To let DD wear ‘goth’ things to school?

DD (8) has recently gotten into gothic stuff such as black accessories / clothes and particularly skulls. I’ve seen some cartoon skull clips that she’d love for school but DH thinks she’s too young for that kind of thing. WIBU to let her or is it not appropriate for school? She’s going into year 4.

It seems fine to me! It doesn't actually mean anything, it's just a vibe she is in to.

My family had, what was looking back, a weird rule that you weren't allowed to wear black clothing until you were thirteen. What was even weirder was that I followed it with my kids!

@mbosnzthanks! Haha that’s funny that you carried it on 😂

I had some little bone clips for my hair in primary school. In fact I've still got them and I'm nearly 40 (still wearing them too) 🫣🤣

Let her! I love mini goths.
My 12 year old flirts with skulls etc, I don’t mind as I was a full blown goth back in the day.
I’m also a teacher and it’s nice to see a bit of personality.

Depends on the school uniform policy I would guess. I wouldn't have sent my kid in with skull hair clips, but then hair clips and ribbons matched the uniform colour. I would probably have been fine with a key ring attached to a school bag as a lot of kids had various things hanging off their bags.

Jaws2025 · 09/08/2025 12:10

Why can't she just wear them out of school?

FenderStrat · 09/08/2025 12:11

Some schools have strict uniform policies, including hair accessories.

If what she has, is on the right side of the uniform policy, let her wear them.

Mini goths are just the cutest. I hope she enjoys this phase (or lifelong subculture, which ever it ends up being).

Hair clips sound fine but watch out for leather chokers and things that suggest adult sexuality.

whiterabbity · 09/08/2025 12:17

It doesn’t go against the policy as far as I’m aware, she’s worn all different colours and shapes.
