Been shopping today and I go to various shops to keep the cost down but even Aldi has added 10/20p to everyday items. Farmfoods is the only shop that seems to still have value. We,ve moved away from branded foods but even they are being hiked up, dont buy biscuits/cake, crisps or sweets anymore. When you go shopping now foods like tesco value oats etc the shelves are bare, Ive always bought them but now it seems more people are to. Tesco fresh rolls used to be lovely but now seem undercooked and doughy, so stopped buying them. I do a monthly shop and from last month it seems alot more expensive, not sure if this is my imagination.

I went to Tesco on Sunday, spent £78 and there is barely anything in the fridge. I normally spend a lot more but I had to dash home. I reckon I can get a week's meals out of it, there are only two of us, if I bulk out the mince with veg and we have one baked potato night and one omelette night and I cook from scratch. But realistically £78 didn't go far at all. Very sobering.

Ive just spent 238 quid today for a monthly shop for 2 adults and 1 12yr old who eats like an adult. Never seen my fridge so bare. Its summer and you need to remortgage to buy fruit fgs. The quality of fresh fruit and veg is dire. Lasts 2 days at best. Potatoes are black. Shopping has become a nightmare. We eat just breakfast and dinner now. Skip lunch.

Funny I thought my weekly shop seemed cheap this week - £49 for two adults and two dogs - and that includes fresh lamb, beef, chicken and decent shampoo and conditioner.

AtomicBlondeRose · 05/08/2025 20:19

I noticed yesterday that 8 Lidl caramel wafers were exactly the same price as the same size packet of Tunnocks ones. The own brand used to be miles cheaper!

Yes! It seems crazy! I’ve been making soups and stews recently and luckily the kids have been loving it (I know, I know, it’s definitely not the right season for it). We’ve had lots of veg pasta too, which is also going down very well, luckily. But the amount of money we spend on food seems to be going up every single month. We live mostly off of veg, whole grains or potatoes, dairy products, eggs, fruit, a lot less meat than we ever have done before and the occasional treats. We cook almost all meals from scratch. No takeaways. We’re managing and not scraping by or anything, but every single month it creeps up and we keep wondering how we’ve spent our food budget without buying anything particularly luxurious (and in fact, being very conscious of what we spend our money on).

Same here, ive cut all the rubbish out like cakes, biscuits, crisps. I meal plan not strictly but its so easy because we eat the same things over and over. Plus I spend the whole evening comparing prices on the internet. Tbh even some stuff on amazon is cheaper than in stores like dog food etc. This month has shocked me tho.

We have cut back on a lot, now buy the bare minimum no treats and majority we buy are not named brands but supermarket own.

We also now rarely buy meat as the price has gone up too much. Others must be thinking the same as us as there now seems to be a lot of beef/chicken left on the shelves where as before it was nearly empty when I went to buy.

I’m not loyal now to any supermarket, I shop with who has the best offers that week.

My tiny contribution - trying to lose weight. Today fancied something "chocolatey". Just wanted something small. 37g bag of Maltesers £1!! They're still in the shop. Looking at you "Caring, Sharing Co-op" 👀

Netcurtainnelly · 05/08/2025 20:34

I heard that they would go up.again by Christmas.

BarilynBordeaux · 05/08/2025 20:35

Never seen my fridge so empty for £60. Nearly actually cried.

Do you think they should sell at a loss?

TheSummerITurnedChubby · 05/08/2025 20:43

I know this is only a minor thing but a year or so ago a packet of five Freddo frogs went from £1 to £1.20 in Tesco; I noticed because I buy them every couple of weeks for treats

Today they had gone up to £1.40 - but also there are only FOUR in the pack. They’ve doubled in price in just over a year. There is a problem with cocoa bean prices at the moment I know, but honestly how much cocoa bean is in a Freddo?!

InsanityPolarity · 05/08/2025 20:44

I’ve cut back on all the cakes and biscuits and replaced them with baking ingredients. I’ve found recipes that use less eggs, some that use oil instead of butter and I’ve discovered that you can replace an egg with some yoghurt in a quite a few cake recipes.
As for crisps, I barely buy them anymore. We tend to get some popping corn and make our own popcorn instead.
How expensive is chocolate now? Haven’t bought any in ages except chocolate chips for baking.

@Fragmentedbrain

Companies like Tesco are making billions.

This is what I don’t get. How do they get away with this. It’s all out in the open and there’s not enough outrage over this.
This is also the case with energy companies.

InsanityPolarity · 05/08/2025 20:51

I noticed toilet rolls have shrunk again but the price is the same.

Exactly the same with the Cadbury little bars which I buy most weeks.
Used to get 6 in the pack and this week it's 4 in the pack for same price.

Cadbury have been clever though as the 6 pack were rows of 3 one in front of the other and now the pack of four looks bigger as they are laid out in four single layer.

GleisZwei · 05/08/2025 20:58

Yes, many prices are rising, especially of good quality foods.

Fancied spaghetti bolognese the other day so bought some Tesco mince which last time I purchased it (a month or so ago) was £3.79*, and paid £4.95. Now bracing myself for similar increases elsewhere

(*it was not a Clubcard offer)

I went to buy a packet of beef mince last week and couldn't believe it was a fiver. I put it back and got some pork mince for half the price.

Yep. Same in our local Tesco.

I couldn’t believe it when DH told me. A quid for a fun size bag of Malteasers. Mine had 12 in.

tombombaclot · 05/08/2025 21:05

God yes! I get shopping delivered, comparing receipts from a year ago to today, even a month ago to today is 😭😭😭

Dymaxion · 05/08/2025 21:07

I have discovered the joy that is Dhal, can make a massive pot of the stuff and then add veggies whenever I want some, so frozen cauliflower roasted in the airfryer with spices is nice or frozen butternut squash or spinach, I take it to work or have it for my evening meal, works out pretty cheaply if you buy the lentils in the foreign food bit at the supermarket or better still from a World foods supermarket.
Also tins of beans, I make marry me beans which are really tasty, chickpea or bean salads are good too, and filling.
Most of the meat in the freezer is reduced stuff that I have got from Aldi when shopping later in the day.
I also get their 50/50 pork and beef mince to make bolognaise , can't tell the difference between that and 100% beef once its cooked and Ive added a bottle of cheap red wine
What I can't understand is how expensive courgettes are at the moment, its got to the point that I am going to stake out allotments to see if I can help people with any glut they might have !

I noticed that too.

FightingFish · 05/08/2025 21:14

Yes, even Lidl seems expensive now. Over the last few years my wages have increased by a couple of percent but the food bill has increased by about 30%. I now visit different shops for different things. Home Bragains is good for toiletries, cleaning products, Chocolate and toilet roll is most reasonable in farmfoods, I get fruit from a local market but meat and veg is expensive everywhere, I mainly shop in Lidl for meat, veg, rice, pasta etc. This takes more time but as I can no longer afford to go out much I have the time to shop around a bit!

CozyCoupe · 05/08/2025 21:34

I really don't find much difference between Aldi and tesco in cost now, Aldi used to be loads cheaper. When people say they save loads by going to Aldi, I assume they're buying branded products from places like tesco. I've noticed a lot of random things hike recently - Aldi rump steaks were 2.99 for ages, went up to 3.99, today I noticed they were over 4. And their peach schnapps is now over 7, it used to be 4.50!!

I popped into co-op last week and got bread, milk, a packet of twix bars and some kids yoghurts and the total was TWEVLE QUID. I was genuinely outraged 😂.

Round my allotments if you hold up a sign saying can I have a few courgettes at the gates you'd probably get about 4 wheelbarrow loads dumped at your feet in about 10 seconds.

Sadly I don't grow them as I refuse to grow things that have no flavour, so don't bother with things like courgettes, asparagus and the like. Not that I dislike them, just nothing to like about them.

Now winter squash I can do by the truckload as unlike their summer counterparts they do have flavour and last for months (just finishing off the last of the 2024 crop now with this year's crop a couple of weeks away from harvest)
