To think modern parenting is more about parents’ image than children’s wellbeing?

So much of parenting now looks like a performance for social media or other parents’ approval. AIBU to think children’s needs often come second to how the parent looks doing it?

Yawn. Another one of these formulaic ‘discussion point’ threads, probably AI generated.

Yes especially the loud parents who want everyone around them to hear. Bet they ignore their kids as soon as they go through the front door

I really find the whole social media performance claim such a bore. I know very few parents who actively, regularly post their kids on SM - what I, and a lot of my circle of parents do, is get ideas from social media. Cool party ideas, day out ideas, parenting ‘hacks’ - they help with life, not make us ourselves ‘perform’. Of course some do, and there are influencers, but - IME at any rate - it’s not the majority at all.

Some parents are like that. Most are not imo. It's not as if showing off through your children is a new thing. It existed way before social media. Even though lots of people now share their dc's milestones and achievements on social media, that obviously really doesn't mean that's the sole purpose of those achievements.

KrisAkabusi · 10/08/2025 20:20

No, because only a small minority of parents put everything they do on social media. The rest of us just get on with it.

Octavia64 · 10/08/2025 20:21

What, as opposed to old style parenting if giving them a clout round the ear or the belt?

MidnightPatrol · 10/08/2025 20:28

So many of these ‘aren’t parents today awful’ threads.

Let me guess, you were so much better and your children have turned out soooo well.

Whilst in reality, their adult kids are probably in therapy unpicking the way they were parented (like me)

Is this is a joke? Did you really think about it before you posted?

you really think the parents you know, the parents who live on your street, the parents you work with, the parents who are you friends, are… rather that bringing up their children…… focusing all their attention on social Media?!

I mean you’re clearly using hyperbole but where did you even get this idea from? “Modern parenting”?!? “About social media?”?!?
