To be so sick of being broke?

PrincessC0nsuelaBananaHammock · 09/08/2025 20:12

This is pretty much just a moan really. I'm already doing everything I can to try and improve our situation financially. Although nothing's working atm. 😑

Both DH and I work full-time, on minimum wage. Me 45 hours per week, him between 40-50 depending on the week. And we still can't make ends meet. I'm talking having about £50 left in the bank 2 days after payday because all the bills have come out.

Not entitled to any benefits as earn too much for UC (on MW? 😐). Kids are grown up (22 and 18) but still living at home. DD1 is in college and on UC and waiting to see if she's entitled to PIP for her autism. DD2 is starting uni next month and works part-time herself.

I'm just so fucking sick of the cost of everything. To the point I'm questioning whether I can afford to buy a £6 pack of Benadryl for my fucking hayfever! 😡

Applying for multiple better-paying jobs every week and getting bloody nowhere! Urgh.

OP it’s really shit. The only way to have a good quality of life now really is to earn quite a bit as things are very expensive.

However if you do want to change things you could cut your grocery costs down, you could stop paying the gym membership and mounjaro etc. Your internet bill seems very steep to me. However, whether you do that is up to you of course.

I have just had a look to see if its worth changing. Its not

Is that Shemed deal for the higher dose?

Singlehouseholdjoy · 10/08/2025 20:17

Ignore the twats OP
I grew up very poor on benefits and I think people expect you to sit in your coat and stare at the wall.
Well done on the mounjaro too.
I know you don't want solutions, just a moan, so solidarity! It's hard when everything keeps going up!

It's really tough, I hope DD1 gets the support she needs. A lot can be funded by the EHCP but they don't make it easy to access. I'm appealing again 😬 but we'll hopefully get there before he's 25.

My DS2 will hopefully be going to university in September, too. He's also autistic and has had some significant struggles with mental health, but his academic ability matching the education system for exams etc, means the path ahead is easier for him compared to DS1. I'm so glad for the EHCP and hopefully he'll finish with some useful qualifications, as well as therapeutic support.

I'm forever filling out the WLI things but not committed yet. I wouldn't stop them in your situation. I also think being obese (like I currently am) is a bit of a barrier with getting jobs. Not that I can even get an interview to horrify a prospective employer atm 😅

Good luck to your DS2 in going to uni! That's such a massive achievement! You must be so proud of him. 😍

My dd2 has Dyslexia and when starting secondary school she was so down on herself and her academic skills, her confidence was so low. Primary did not help her at all! She's come so far, fantastic GCSEs (A in English Lit and Lang), she's done her English A Level, and (results pending on Thursday of course) is starting English Lit at uni in September. 😊

@HoskinsChoice

Benadryl is just the brand name for Diphenhydramine. There are plenty of generics. It’s literally the same thing, any idea of “this is the only one which works for me” is just placebo because you know it’s brand name so think it’s better.

I think Benadryl is actually Acrivastine? We get it prescribed, it used to be Benadryl but now it's non branded Acrivastine.

Okthenguys · 10/08/2025 19:53

On the mounjaro line item - OP I earn significantly more than you and have very little debt apart from a mortgage. When we’ve had unexpected bills or outgoings my mounjaro is the first thing to go.

How much do you earn? And how many kids are you supporting?

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 10/08/2025 20:20

Well done on the weight loss. It's obviously the debt killing you, so how long do you have to go until you complete any of the repayments?

JLou08 · 10/08/2025 20:20

Spending £6 on hay-fever treatment when you can get it for under a pound probably plays quite a part in your struggles.

They’re breaking the law. Observational healthcare research - which they say their “study” is - in the UK requires consent and REC approval, none of which is evident from their website.

I have a professional interest in good research, so will follow this up.

I would normally agree with you but benadryl allergy relief is acrivastine and there is no generic available. It was the only thing that worked for my hay fever too, until fexofenadine (eg allevia,TreatHay) came along.

Singlehouseholdjoy · 10/08/2025 20:21

There's a massive connection between poverty, depression, comfort eating , more depression, low self esteem, motivation drop, more poverty..
Weight loss injections help you break that

Yes you're completely right. Obviously that's where I'm going wrong! I mean having suffered from hay fever for my entire life it's not like I've actually tried every hay fever drug under the sun before finding what works for me, is it? Hmm

Yes, but you have to sign up for 12 months didnt see anywhere you could cancel

Exactly! I actually take both fexofenadine and Benadryl that's the only combination that lets me function normally during the spring and summer.

That's brilliant how well your DD2 has progressed. DS2 didn't really do well until A Levels, I'm just hoping he gets the grades he needs to get into his preferred university. I'm both desperate for and dreading Thursday

HardyHiker · 10/08/2025 20:26

Blushingm · 10/08/2025 08:13

Acristavine is available from other companies - Benadryl is the brand name. You can purchase it cheaper than buying the brand Benadryl

I've found that the generic (Almus) is hard to find. It's only available online and has similar costs tp benadryl.

Oh I'm the same! I'll just be glad when the week is over and we know for sure. 😂🤞🏻for them both!

You can get both of these on prescription via your GP. If you are eligible for free prescriptions, this would be cheaper, or if you are on other prescriptions, a prepayment certificate may work out cheaper.

Singlehouseholdjoy · 10/08/2025 20:31

When I was growing up, on very tight benefits money, my mum would buy herself one chocolate from Thorntons every week , they used to do these little single boxes. Total extravagance, 79p in 1988 ish BUT it gave her a taste of being a normal person, someone who would one day, be able to have a little bit more. These things are important

Thanks. I pay for my prescriptions. I've tried getting hay fever meds from my GP before, several times. He told me to buy some Piriton, (which don't work for me anyway). My GP surgery is really crap.

To be honest to me, its £50 per person on food every week , almost £10 a day
Thats a lot to me .
Considering i only shop once a month online as no supermarkets near me except a tiny Tesco express which is more expensive and i only use to buy milk .
I only spend £80 a month as i need to keep to a budget and i am not eating much anyway on Mounjaro .
Thats £20 a week
Each person in your house is eating over double that .
Not sure how on Mounjaro !
My freezer is full but stuff i dont fancy anymore 😭
I have actually lost most of my taste , only fairly early into it, so hopefully it will come back.
All i have had today is some, fresh orange and two tuna sandwiches.
I also have no idea what a VPN. is either but if its to do with work, thats on them to pay.
My mobile is sim only £5 a month.
No need for expensive contracts and the latest £1000 phones .
Mine is a paid for iphone but 5 years old now .
Things could be cut and kids should have to pay for their keep.
What are they spending £70+ a week on and not contributing anything ?
Just my opinion

NeuroSpicyCat · 10/08/2025 16:43

I thought UC looks at household income, so if you are unentitled to it - your kids would also be unentitled?

I don't really know anything about UC but I'm surprised to hear a student at college can get it. When I was a student we all had pt jobs.

It’s debt repayment that is killing their finances.

This.

And debt repayment won't last for ever OP, even if it seems like it now. The key to paying off debt is to prioritise the debt with the highest interest rate, as that will cost the most. When you've cleared that one, use the money you save in repayments on that one to overpay and clear the one with the next highest interest rate, and so on. It's sort of like a snowball effect, but in reverse.

I've been in a place where so much of my money was going on debt, there was precious little for anything else. The relief of getting debt-free was immense, and I've never been in debt since.

And I'm afraid I agree about the Netflix, the VPN etc (I also work from home, with bog standard internet, and it's fine). If you did without those for just a year and used the saving to pay down the debt, you'd be debt-free so much sooner, and your disposable income would be much greater.
