I've never watched it before (apart from half the episode where Carrie loses her shoes and is a bitch about it). Its absolutely awful and such bad acting!

Did people really like it originally? Or was it one of those things people said they liked because they thought they should?

I dont think it's just looking at it through modern eyes. I cant imagine I would have thought much of it at the time either.

I absolutely loved it!!! I have so much nostalgia fir it and still love it now 😍 She was needy and could be awful and wasn't perfect! That was the point.
I also totally 100% agreed with her about the shoes! I'm certainly not a follower of anything popular or fashionable. I just enjoyed it.

Agree. I still love it and rewatch it regularly.

GroovyChick87 · 04/08/2025 15:16

I loved it. I first saw it when I was about 15 and quickly got addicted to it. I enjoyed both movies although they were cringe and I also like And Just Like That. There were definitely faults and inconsistencies with it and bits that irritated me about their characters but it's my favourite of all time.

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 04/08/2025 15:16

I enjoyed it at the time, I sometimes watch the repeats on Saturday night. Carrie was a bit of a love-to-hate character at the time but the other 3 were fab, plus genuinely fun characters like Stanford and Harry made it watchable. And as others have said, NO other show discussed and showed female sex and sexuality in such depth either before or since.

I disagree, Sex Education have and do it better, they are way more inclusive without trying to be hard to be woke just for the sake of it.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 04/08/2025 15:22

I was early 20s when it was big and everyone loved it. My colleague used to have SATC parties every week to watch new episodes. My SIL was obsessed. Emails would go around with links to take quizzes to see which character you relate to. Personally I couldn't see the attraction and felt a bit left out. The dialogue around sex was shocking and I get that was groundbreaking at the time. It's still a bit shocking even now, its not usual to hear women talk like that. However i couldn't stand any of the characters, I just had nothing in common with any of them. I guess they were supposed to be more caricatures of different personality types but I didn't relate to any of it and just couldn't get into it.

But SATC paved the way for Girls, and Girls paved the way for Sex Education. Just like Skins paved the way for Euphoria. There was nothing like SATC before SATC.

I don't know that show as well but I don't think SATC was originally 'woke' and I do think it's portrayal of female sex was groundbreaking at the time; certainly in the US.

Samantha and Miranda had the funniest scenes and showed the brilliance of their comedy skills:

Samantha
The guy with the tiny penis
The guy with the huge penis
The guy with the.. Bad tasting Cum 🤢

Miranda
The guy who wanted rimming
The guy who left the bathroom door open

Also Charlotte's guy with the abusive language when he Came and.. Face licker guy 😂😂

Yes I really liked it HTH.

missmushroom · 04/08/2025 15:41

I couldn't get in to it tbh i found it boring.
But i knew plenty that loved it.
Same goes for other programs and series.
Friends i hated it so boring so cringe yet others liked it.
I like die hard & bangkok dangerous others hate it.
Love the series the big bang theory my sister cant stand it but yet will watch sex and the city on repeat.

MargoLivebetter · 04/08/2025 15:42

I never liked it despite really wanting to. I was just turning 30 when it hit the small screen for the first time and I lived and worked in London and was so excited to see what my US counterparts were doing in NYC. I remember being so disappointed. They seemed to be having much less fun and spent far too much time focused on things and so much angst. The only one I felt I might remotely like in real life was Samantha!

I persisted to try and see if I could ever find anything to love, but I never really did. Some of the observations were amusing, the fashion was interesting and I enjoyed the buzz of NY, but the characters and their lives never really connected with me. The most recent series is dreadful.

What irritated me was the abortion fake-out story that so many shows did during that time. Miranda got pregnant, planned an abortion and then didn't go through with it. Why not just leave the abortion part out of it then? It felt so moralistic to see nearly all female characters in shows around that time change their mind. They only wrote these scenarios because the actresses of these characters happened to be pregnant at that time and they had to write in something dramatic to explain the character being pregnant and it was always a damn abortion fake-out.

Only Scandal actually had Olivia go through with it and it was revolutionary. Still is, considering the abortion rights women in the US have lost.

Carrie and Sammanths did discuss the fact they had both had abortion, s though
And I think it just showed that Miranda just changed her mind some women do.

WhiteNoiseBlur · 04/08/2025 15:46

Naah hard disagree, it’s so so good! Skip series one and go straight for the second - the first series is easily the worst (and the most dated of course). They stop talking directly to the camera from series 2 which helps!

I liked those two episodes at the time but find them really problematic now! Weird given it presented itself as so progressive.

I think their desparation for men and the nuttier stuff like circumcision haven't aged well, but honestly the gender/trans stuff is of a saner time.

I think it was calling the transwomen half woman half man, several times that shocked me. I don't think anyone on either side of the trans debate would find that acceptable now!

MBJ15 · 04/08/2025 15:49

I loved it and I’m sad and just like that is also ending!

Miranda also loved the British soap Jules and Mimi. Friggin loved her analysis of British class - he's from Brixton, and she's from Hampstead Heath. I'm not sure what that means exactly but it seems to be this great divide.
Makes me giggle just thinking of it!

I just wouldn't find it accurate really.
I just saw an episode where a guy rocks up who was skinwalking Samantha and she's horrified! No careful use of the "she" pronoun there.

Also recent at the time storyline, s had,had Steve having testicular cancer and Miranda having less than optimal fertility, so it's quite easy to see why she might have changed her mind about having an abortion, if her pregnancy with Brady was potentially the only chance she would get to be a mother.

DiggingHoles · 04/08/2025 15:53

x2boys · 04/08/2025 15:45

And I think it just showed that Miranda just changed her mind some women do.

Yeah, and Carrie regretted that she had needed one. She felt stupid that she had not been more careful. The entire episode had a very judgemental tone about it. Aden got angry that he knew and argued that Steve had a "right to know" and ran a whole men's rights spiel of "men can't catch a break". Carrie judged Sam for having more than one abortion. And since Samantha's story lines are always a bit ridiculous, it was clear was clear that women who have abortions got judged by the writers of the show.

It was especially funny how Charlotte lost her rag that Miranda planned an abortion when she was all "I choose my choice! I choose my choice!" a few episodes before. And yeah, I know that she struggled to get pregnant herself, but her reaction was really out of proportion and judgemental.

But she had never even thought about being a mother. It had literally never come up until that point, and all of a sudden she was all about being a mother and how this could be her last chance to do something she had never cared about.

It irritated me, not specifically that Sex and the City did it, but that almost all shows with significant female characters did this. It was always the same shit. Actress pregnant so he character would have a surprise pregnancy, immediately plan an abortions because there were not ready or never wanted children and literally at the appointment would change their mind. It was always the same.

I can see your point but some people do decide to continue with unplanned pregnancies even if they waiver over choices Miranda waa very organised and career minded, this storyline threw a curve ball at her.

It was just well-produced, easy on the eye fluff TV. Loved it in my early twenties, but it was never deep and meaningful: it was a fluffy chic treat for Friday night/weekend viewing! On a holiday in NYC, I even remember going to the Japanese department store that features in a couple of episodes, just for fun and to look at the makeup and pretend to be New York it-girls.

But it was hardly Dostoyevsky! Not sure why people think it should be, either — would you go to see The Devil Wears Prada and then complain that it isn’t Oppenheimer? There were always lots of annoying things about it, and about Carrie and so on; but it wasn’t meant as particularly serious, or realist, viewing. And when people complain about it not being up to date, well, the woke “progressive” aspects of AJLT haven’t exactly gone over particularly well. (Maybe, just maybe, the original series was actually not that bad in the way it presented gay and lesbian characters, compared to the heavy-handed gender ideology woo they’ve gone in for in AJLT.)

Edited to add that the films were absolutely awful, especially SATC2 which genuinely remains the worst film I have ever seen. I was stuck on a plane watching it and it was the only film working as the entertainment system was broken. FML 🤦‍♀️

Just because you dislike it doesn’t mean other people are pretending to like it.

I loved SATC even if I found some episodes really awkward and cringe at the time. And then of course some episodes have aged poorly.

I also actually rather like And Just Like That.

This echoes exactly what I feel. I loved it and also AJLT.

I certainly never felt the need to pretend to like SATC. If I WAS one to feel pressured to like or dislike something, I'd probably have felt pressure to hate Carrie (but I don't, I rather like her- and recognize she's imperfect) or hate AJLT (but I don't, it works for me, and I really enjoy watching it).
