Has food prices risen again this month?

Been shopping today and I go to various shops to keep the cost down but even Aldi has added 10/20p to everyday items. Farmfoods is the only shop that seems to still have value. We,ve moved away from branded foods but even they are being hiked up, dont buy biscuits/cake, crisps or sweets anymore. When you go shopping now foods like tesco value oats etc the shelves are bare, Ive always bought them but now it seems more people are to. Tesco fresh rolls used to be lovely but now seem undercooked and doughy, so stopped buying them. I do a monthly shop and from last month it seems alot more expensive, not sure if this is my imagination.

Food inflation last month was something like 4.5%.
Luckily we've lots of garden veg and fruit at the moment

ConcernedOfClapham · 05/08/2025 13:53

Fancied spaghetti bolognese the other day so bought some Tesco mince which last time I purchased it (a month or so ago) was £3.79*, and paid £4.95. Now bracing myself for similar increases elsewhere

(*it was not a Clubcard offer)

DoNoTakeNo · 05/08/2025 14:00

Interesting point on the Tesco bread rolls - a classic case of (failed) reformulation of the recipe, perhaps with a bit more water in it and a bit less baking time / temperature. Every little helps to bring the manufacturing cost down, eh?

Pinkflower100 · 05/08/2025 14:02

Seems to be. I spent £150 this week and kids said there was barely
anything there. 😢

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 05/08/2025 14:03

Definitely

Ablondiebutagoody · 05/08/2025 14:06

We're in for a decade (at least) of sky high inflation.

Lifeisnotsimple · 05/08/2025 14:34

Its scary how many people on local village fb groups are asking for food. Its disgusting in 2025 that people are struggling to even do a basic food shop.

Tbh I think we are in for a major recession.

Awful isnt it, meat has always been expensive but even veg is creeping up, roll on winter when I make massive pots of stew etc

Yes

Stade197 · 05/08/2025 14:45

Yes I have noticed a rise in food prices again. I used to buy ribeye steak from aldi as an occasional treat for dinner, they were less than £4 each the last time I bought them (around 2 months ago), I noticed yesterday they are now £5.69 each so I couldn't bring myself to buy them!

Londonrach1 · 05/08/2025 14:48

Yes. My food bill for first time ever was over 100 and I never spent that much and hadn't even got the toilet rolls I needed ...

Witchtower · 05/08/2025 17:38

Yea and also a lot of people are opting for the economy food as they are less processed than the branded products.

somanythingssolittletime · 05/08/2025 17:50

Yes food prices are insane. I also shop around as much as I can, but with a full time job and no help with childcare it’s hard to always do that. 2 weeks ago milk was £1.45 now it’s £1.70.. I sometimes skip meals telling people I am on a diet so that my kids have decent food to eat. Worse is that we are considered a “high earning” family so we can’t claim any gov help. And yet we can’t make ends meet. Life is terrible atm

Meadowfinch · 05/08/2025 18:02

Not that I've noticed.

Coffee, hake, cheese, veg, fruit, milk, chicken are the same. Crisps, snacks, ds' pizza, garlic bread all the same.

Eggs and pork possibly slightly higher.

But I cook from scratch, bake my own bread so few processing costs.

Edited

See, I don't get this.

We have frozen pizza once a week. That's it. Everything else is from scratch, baked potatoes, pasta etc. I'm very boring.

But yes I do notice the increase, it really isn't about buying ready meals and junk. And bread really isn't cheaper to make than buy, assuming you are buying from Tesco etc. I know because I do make my own bread on weekends/ when we have guests.

On a side note, Tesco's bread/bakery and meat quality has always been shocking.

SunshineMountain · 05/08/2025 18:17

Yes! It seems crazy! I’ve been making soups and stews recently and luckily the kids have been loving it (I know, I know, it’s definitely not the right season for it). We’ve had lots of veg pasta too, which is also going down very well, luckily. But the amount of money we spend on food seems to be going up every single month. We live mostly off of veg, whole grains or potatoes, dairy products, eggs, fruit, a lot less meat than we ever have done before and the occasional treats. We cook almost all meals from scratch. No takeaways. We’re managing and not scraping by or anything, but every single month it creeps up and we keep wondering how we’ve spent our food budget without buying anything particularly luxurious (and in fact, being very conscious of what we spend our money on).

Fragmentedbrain · 05/08/2025 18:20

I mostly drink wine and eat what the wretched marketers at m&s would call picky bits so I try to just swoop on deals. Supermarket food is still a lot cheaper in the UK than most other European countries.

Fragmentedbrain · 05/08/2025 18:21

Olive oil is a lot cheaper than a year ago too

Really? This is interesting! Any particular examples please?

Ragingoverlife · 05/08/2025 18:31

I was cross to find a multi pack of curly wurlys was now £1.25 for 4!!! In asda Last year I was buying them for 5 for a £1 (possibly club card in tesco ) but I put them back 🤣

Also Tesco is incharge of my food habits now. Unless it's on club card I'm not buying it 🤣

Usernamesarejustnotavailable · 05/08/2025 19:31

I've noticed weekly price increases and always check my receipts afterwards. This week I noticed that the essential values block of cheese from Aldi is almost up to £5

I used to get the 20% mince which a few years ago was £1.59. Now £3.09 or something stupid

Boredlass · 05/08/2025 19:38

We are still one of the cheapest countries for food.

same here, we earn a good wage and both of us work, we have no debt apart from the mortgage but food is a headache to keep cost down.
