You can shop for second hand basics as well as spending on brand new designer items you know!

Same here, I don’t see spending money on my children as pointless or wasting it, they deserve nice things.

Exactly, I'm not loaded in any way but I'd rather I go without something to buy my child something new. I can't fathom how people don't think that way about their children 🤷

Why waste money when they just grow? There are some lovely newborn clothes in charity shops. It's pointless buying new when they grow/be sick etc...

I don't see clothing my child as a waste of money. Not pointless in the slightest.

ScrambledEggs12 · 04/08/2025 20:02

My 5 year old gave her pregnant teacher one of her (barely touched) jellycat bunnies (I did also contribute to class collection). Thought that was quite sweet at the time, up to the teacher if she used it though!

Abracadabra12 · 04/08/2025 20:03

I’d be fine with it as long as it was clean

workingitout1234 · 04/08/2025 20:04

I received it. I’m a very second hand mum, for baby grows etc as it can be washed. The teddy. Not a special one just a bog standard one from the range. Label on it is faded.
apparently they had credit on Vinted so used it. They also gave some cash which was kind, I can’t help but think why bother giving a second hand teddy

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 04/08/2025 20:05

Teddies are pointless for newborns so it’s pointless and weird going to the effort to source a cheap second hand one. I’m a big fan of second hand clothes from the get go but a soft toy should be new or it’s just not worth it.

LittlleMy · 04/08/2025 20:06

LeedsZebra90 · 04/08/2025 19:15

Second hand like it's been passed down by a family member, great. Otherwise I'd say no.

Pretty much this. If there was a personal story attached then I’d be quite touched if I was a mum especially as vintage is fashionable let’s face it so win win. But a random used soft toy no - just sends out the message you couldn’t be bothered paying extra for something new (even if this isn’t the reason).

ClaredeBear · 04/08/2025 20:07

If I loved it I’d thoroughly wash and dry it.

Bitzee · 04/08/2025 20:13

Nothing wrong with second hand clothes so long as they get a good wash. It’s so much better environmentally! But typically you get them for yourself and not for others. If they were from your baby and you’re handing them down then that’s one thing but it’s not really normal to gift second hand stuff you’ve bought off vinted. A second hand soft toy for a newborn is even stranger since it’s not even a necessary thing. Newborns are supposed to sleep in an empty cot so they shouldn’t have soft toys at all. Lots of people introduce a comforter after 6 months and toddlers can get very attached to toys but IME it always seems to be something random and not the 101 jellycats you were pointlessly gifted after baby was born. Honestly I didn’t appreciate soft toys as baby gifts when they were brand new and I’d think you were nuts (and also cheap) if you gave me an obviously second hand one for a newborn.

I saw a dress on Vinted for my daughter, Next, this season £2.50 (possibly had been worn once, it was genuinely immaculate). In the shops - £19. Maybe if I had a ton of cash to burn, but even then, it’s a beautiful dress for a fraction of the price

Allswellthatendswelll · 04/08/2025 20:20

I buy everything on vinted including presents (usually I buy new with tags). I think there is enough stuff in the world!

A bit torn as buying a teddy new seems silly when there are so many second hand. But it must have been v cheap depending on the teddy- unless it's an antique one?

Also a teddy is a completely pointless gift for a baby imo. DS got loads and has never shown any interest in any of them!

You can clothe them in lovely clothes off vinted/charity shops.
Stop being so snobby. There are lovely 2nd hand items around.
Why buy new for a child when they will grow out of it in less than a year. What a waste of money and such a waste of resources.

Allswellthatendswelll · 04/08/2025 20:46

I guess if they gave you money the teddy is just a token thing. So you can give to charity shop or jumble sale if you want to.

Because I’m trying to teach my children that the planet is important and irreplaceable, and that humans live unsustainably. I want them to learn that humans very often take more than we need, and that our penchant for acquiring new stuff all the time is incredibly destructive to the planet, as well as to the humans who work in the factories in the parts of the world where all the crap is made. I want them to know that the very special and magical parts of life have absolutely nothing to do with capitalism and everything to do with love, friendship and community.

I had a second-hand pram for my DC1, and then when DC2 came along, I bought a second-hand double buggy. We also had a second hand Moses basket (new mattress) and a mix of clothes- new, charity shops and hand-me-downs. Toys and books often came from charity shops too. I even bought second-hand cloth nappies!

They are young adults now and buy most of their clothes from charity shops and Vinted 🙂

I wouldn’t give a second hand cuddly toy as a gift, but would buy one for my own child, if it was in good condition and came from a smoke and pet free home.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 04/08/2025 20:57

Sounds like the money is the real gift, and the teddy is just a nice extra. I wouldn’t be offended.

LouH1981 · 04/08/2025 21:01

I’d buy one for my own and give it a thorough wash. I wouldn’t gift one though.

DiscoBeat · 04/08/2025 21:02

No. Pristine new things from a reputable shop only for newborns.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 04/08/2025 21:05

I put all soft toys and clothing in the washing machine before I give them to my children whether they are new or 2nd hand. New does not always equal clean, things fall on the shop floor etc

I don't want to shop on vinted or in charity shops. Since when was that snobby? You do realise that in order for these places to sell things that are "as good as new", they need people like me to donate?
I don't care if they get a single wear out of it, it's my money to waste. Even though I don't see it as wasteful, plenty of grown women have wardrobes full of clothes they've worn once/never worn.

I do the same, especially as it’s one bolognese or biro away from being ruined.

If you're not willing to spend time removing stains then you're just as wasteful.

Oh don’t you worry thejoyofnc I do try, but there are occasions where it doesn’t work, then it will go in with messy play

“Just as wasteful” indicates you think second hand is wasteful, when it’s clearly the complete opposite? Wasteful is buying a newborn sleepsuit that gets worn once and chucked into landfill.

Also, please can I have your stain remover secrets, bolognese is my nemesis.
