To think you can’t take a man with painted nails seriously?

I know people say “it’s just nail polish” but I can’t help feeling like a man with painted nails instantly loses credibility. Whether it’s in a corporate setting or just in everyday life, it gives off a certain vibe that makes it hard to take him seriously.

It’s not about being closed-minded, it’s just that some things don’t translate well across genders. Am I being unreasonable or do others feel the same?

i know men who rock their perfect nail varnish and have serious corporate jobs - all are into heavy rock/metal too. Two of them have black dyed hair the other is bald and all wear black with occasional dark blue or purple

There's a man that works the tills at my local co-op that has nails like that. Last time I saw him he had a petrol/metalic colour with a red painted car design on one finger.

Oooh into it, well done to that man

foxlover47 · 07/08/2025 23:03

I wouldn’t mind it at all , but then again I love machine gun Kelly , Olli Sykes , Yungblud etc and have always liked men like that.
i love seeing it , its art after all

I agree. I'm old and like pp grew up seeing men express themselves in many different ways - Bowie, goths, new romantics. Unlike many people today they generally didn't conflate this with some skewed idea of womanhood; just men who liked to express themselves through fashion.

My old siblings was New Romantics! I’m a bit younger so my time was more important the 90s!

Jellywobbles2 · 08/08/2025 00:29

Unless he’s a rock star I would find it very unattractive. I don’t think it would affect their credibility in my eyes though.

aWeeCornishPastie · 08/08/2025 09:16

I find it gross not going to lie

Pericombobulations · 08/08/2025 09:27

Another who grew up in the 80’s with New Romantics and then became a semi goth who doesn’t care what men or women want to wear.

TaborlinTheGreat · 08/08/2025 09:27

I'm not a fan of it as a look, but I certainly don't think men's 'credibility' shouldbe judged by it. If women don't want to be judged by how gender-stereotypical their appearance is, why should men be?

Darker · 08/08/2025 09:36

It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest and I would be making any assumptions about the whys and what’s. It’s their choice.

For those who don’t find it attractive to them, why does this matter? I don’t dress to please the men around me, and no man is under an obligation to make themselves attractive to me.

rurbane · 08/08/2025 10:01

It really shouldn't matter. Natural looking manicures look great on men. I'm a nail biter and mine can look awful. Being 100% honest if it was badly done, chipped or very stylised I'd notice it more than on a woman and if I already had concerns about their credibility it would add to them.

"I don't know what the fuck are you talking about."

tripleginandtonic · 08/08/2025 10:06

Wouldn't bother me.

Gross on women as well?

if not why not?

I actually prefer short painted nails that men usually wear than the long pointed elaborate nails we see on women.

purpledaze24 · 08/08/2025 10:19

YABU - it’s exactly this narrow-minded attitude that perpetuates stereotypes of what a man ‘should’ be and what a woman ‘should’ be and is driving the trans trenders (the increasing number of men hopping on the trans bandwagon and “becoming” a woman). Maybe some of these men just want to wear some nail varnish, make-up, maybe a dress some days. Can we please just shut up and let them without mocking them and driving them to transition

BauhausOfEliott · 08/08/2025 12:47

It’s not about being closed-minded

It absolutely is about being close-minded. Having a fixed idea about how men and women should dress/style themselves along rigid sex-based lines just to be 'taken seriously' is pretty much the epitome of close-minded. Your mind isn't even open enough to comprehend that some paint on someone's fingertips tells you nothing about how capable they are.

You don't have to find it aesthetically pleasing or attractive - that's all down to personal taste. But it's certainly close-minded if you're unable to take someone seriously because their aesthetic choices aren't the same as yours.

Is this something you see often? I've seen black nail polish on long haired teens, but not in a corporate setting.

I went to a work event recently, corporate setting, and there were several men who were sporting nail varnish, with beards and feminine earrings. It seems to be an agreed upon style. All three were quite hostile people I found. It was almost like it was a test to see if you expressed a problem with it.

PInkyStarfish · 08/08/2025 12:55

Nail polish on a man is revolting unless he’s a drag artist, wearing it for an acting role, is a musician or singer of a genre that sports that look or is a weirdo.

is it revolting on women too if they don’t fall into those categories?

if not, why not?

Minecroft · 08/08/2025 12:57

I normally just think “oh grow up” when I see this.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 08/08/2025 12:58

It's lovely on a woman and terrible on a man.
Why?
Its just some colour on nails.
What's actually wrong with it?
Specifically.

summertimeinLondon · 08/08/2025 13:00

I find overdone nails unprofessional on a woman or a man, tbh! But there’s a big difference between a coat of nail varnish or a French manicure; and massive long gel items with glitter and jewels on. I probably wouldn’t even notice the former, but the latter would really put me off whether on a man or a woman.

No idea why that posted twice. Sorry!

rainbowstardrops · 08/08/2025 13:01

I think it looks really nice on people like Yungblud and Harry Styles etc. Not much different to the punks and New Romantics from back in my day.
