Has food prices risen again this month?

Lifeisnotsimple · 05/08/2025 12:22

Been shopping today and I go to various shops to keep the cost down but even Aldi has added 10/20p to everyday items. Farmfoods is the only shop that seems to still have value. We,ve moved away from branded foods but even they are being hiked up, dont buy biscuits/cake, crisps or sweets anymore. When you go shopping now foods like tesco value oats etc the shelves are bare, Ive always bought them but now it seems more people are to. Tesco fresh rolls used to be lovely but now seem undercooked and doughy, so stopped buying them. I do a monthly shop and from last month it seems alot more expensive, not sure if this is my imagination.

You could try reporting individual posts to MN and explaining why. It's what Becky at MN recommended although I've not had a great experience.

childofthe607080s · 06/08/2025 18:53

are you classing all immigrants as illegal ? Before their status is determined? Including genuine asylum seekers ? Such muddles are common

https://www.reuters.com/article/world/fact-check-the-uk-is-not-housing-48000-illegal-immigrants-in-hotels-each-night-idUSKCN2592D6/

nearly 25000 illegals have been deported/left - the trick there is finding them because once you have them in a hotel you can send them back

What is it you’re not happy about?

Supermarket profits aren’t massive.
I think Tesco is low 20 million? Which sounds alot but is less than a Hollywood actor/ property developer or footballer gets paid. And considering Tesco has so many stores and is very popular.

ChatGPT gives a MUCH higher figure for Tesco’s’ profit after tax in the last tax year.

‘For the financial year ending 22 February 2025, Tesco reported a statutory profit after tax of £1.60 billion, a 9.1% decrease from the previous year's £1.76 billion’

Really what is racist, please don't undermine real racism with your faux racism. It is not racist to comment on the amount of money being spent on illegal immigration. Even the government themselves have all shared their concerns about the spiralling costs.

I don't get the link between any money spent on illegal immigration and the rise in food costs. What is the connection? Particularly when we know that a business like Tesco is making an enormous profit. Why are people linking the problem to immigrants when the issue is more about certain people getting richer?

I would love a decent explanation to this.

obv you have not been following the thread then. It was brought up way back by another post, someone has to pay for all this illegal immigration. The money fairy doesn't pay for it. The public pay for it via taxes. As taxes go up people have less money to pay for the spiralling cost of food. In 2024 it cost 6.4 billion quid to house and support illegal immigrants. That has risen to over 8 billion this yr. Before anyone asks these figures are from the home office.

Don't be rude. I've read the entire thread. I know it's been brought up. Do you really think the extra money we are paying at Tesco goes to fund immigration? How would that work? It goes to pay for the produce and the extra goes to the shareholders / owners in profit.

I haven't seen any explanation of how the rise in prices goes to fund immigration.

I’ve followed the thread. I thought you started it in good faith but seeing you happily support those trying to hijack it to blame global food prices on “illegals” in the UK and spreading propaganda which apparently they are unable to even read and comprehend I’ve changed my mind.

I’ll be leaving you and the others to circle down your own drain.

It doesn’t - global food prices are a consequence of a series of global crises.

Its worthy of a discussion but since that isn’t possible on MN without it being taken over by the alternative facts brigade I suggest leave them to it and find other places to discuss.

HappySummerDays · 06/08/2025 19:54

Exactly. I can't understand how some people seem to think it's the government somehow raising food prices and pocketing the difference to fund asylum seekers' accomodation or whatever.

I don't think its a matter about being frothy but at what exact point do you say enough is enough. When your child has no school place? when you can't access healthcare? when you can't even afford basics? Everyone has a point where it tips them over. These people who come here cost money and the costs are spiralling. Taxes go up to pay for it. Our infrastructure doesn't have the capcity to cope. So the question is what is your tipping point.

No school place, why? Birth rates and school numbers are falling and projected to fall further. Schools closing all the time.

Ive just spent 238 quid today for a monthly shop for 2 adults and 1 12yr old who eats like an adult. Never seen my fridge so bare. Its summer and you need to remortgage to buy fruit fgs. The quality of fresh fruit and veg is dire. Lasts 2 days at best. Potatoes are black. Shopping has become a nightmare. We eat just breakfast and dinner now. Skip lunch.

112 year old- wow that’s good going- must be due to all the nutritious food!

@C8H10N4O2 Why do you keep referring to Ukrainian refugees?? Am I missing something here because no one has mentioned them other than you.
Ukrainian refugees are genuine people escaping war. There are women and children that came here for help, and in my opinion, they weren't given enough help by our government.

The issue I have is so many of us are struggling now and the red carpet is being rolled out for ILLEGAL immigrats entering this country ILLEGALLY being housed in 4* hotels, 3 meals a day being provided, paid for mobile phones, clothes, dentistry, medical care, benefits & much much more which is costing an absolute fortune when hardworking people are on the breadline, missing meal, unable to cover outgoings. It's just so, so wrong!!

We are counting pennies here!!

Edited

Nobody illegal gets anything from the state as they're illegal. If they're caught they get deported. If they're not deported it's because they're legal.

You either don't live in the real world or yoi don't live in the UK.

Illegals entering the UK via small boats are put up in hotels, given 3 meals per say, money, mobile phones, clothing, health care & dentistry. It's an absolute fact and not made up!! This is costing the tax payer 8 million pounds per day so yeah, illegals do get given off the state and no they don't get deported!!

They were talking about rising food prices on Radio 4 yesterday, so yes I think you are right.

tedibear · 07/08/2025 10:54

Prices are def still rising. Every few weeks things seem to be going up. Chocolate prices have rocketed. I was shocked at the price of the multi packs (that are starting to become snack sized) often more than £2 for 4 tiny bars.

I get an online delivery from Morrisons and I pop in to home bargains every few weeks and buy stuff. I went to Aldi yesterday for the first time this year and I was shocked at the prices. A lot of stuff was inline with Morrisons which is usually more expensive. Some stuff was cheaper but a lot was similar.

HappySummerDays · 07/08/2025 11:03

I just looked at reasons for chocolate prices rising and found a report from an Irish website.
It looks as if chocolate prices are going to keep going up.

www.bordbia.ie/industry/news/insightful-articles/5-reasons-why-cocoa-prices-are-surging/

BIossomtoes · 07/08/2025 11:03

Given the obesity epidemic, it can only be a good thing if confectionery rises in price. Chocolate bars are just empty calories.

PrimalScreaming · 07/08/2025 12:06

I shop at Tesco and know the prices of what I buy... every week one of my regular items has gone up!
But I have developed a number of ways to try and mitigate price increases as they are not going to get any cheaper! Before I'm flamed , I know that I have the privilege of both time and a garden but I now regularly:

  1. Make all my own Greek yoghurt in the slow cooker for the price of a 4pt bottle of whole milk.
  2. Make all my own fruit compote to have with the yogurt from 2 apple trees in my garden. I process all the apples in Aug / Sept and freeze them. They last JUST the year for the 2 of us as a base when stewed. I add to these other foraged fruits (blackberries) or red currants from the garden with other spices, flavourings & honey.
  3. I use the 2 Good To Go app. We are lucky that there is a very good fruit & veg wholesaler who supplies restaurants who signed up locally. For £4 I get a fruit and veg box including everything from grapes, blueberries, mushrooms, corn on the cob, broccoli etc etc. Some of it is almost past its best but I either freeze or dehydrate for future use.
  4. I use online asian supermarkets
  5. I use the 'Best Before It's Gone' website - great for snacks and chocolate (Ritter Sport 75p recently) and currently have on order a 6 pack of Mr Organic Tomato & Veg Paste for £2.40 to use as a tomato base.
  6. Grow what fruit, veg & salad and herbs I can.
  7. Forage seasonally - blackberries now... sweet chestnuts next!
  8. Batch cook & yellow sticker

It does take time - luckily I have that... and I enjoy foraging / gardening etc. I also enjoy cooking and we eat very well I think. I know not everyone can adopt these methods... but you might find one or two things useful.

Jamfirstest · 07/08/2025 12:14

@PrimalScreamingcan you link me to how to make the fruit compote please? I have a holiday let with a huge apple crop this year. I’ve already frozen a few crumbles which were lovely. I need to make the yoghurt topping that sounds great.
also can you link me how to make the yoghurt? I have 2 slow cookers but I’ve never made it. Thank you I’m inspired xxx
