“Just as wasteful” indicates you think second hand is wasteful, when it’s clearly the complete opposite? Wasteful is buying a newborn sleepsuit that gets worn once and chucked into landfill.

Also, please can I have your stain remover secrets, bolognese is my nemesis.

Hanging in direct sunlight works brilliantly for bolognese or anything tomato based.

Sorry I’m derailing here - does it need to be soaked or anything, or just literally hung up dry in the sun?!

I probably wouldn't gift one to someone else, but ds has some of my childhood teddies and I've bought a second hand Teddy off vinted as a duplicate of his favourite Teddy just incase anything ever happened to it. It went straight in the wash.

I have no issue with second hand toys/books/ games that are in really good condition- I'd say 90% of ds's books are second hand. But I am picky about the condition and none of what I've bought 'looks' second hand if that makes sense.

Soft toys and blankets and clothes I'm generally a bit more wary about unless I know the home they're coming from because I don't want to introduce fleas or bedbugs etc into my home.

PixiePuffBall · 04/08/2025 21:51

If it's washed thoroughly, fine

Washed as normal then hung out to dry in direct sunlight seems to work, no soaking or stain remover needed.

I wouldnt for a newborn.

I would for a toddler.

Out of curiosity (and as someone who has a cuddly toy collection) Why have you got them a second hand cuddly toy? Becuase if its like a rare special edition thing thats more keepsake than comforter I might think that was ok. Or you were looking for this toy specifically for a reason?

I don't want to shop on vinted or in charity shops. Since when was that snobby? You do realise that in order for these places to sell things that are "as good as new", they need people like me to donate?
I don't care if they get a single wear out of it, it's my money to waste. Even though I don't see it as wasteful, plenty of grown women have wardrobes full of clothes they've worn once/never worn.

This makes me so sad. It’s not about the money you ‘wasted’. Would you really not care if a garment was only worn once? And yes, I feel the same way about wardrobes full of clothes that have never been worn or only worn once, and the owner is buying new stuff on a regular basis. It’s just so wasteful- and of course I’m not talking about the money. I don’t care if others waste their own money- set fire to wads of cash for all I care. But I do care about the environment and landfill and people who live in poverty working in clothes factories earning pennies a day. Obviously everyone has to buy clothes, that in itself isn’t wasteful, but I think people are a bit dim if they don’t ever give any thought to the production and disposal of the clothes and how this might impact others and not just themselves.

If it's a first child PFB the parents probably won't appreciate it. If it's their third child they won't give a damn! Will they even know it's second hand?

I'm so glad all these people are out there buying 100% new stuff for their DC, it means loads of lovely second hand stuff for those of us who don't care about buying new! I don't think I've ever bought a new pair of shoes for my DC in 10 years, £40 for 6 months of wear? No thanks!

mondaytosunday · 04/08/2025 22:01

I’d give my own child second hand, but not as a gift.

Campingisnexttogodliness · 04/08/2025 22:03

Mil got ds a rocking horse from a skip.
Dh took it straight back to aforementioned skip.

Fairy washing up liquid is good for oily stuff, cold soak it in then wash it.

Also, bit gross.. spit is good for getting tomato out.. something about breaking down the enzymes. Then obviously wash the spit out

Gowlett · 04/08/2025 22:09

Think the Teddy is a gesture, so it’s not just a cash gift.

buswankerbabe · 04/08/2025 22:11

No! God….! Cuddly toys are inexpensive anyway.

everardshutthatdoor · 04/08/2025 22:31

I had second hand everything for our PFB and even I would baulk at a second hand soft toy. Are they perhaps short of money but wanted to give you something? It's a weird gift.

workingitout1234 · 04/08/2025 22:51

They are not short of money. Not at all, they told me it was Vinted, not a special brand jellycat just a bog standard teddy. Can’t understand it why bother. Will probably pop in charity bag in case of bed bugs etc
if I knew the home it had come from different story but we don’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

everardshutthatdoor · 04/08/2025 23:14

I would be honest and say thank you for the thought but you've decided to regift to charity as you don't feel comfortable with not knowing where it came from.

Something that might get a lot of cuddling needs to be box fresh.

My 5 year old gave her pregnant teacher one of her (barely touched) jellycat bunnies (I did also contribute to class collection). Thought that was quite sweet at the time, up to the teacher if she used it though!

Aww but that's got sentimental value because it was hers... that's so sweet of her to give this to her teacher.

Op why would you give it to charity if you're worried it has bed bugs ?

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/08/2025 23:45

Oh for goodness’ sake, of course it’s fine! Pop it through a wash/dry without detergent.

GoAwayNaughtyPigeon · 05/08/2025 23:58

To give to someone else's child? No. But I readily admit that one of DD2's Christmas presents this year (she is only 2 days old atm 😂) will be a wrapped up teddy and blanket that her older sister abandoned a long time ago, long enough that DD1 won't even remember they were once technically hers. I wouldn't regift DD1's things to her newborn sister if I suspected she'd know it was "hers", but I'm also not going out and buying a new teddy/blanket to give to a newborn who won't even know wtf it is lol

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/08/2025 00:10

Why on earth no? If you care about that baby’s future, recycling is surely the way to go?

Dstoat · 06/08/2025 00:15

Gross. There’s no way I’d give a second hand soft toy for a newborn. Most cant be properly washed and dried and even then…ewww

Someone who is happy to take that risk on can choose to buy it or not to.
I’m not happy to take that risk on

as women we are often in charge of the inventory of our homes and we have to draw the line sometimes at what can and cannot stay in our homes or risk having endless items to maintain clean and store and it gets ridiculous

Op, If you suspect something has bed bugs you don't send it to the charity shop. Ppl buying from charity shops arent probably even thinking of such things so when you say its their choice, it just sounds silly, not to mention the spread of the bed bugs within the shop. Also, I have no idea what the other stuff you wrote was in relation to, I made no comment about ones 'inventory' !! That's your business what you have in your home and I'm in agreement that one can have what ever one want, in ones 'inventory'. 🤦‍♀️

BertieBotts · 06/08/2025 22:34

She doesn't think it has bed bugs, she just doesn't want it because it's second hand and there is a miniscule possibility it might have bed bugs Confused but clothes are fine 🤷‍♀️

Not sure why knowing a house would make you more aware of potential bug contamination, it's not like they hold up a sign announcing their presence.
