc1 is Titanic obsessed so we have to go via Belfast and visit both the Titanic Museum and the Big Fish (it's tradition apparently now). The only trip I've found difficult was when we were invited to a memorial for dh's grandfather who was killed in the Troubles which was tricky with young children for obvious reasons.

Shopgirl1 · 10/08/2025 20:49

Yes, I’ve been there a few times, spent a few weekends in Belfast, don’t love the city if I’m honest, but really liked the titanic tour and shopping. Loved the Antrim coast and giants causeway. Also Portadown. I was also in Derry many years ago but my memory of that is quite hazy.

Unpopular opinion but I didn't really like Australia and my family live there too. I thought it was just like anywhere. I'd been travelling in Asia before I went so maybe doing Australia after such a culturally rich experience was a bit of an anti climax. I'll probably get flamed for this but at least it is anonymous. 🤣

RIPMTV · 10/08/2025 20:49

Yes. I’ve been to Belfast several times (been visiting since childhood as my parents have a few friends there) and Derry once. Found both places really interesting and I’d particularly like to go back to Belfast as I haven’t been since 2010.

I’d also like to do some more touristy stuff in the north, like the Giants Causeway.

Astrabees · 10/08/2025 20:49

No. I don't like the accent and I have little sympathy for the occupants who do not ant a united Ireland. I also feel it is too much effort to travel there when I could go to France or Italy instead.

Letsgodancing · 10/08/2025 20:49

I have always heard NI, you are never more than an hour from a city, countryside, beach or mountains (I cannot say how true that is ) I went to visit a relative at uni there around 2010, I was only young at the time but it appeared that they had put so much money into improving the city of Belfast and there were some great places in belfast.

stillhiding1990 · 10/08/2025 20:49

I’ve been twice, it’s lovely

Portrush I meant. Not Portadown. Maybe I was there too though

Same.

isn’t it more people who haven’t gone can’t see past the news descriptions. The troubles, military, politics.

much like Beirut. It’s still used to describe a war zone, but outside of those issues it’s a very beautiful place.

DramaAlpaca · 10/08/2025 20:54

Yes, I've been a good few times and I love it there.

I'm English, DH is Irish and we live in Ireland so these days it's an easy place for us to visit.

The first time I went it was 1991 and I was still living in England. I remember my DM was very worried about 'something happening to us' but of course nothing did. DH and I spent a week travelling around exploring NI, staying in B&Bs and we had a great time.
