I cooked dinner this evening. One of the ingredients was chicken. I diced it on a separate chopping board with a separate knife. Veg and other dry ingredients that needed chopping were done on a different board with a different knife. In my view this is normal and basic food hygiene.

Sat down to eat in the dining room. I hadn't cleared everything up from the kitchen counter yet. DH wanted some crusty bread to go with his meal so he went into the kitchen to cut some and brought me a slice too.

After we'd finished eating I went back into the kitchen and saw he'd used the dirty chicken board and knife to slice the bread. I was angry with him for using an obviously dirty board and knife. He was angry with me for being angry with him.

AIBU or is DH?

Leaving a dirty board lying around with raw meat left on it is unreasonable on your part.. However I also wonder how he failed to notice the dirty board and prevailed to use it.

Also, some types of FP take longer than 14 hours to start feeling the effects from, though I do hope you don't take ill.

One of those threads where I’m so glad I don’t eat meat!
I’m a tidy as you go cook as much as possible with a chronic illness that limits my capacity for chores.
DW has ADHD and will be focused on getting the meal on the table. Luckily she’s an excellent cook so I tend to just chuckle at any packets left around.

We have a dog that eats dog food with meat and fish so there’s a specific bowl, knife and spoon that we use when preparing his meals. Packet has boiling water poured over it, ready for recycling.
Knife and spoon and bowl in sink with hot water.

OP, your husband is a plonker and should have apologised not got cross with you.
It’s not cutting the loaf with a bread knife that raised my eyebrows.
My mother was in service and the use of the correct cutlery and utensils was the law in our house!

Well I've survived until now with no food poisoning. But I read campylobacter symptoms can take up to 5 days to appear, which is worrying.

Just for clarification:
the board was left out for no more than 30 mins,
there was a separate board and knife used to cut veg also out,
there were other clean boards in the cupboard,
the dirty knife DH used was a small utility knife,
there was a clean bread knife that he left in the knife block,
the chopping boards are different colours,
DH is 45 year old NT university graduate with a full time job

As I said earlier, I had this exact scenario and pretty much all of the above applied to my situation as well. It's beyond belief. Also, I didn't get ill either, thankfully

Maybe take it as a warning to wash up things used to touch raw meat immediately after use.

I don’t understand why people don’t clean up as they go. Put it in the dishwasher/wash it. Put the rubbish in the bin.
