To feel very uneasy at the latest 'conspiracy?' theory doing the rounds on social media?

I keep seeing different versions of the same thing, people saying that there are 'isis sleeper cells' hiding among migrants and there are plans to target children/schools in a terror attack.

I rolled my eyes to begin with thinking it's all scare mongering or it could be some idiots trying to drum up support for 'Reform'

However, there's a sizable amount of people vowing to keep their children off school and not send them back in September on account of these rumours. That's what got my attention.

Am I being unreasonable/ridiculous to feel unnerved by all of this talk? Do you think there's any truth in it?

I've name changed incase I'm being ridiculous 😩

Please be kind, I have PND so I'm easy to scare I guess and would like some perspective from the level headed folks on mumsnet.

Have you got any links to verify any of that?

These have completely passed me by, but seriously....yes there is a certain level of risk posed by terrorists or crazies, but statistically it's absolutely miniscule. You can't let it impact your life, any more than you can avoid travelling by car because of the miniscule risk of a fatal accident. But I'm Irish & have friends who grew up in NI right through the Troubles & just got on with it, so I'm probably a bit eyerolly about contemporary UK terror panic.

Also agreeing that social media is a terrible place to be if you struggle with depression or anxiety. And once you start clicking on these stories the algorithms will just feed you more and more.

I’ve looked that up also and I can only find one story that can in any way closely match this version of events, and it’s one Syrian asylum seeker that stabbed multiple people in Austria, along with a few stories here and there about isolated incidents. Most stories talk about asylum seekers being the victims rather than perpetrators.

Stabbings and teenage gangs have increased in general though. Nothing to suggest it’s migrants

I’m a teacher. I’ve loads of teacher friends in loads of different schools. This is a load of rubbish. Not one person has mentioned it.

Ok, good.

It reminds me of the story that went round about 10/15 years ago. My friends mum/ neighbour saw that a woman in a head scarf/ man with an accent had dropped some money. They ran after them to give it back. The man/women said in a heavy accent “as a reward don’t go “name local big shopping centre/football ground” next week”. It was everywhere and so many people believed it

Yes that one was doing the rounds after the 9/11 attacks.

And if you believe THAT you'd believe anything as well.

That’s exactly the point, I don’t believe anything, I require credible evidence, unlike some, which has yet to be provided.

If you believe actual published facts?

Thepeopleversuswork · 12/08/2025 22:05

I think I'll keep my child off nursery in September, this is too scary and those on this thread saying otherwise don't obviously understand the threat we've imported into this country because they're far left virtue signallers. I pray all the children can be safe the threat is horrific 😥

If there is a threat we've imported into this country its the fear of immigrants being weaponised to cause poorly informed people to believe stuff like this.

Keeping your child off school would be to your child's detriment. Please don't do this.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 08/08/2025 15:38

The people who keep their kids out of school are exactly the people who will cause terrorist attacks, by raising children to drop out of society and live their lives online where they are ripe for grooming either by racist groups or terrorist groups.

I’m scared by it. I’m not an idiot nor raise my kids to be society drop-outs. People are allowed to be concerned about their children’s safety. It’s odd when you’re shouted down for doing that. There’s enough info to be concerned.

separately I think it’s sloppy to think if this is being organised it’s by asylum seekers. It could be, who knows, or by home growns - the fact is there is a growing religion here that has a very dangerous extremist faction. Equally, we have an extremist counter faction. The difference is that the latter is trying to protect us from the former.

Which professional is credible for you? The police have already told people not to spread rumours.

Are you going to also stop your children using roads, public transport or attending events? Because most attacks in the UK have been on the Tube, roads or crowds. But if you look at statistics, your children are far likelier to have a road accident.

Some people here need to learn about statistics.

Ok. Social media is definitely a credible source. I make all my decisions based on what ProudBoy234 tells me.

Advised by who?

Beryls · 14/08/2025 13:09

Sounds to me like one of those 'A friend told me that that a friend told him he was not to go to the Trafford Centre on insert random date because it's getting blown up' type things.

People are weird and make stuff up like this all the time. Remember chain letters? Someone weird obviously thought that was fun to start for no reason whatsoever.

I believe that someone has just made this up and it's got traction because people have (legitimate) concerns about who these men (and it is pretty much all men) who are chucking their documents into the sea actaully are because we dont know where they've come from or why.

I wouldnt however laugh at the existence of sleeper cells etc, or laugh at any such conspiracy theories even if I think they're totally made up. If 9/11 hadn't happened yet and someone told you they overheard a conversation about planes being flown into a building I doubt anyone would pay attention, and some would laugh and say how ridiculous.

You've got to balance it out though and live your life, kids can't just stop going to school because there's a very high chance that some pillock has made up a rumour and mange to get it spread far and wide.

Because it’s nobody who knows anything. It’s nonsense.

Which this 1 about isis attacking our children 🤔

Kumquatzest · 14/08/2025 17:21

Of course nothing is outside of the realm of possibility but Islamist terrorists in Europe don't typically attack schools. They're more likely to target crowded places like concert venues or tourist attractions or transportation hubs.
