I've never watched it before (apart from half the episode where Carrie loses her shoes and is a bitch about it). Its absolutely awful and such bad acting!

Did people really like it originally? Or was it one of those things people said they liked because they thought they should?

I dont think it's just looking at it through modern eyes. I cant imagine I would have thought much of it at the time either.

I liked it for seeing New York, the fashion, the apartments and the stories.
I'd have liked it to continue so I could have seen Charlotte and Miranda bringing up their kids. Exclusive schools etc. Rather than them being toddlers and then straight to older teenagers.

OtherS · 04/08/2025 16:08

I watched them at the time, but never liked any of the characters. Can't stand Carrie, always found her really cringey. And none of the relationships made much sense to me, either the romantic ones or the friendships. Why would Steve want Miranda? Why would Baryshnikov want Carrie? Why would Charlotte be friends with Samantha, or vice versa? Didn't much like any of the clothes either tbh. But it was pretty watchable, and only short episodes. There probably was also an element of it being such a big deal it would be weird to not watch it. Haven't watched any of the reboot though as it looks dreadful.

misskatamari · 04/08/2025 16:08

Loved it then and love it now (maybe nostalgia but I’ve rewatched it all multiple times including a few months ago). It’s fine if it’s not for you. We all like different things, which makes life interesting

I can see your point but some people do decide to continue with unplanned pregnancies even if they waiver over choices Miranda waa very organised and career minded, this storyline threw a curve ball at her.

I know, that's what makes it especially baffling. She decided on a whim to have a baby, even though she told Carrie minutes before that she hardly even had time to schedule the abortion.

I just don't buy that women decide on whim to have a baby if they have a surprise pregnancy. Even posts on here confirm this. Some posters come on here saying that could never have an abortion and so never even schedule one.

But Miranda is completely sure at the beginning of the episode that she does not want to continue the pregnancy and then decides during her appointment to make a life-changing decisions like having a baby. It's out of character.

Didimum · 04/08/2025 16:11

I loved SATC. I could watch it on repeat. I didn’t have to think they were all excellent people always doing the plausible and upstanding thing to find it entertaining. Weird that you’d care so much.

I thought Miranda,Charlotte and Sammantha were all individually friends with Carrie and that's how they all became friend's?

MadisonMarieParksValetta · 04/08/2025 16:14

I liked it back in the day. But the new series is a total joke. Miranda is so off putting and the actress who plays Charlotte has completely forgotten how to act. It's actually very funny to watch her struggle.

Yeah, but I find that weird. If you meet a friend's friend and you have loads in common and get on really well, you might form a group with them both. But if you have nothing in common and are seemingly opposed on all your views and beliefs, why would you keep hanging around them? Surely you'd be polite if you were ever both at an event with your mutual pal, but that would be the extent of the relationship. You wouldn't spend half your life hanging out with them, you'd usually hang out with other friends and probably be a bit irritated if your mate kept inviting her weird posse to lunch with you both. Yet we never see any of them having any other friends. Maybe because they're all so unlikeable?!

Yes the actress who plays Charlotte is terrible, and something weird is going on with her mouth i assume the actress has had plastic surgery
I hated the Miranda and Che story line but don't mind her character now she's kicked Che into touch it was all to try hard
I watch it becsuse I loved SATC it's OK but not great.

genesis92 · 04/08/2025 16:25

Yes many, many people REALLY like it. It’s why it so famous

Its strange that we can all enjoy different things isn’t it

Account734 · 04/08/2025 16:25

Youdontseehow · 04/08/2025 13:45

I loved SATC when it first came out. The characters were pretty funny and the glamour was easy on the eye. Started to like it less as it went on and they tried to make it more “meaningful” than just a jaunty yarn about 4 females in NYC.

Absolutely hated AJLT - totally ruined it by going soooo woke.

Good to know thanks. I haven't watched it and won't bother now.

FrostiesAreCornflakesForPeopleWhoCantFaceReality · 04/08/2025 16:27

I liked it but parts of it haven’t aged well and in hindsight I perceive many of the characters differently: Aiden and Steve are Nice Guys rather than nice guys. As in they both come across as toxic and young me didn’t see it at the time. And Carrie is a shit friend and a lousy girlfriend. Her and Big deserved each other really. But she annoyed me back then too. Samantha was the best character of all of them.

whitewineandsun · 04/08/2025 16:30

I loved it, but I always hated Carrie. They all had issues, frankly. But I watched for Miranda. Then the sequel ruined everything.

And yes, I did love Samantha. It was a groundbreaking show at the time.

Peggysue14 · 04/08/2025 14:02

I’ve started to watch it for the first time, I’m on series one but I’m really not enjoying it very much, does it get better?

I think if you really don’t like it, it’s not worth keeping going. But in my opinion season 1 is the worst.

Housewife2010 · 04/08/2025 16:33

Theteenandme · 04/08/2025 13:47

Because I have just watched 5 episodes to see what I was missing. 😂
I have realised it's not getting better so have turned it off now.

I can't imagine everything sitting through 5 episodes of something I'm not enjoying. I managed 1 episode of Emily in Paris before switching off.
I really enjoyed SATC at the time. I gave up on the sequel very quickly. Recently SATC has been repeated late on Saturday nights. I've been watching it and still really enjoyed it.

pennypans · 04/08/2025 16:38

I loved it & still like it. Yes the characters are exaggerated for storyline purposes but what else can you expect. They are also flawed.

StrawberrySquash · 04/08/2025 16:40

Surely it's not that unusual to be horrified you are pregnant but eventually decide to keep it? I have one friend who was absolutely going to have the abortion but didn't.

It did annoy me too though that every soap did the same. I was always mildly frustrated that no one ever seemed to go through with the abortion. But, as well as the actress being pregnant problem, it's also a plotline with a lot more story if she goes on to have the baby.

nobodysdaughter · 04/08/2025 16:42

Series one is completely different to the others. Maybe start the second series?

wipebored · 04/08/2025 16:42

It was of it's time, sure the characters were annoying but it was more about the lifestyle of an exciting, professional life in NYC more than anything else. It was a bit of fluff escapism.

x2boys · 04/08/2025 16:44

It's nearly 30 years old so it going to have aged it was from a different time i still enjoy it though but it's not for everyone
I recently watched a couple of episodes of Terry and June and thought it was appalling but people must have found it funny at the time.

Americano75 · 04/08/2025 16:49

I still watch it, and I do look forward to AJLT every week despite its many flaws. I'll be sad when it ends!

ShesTheAlbatross · 04/08/2025 17:08

DiggingHoles · 04/08/2025 15:08

What irritated me was the abortion fake-out story that so many shows did during that time. Miranda got pregnant, planned an abortion and then didn't go through with it. Why not just leave the abortion part out of it then? It felt so moralistic to see nearly all female characters in shows around that time change their mind. They only wrote these scenarios because the actresses of these characters happened to be pregnant at that time and they had to write in something dramatic to explain the character being pregnant and it was always a damn abortion fake-out.

Only Scandal actually had Olivia go through with it and it was revolutionary. Still is, considering the abortion rights women in the US have lost.

I agree to a certain extent. But those episodes did have Carrie and Samantha talking about the fact they’d had 1 and 2 abortions each, respectively. And they had them with no discussion around ongoing regret or guilt.

3678194b · 04/08/2025 17:16

I've tried to watch it but can't.

When it first came out I couldn't identify with any of the characters, they were 10-15 years older than me and I found it a bit cringe.

Since then I've tried to watch it but just can't get into it. Rubbish imo.

Charabanc · 04/08/2025 15:14

But you have to understand that lots of American men are circumcised, not just Jewish men.

SATC is so unpopular and unwatchable that there are two current threads on Mumsnet about it 😆

I am (and was) aware but it still hasn’t aged well.

Especially as we become more aware of bodily autonomy and that people should not be expected to mutilate their genitalia to meet their partner’s physical preference.

JHound · 04/08/2025 17:23

PermanentTemporary · 04/08/2025 15:15

I remember watching Borgen and a character had ill advised sex, got pregnant and had an abortion all in episode 1. Made me realise how in US TV shows and even most films no woman ever actually has an abortion - the pro choice bit is that they consider the option, that’s it. Tbh it’s not that common in uk to either. It was amazing to watch Always, Often, Sometimes, Never (? going to have to check the title).

Well two of the characters had had abortions and spoke about that openly.
