To think you can’t take a man with painted nails seriously?

I know people say “it’s just nail polish” but I can’t help feeling like a man with painted nails instantly loses credibility. Whether it’s in a corporate setting or just in everyday life, it gives off a certain vibe that makes it hard to take him seriously.

It’s not about being closed-minded, it’s just that some things don’t translate well across genders. Am I being unreasonable or do others feel the same?

Well my dp is off to work today with bright pink nails😂. 7yr old done it last night and he forgot to remove it before bed. He's not particularly bothered tbh

If a man feels comfortable expressing himself by painting his nails then imo that speaks of having more credibility as a man secure with his masculinity.

Completely agree. I find that very attractive.

I went to a work event recently, corporate setting, and there were several men who were sporting nail varnish, with beards and feminine earrings. It seems to be an agreed upon style. All three were quite hostile people I found. It was almost like it was a test to see if you expressed a problem with it.

Can earrings be gendered?

I'm guessing you were giving off vibes to them that you were a bigot tbh

Avoidhumans · 08/08/2025 13:13

I never bothers me.

Inchworms · 08/08/2025 13:14

It always tickles me that whenever people get judgy about nails they always mention ‘French Manicure’ as the acceptable option

dunno why just does

Yes of course. Earrings can be feminine. It doesn't mean earrings are female sexed and only for women. Feminine men can wear them just as well.

I don't think I do give off 'bigoted vibes'. But I do think the intention was to off balance people given that most women and men in the field typically follow the corporate dress code e.g. No blue nails, clean shaven, jewellery is discreet.

Meanttobeworking · 08/08/2025 13:19

Do women with nail varnish lose credibility too?

Mmm you're giving off massive bigot vibes right now...

HowardTJMoon · 08/08/2025 13:23

Feminine men can wear earrings? How generous of you.

You might want to re-think your opinion of the bigot vibes you give off.

idrinkandiknowthings · 08/08/2025 13:25

I love a guy with painted nails. Even chipped polish. When I was a goth we all used to share make up in the loos at clubs.

CMOTDibbler · 08/08/2025 13:31

I love painted nails as part of a metal/rock/goth look on men. Also eyeliner and mascara. Nuno Bettencourt, Steve Tyler and Yungblud all wore in on stage at Back to the Beginning and all looked amazing

Meanttobeworking · 08/08/2025 13:19

Yes if it's electric blue.

It's not really about whether a man can wear varnish or feminine earrings though, it's about whether it's ok in that context.

Ohhilois · 08/08/2025 13:35

I think it’s fucking ridiculous. But I had to get to
my mid 40s before I could say that aloud.

Attention seeking bullshit.

YABU - it’s exactly this narrow-minded attitude that perpetuates stereotypes of what a man ‘should’ be and what a woman ‘should’ be and is driving the trans trenders (the increasing number of men hopping on the trans bandwagon and “becoming” a woman). Maybe some of these men just want to wear some nail varnish, make-up, maybe a dress some days. Can we please just shut up and let them without mocking them and driving them to transition

The Only thing that perpetuated gender stereotypes to me, was watching my own 4 children (2 boys, 2 girls) from birth, and other peoples young children in various education settings for two decades.

As much as parents wanted to push Princess dresses and nail varnish on little boys, I never saw one who didn’t gravitate towards things with wheels and things they could bash from when they were very small, despite being surrounded by every toy you could ever think of and able to chose anything they wanted.

Men can wear feminine style earrings yes. But my point really was that women can't wear them in this setting. So men doing so is an act of asserting dominance. Yet again!

You can read men's minds and know what their motivations are? That's amazing! What am I thinking right now?

Reeeeally might want to rethink that bigot thing

winzomm · 08/08/2025 14:00

I instantly judge them as attention seeking wannabe artistic androgynous types. If that makes me phobic about them, so be it. I can't change my feelings.

Let's put it like this, I wouldn't go on a date with a man who wears nail polish. No way Jose.

That's ok. He wouldn't want to date such a close minded bigot either

FindingMeno · 08/08/2025 14:02

Well I can't take them seriously.
And noone can make me.

Marybagg · 08/08/2025 14:04

i cannot believe over 50% say YABU.. absolutely you can't take a man wearing painted nails seriously, it just isn't a man thing to do. They have lost all credibility when they do this.

Men. Never.
