Why do many people not buy cereals when box is undone - contents still sealed

I don’t get this at all. I have said to customers that the bag inside is still sealed. Had three cases of our own brand bran flakes, all boxes are not sealed. A small piece of cellotape fixed this and customers were buying them.

All it is the machine in the factory that seals the boxes wasn’t working properly

........okay, I'll ask...

What do you mean by 'our own brand bran flakes'?

Are you Mrs Sainsbury?

KrisAkabusi · 08/08/2025 15:35

Because there's no guarantee that the bag actually is sealed? If there's a small hole they will go stale more quickly, or already be stale, so I'll buy a box that I know is completely intact rather than take the risk.
It's not really that hard to understand.

LoveWine123 · 08/08/2025 15:36

Why should we be buying something in a ripped box?

Fix your machine or give a discount.

MsPug · 08/08/2025 15:36

Mr sainsbury 🤣🤣🤣

Snorlaxo · 08/08/2025 15:37

Most people don’t take the inner bag out to check it’s fully sealed. If you’re going to spend your money on bean flakes, why wouldn’t you pick the box that is in tact?

Does the “open” boxes end up in the colleague shop or the reduced shelf?

Skybluepinky · 08/08/2025 15:38

It’s damaged so unless it was half price why would people buy it.

Theraffarian · 08/08/2025 15:49

I’m not going to take the plastic bag out of the box and give it a jiggle around to see if that’s damaged too , so I will pick a perfect box .

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/08/2025 15:55

Perhaps people are concerned that the plastic dinosaur may been stolen?

Actually, I wouldn't buy a box that was sealed with sellotape either. In fact that's worse as the inner bag may have been opened too.

ObtuseMoose · 08/08/2025 15:57

Surely it's the thought that someone might have tampered with them?

isthismylifenow · 08/08/2025 16:20

It's damaged. Packaging damage. Just because the contents are fine, it's still a damaged item.

If there are two on the shelf, one damaged and one not, it's human nature to take the best one for the same price.

However, if it's marked down well due to the box damage, I will take that one first.

Meadowfinch · 08/08/2025 16:22

I don't buy breakfast cereals at all. Nutritionally of almost no value, and stupidly expensive.

Buy a decent loaf of bread instead.

marshmallowfinder · 08/08/2025 16:26

It's damaged. We sell them only to staff at a reduced price in our store.

DeLaRuiz · 08/08/2025 16:31

Huh?! Why buy something potentially substandard? If you have the choice, you’ll buy the intact version, obviously.

2dogsandabudgie · 08/08/2025 16:42

I don't like buying any products even non food items if the box is damaged. Not even something like a kettle even though it will be out the box as soon as I get home.

Littlemisscapable · 08/08/2025 16:45

We pay enough for everything these days why choose a potentially faulty product?

Helpmeplease2025 · 08/08/2025 16:49

God no, always get a fresh one from the back. Who knows what else happened to the box; I worked in Tesco as a student. I saw how some things ended up flung round the warehouse and rolled over etc

MightyCrabjoys · 08/08/2025 17:03

I can’t be bothered checking the contents are intact. It’s quicker to select a sealed box.
I wouldn’t buy one that was sellotaped if I noticed that either.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 08/08/2025 18:18

It's the same with dinted tins @Beon nobody except me seems to want them - it's a tin FFS, the contents will be fine!

PeloMom · 08/08/2025 18:21

Why would I buy something damaged if I can buy the same thing not damaged for the same amount of money? I may consider if it’s deeply discounted but otherwise why would I?

WeaselsRising · 08/08/2025 18:39

I remember when food in supermarkets was being tampered with and they had to bring in all the seals that are used now.

I do not buy damaged or open boxes unless they are heavily discounted.
