Is there anything humans won't fuck up?!

I've just seen that NASA's building a nuclear reactor on the moon, building no-go in a race with China and India. BBC News link

Why?! Just why. It's bad enough we've covered our planet and choked its orbit in junk and pollution. Leave the moon alone! The last thing we need is another "resource-rich" bit of land for countries to fight over.

Nasa to build nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030 - US media

The reactor would provide power for humans on the Moon but there are questions about feasibility.

"According to American media."

It's not going to happen. It can't currently or in the next five years.

NotDarkGothicMama · 05/08/2025 19:05

Hopefully not but that won't stop them snarling at eachother like they're currently doing over the Arctic.

To answer your question, no. There's nothing we won't fuck up.

Almondmarcd · 05/08/2025 19:08

I’d be prepared to bet a large sum that this won’t happen.

User14March · 05/08/2025 19:13

Wouldn’t a moon base be more useful? Why can’t they colonise it ahead of Mars?

KnickerlessParsons · 05/08/2025 19:14

I agree. We’ve trashed the earth and now we’re going to trash the moon and mars too.

VintageMarket · 05/08/2025 19:27

Sounds like willy waving by men who have no idea how they will actually do it.
Even the scientist quoted in the article seems to think it's bilge.

No air, no water, no public transport and an en suite nuclear power station. The first estate agents on the moon are going to have a hard job making their commission.

Maxorias · 05/08/2025 19:29

Why does it matter ? The moon is a barren wasteland. I'd rather they build a nuclear plant there rather than on earth (though I'm a bit baffled by how they plan on bringing the energy they produce back to Earth).

VintageMarket · 05/08/2025 19:34

The nuclear power station currently being built in Somerset is three times over budget and about six years behind schedule (they've already been going hard at it since 2017). Somerset has a good road network, skilled people, air, water, gravity and a great bus service.

If it's this much of a ballache of a job in the west country (right alongside an existing nuclear power station) the idea of cutting the ribbon on one in space by 2035 sounds bananas.

Well it matters to us because they will be launching radioactive material through the Earth's atmosphere.

They plan to use the power up there for space antics. It's not for us Earthlings.

Speagle · 05/08/2025 19:40

We're a self-destructive species so clever and yet so dumb.

Milliejacksonhouseforsale · 05/08/2025 19:43

Yay wars for a planet that's not our own.
Human fuck ups on tour.

Although you are actually talking about a British project - we are supremely shit at completing any big build.

Almondmarcd · 05/08/2025 19:50

At some point we are going to have to leave the Earth and I expect it’s not going to be in the very distant future - a couple of centuries and the place is going to be barely habitable surely?

True. It's being built with French and Chinese money though.

samarrange · 05/08/2025 20:00

The only people who have fucked up here are the credulous news media who reported this obviously impossible story.

Oh give over. We haven’t trashed the Earth. The Earth is doing just fine and will long outlive us.

If we give it a chance. I doubt we as a species will be selfless enough to die out without taking much of the earth's life with us.
