Has food prices risen again this month?

Lifeisnotsimple · 05/08/2025 12:22

Been shopping today and I go to various shops to keep the cost down but even Aldi has added 10/20p to everyday items. Farmfoods is the only shop that seems to still have value. We,ve moved away from branded foods but even they are being hiked up, dont buy biscuits/cake, crisps or sweets anymore. When you go shopping now foods like tesco value oats etc the shelves are bare, Ive always bought them but now it seems more people are to. Tesco fresh rolls used to be lovely but now seem undercooked and doughy, so stopped buying them. I do a monthly shop and from last month it seems alot more expensive, not sure if this is my imagination.

The increased cost of transportation - the biggest factor in inflation - is caused by an increase in oil prices which are controlled in the Middle East. What effect does the government have on that?

Not have the highest taxes in the world on fuel. Quite simple, really.

And not hit these businesses with £60b of additional NI costs. Again, not hard to understand.

BIossomtoes · 11/08/2025 07:24

Fuel tax was frozen in 2011 and was reduced by 5p a litre in 2022. It doesn’t account for the constant fluctuations in price and the consequent effect on inflation. So it isn’t simple at all.

Why are you changing the subject to NI, which doesn’t feature in the analysis of why inflation has risen?

NL, Italy and Greece all have higher fuel tax than us, for a start.

You're not doing very well on the old facts front.

Crack on. I'm ready!!

And how’s it going for Italy and Greece?

Not quite the flex you thought, eh?

We are still one of the cheapest countries for food.

So how come a really decent meal for 2 in Spain is about £40.00 and what you buy from a supermarket actually tastes like food?

Not a flex, just looking to stick to facts. Sorry if that troubles you. Lots of us like facts.

They tend to be a bit unwelcome in some parts of MN.

Code words for ‘ I don’t really understand how energy prices impact the economy so I’ll just stick in a random statement and harp on about facts’. You don’t really know what you’re arguing for, do you?

My goodness, that's quite patronising!

Is that your usual response when someone points out you have got your "facts" wrong?

Edited

It’s the usual response when someone has no clue what the original point was and will shoehorn something in pretending that it’s somehow clever but completely misses the point.

Oh you were trying to compete? On an internet forum. Do you not have some entertainment in real life? How sad.

Have you figured out what your point is yet. Or are you still in some kind of competition with strangers on the internet. Sad and immature.

taxidriver · 12/08/2025 07:20

the mince has gone up, beef has gone up.
i have had to go down a brand or whatever, and notice the increased fat in the meat that i now buy for spaghetti bolognaise.
Eggs are extortionate in Asda, i like to buy waitrose essential eggs but they are now 145 compared to 120 previously

i find i shop around more, some things from each supermarket for the best value

taxidriver · 12/08/2025 07:23

typical - the thread which was a Threads I'm on, has descended into madness

My point is trying to get people to stick to facts. You made a statement which was factually wrong. I corrected you. You've been sore ever since. You can respond as much as you like but that's just silly. I won't be clicking on any more notifications that say you've tagged me. My point is made. Sorry you can't accept it.

Are you feeling ok? You seem to be taking it personally that you made a point then could explain the relevance. And as the famous MN saying goes, you can flounce, you don’t need to announce your departure, this is not an airport.

Don't you ever dare to blame Labour.

Nothing to do with NI and NMW increases which affect retail and any other labour intense low margin businesses really badly, nothing to do with what farmer said above.

It's all external, our wonderful competent government are doing their best.

Oh well...

Yep. It was even said this would happen and they went ahead.

That wasn’t the original point. The biggest impact on inflation currently is transportation fuel costs, nothing to do with energy. You attempted to pin the blame for this on the government - when duty has been frozen for over ten years and actually reduced for the last three. It was also pointed out that all petroleum products are imported and price rises are at the supply end. You segued into energy prices.

Oh for goodness’ sake children, please!!

Yes food & drink are flippin expensive, it’s multi factorial but we still have to eat so it hits us whatever way you cut the numbers.

I was cross to find a multi pack of curly wurlys was now £1.25 for 4!!! In asda Last year I was buying them for 5 for a £1 (possibly club card in tesco ) but I put them back 🤣

Also Tesco is incharge of my food habits now. Unless it's on club card I'm not buying it 🤣
