Children Knocking and Running

Not really an AIBU, but not sure where to put it. There have been some children who have been knocking / ringing the bell and then scarpering. A house they are doing it to has a disabled lady who is finding it extremely upsetting. They have already been told off, yet still doing it. I appreciate that it's fairly standard hi-jinks for kids, but they are really pounding the door and it's causing some distress. It's been four times just today, extremely loudly. I did put a post on Facebook in the local group, but for some reason the admins declined it! I've added another, this time with some not terribly good photos of the culprits that we managed to grab. But if it's declined again, what should we do? Would the police do anything? It seems extreme, but kids can't really just be allowed to go around terrorising people. I am reluctantly considering a video doorbell, but they're a lot of money and it does seem wrong that we're being put in this position. And even if we get clear videos, I have no idea what to do with them anyway if I can't post them on FB.

Yanbu, we had this a while ago and it was really annoying. In our case, we managed to speak to a couple of the parents and the local school very helpfully spoke to kids in one of their assemblies. It stopped after that completely, but that won't be an option for you in the summer holidays. I doubt that the police would do anything tbh but might be worth a try. I sympathise.

I just turned up and asked them not to and they stopped.

OtherS · 03/08/2025 20:15

I imagine it will likely (hopefully) stop when they go back, but that's still a month. I did open the door on one of them, hand outstretched, and he looked shocked and then turned and ran. I didn't bother to say anything, but assumed he'd got the message. And they did stop for a week or so, but now they've apparently regained their 'courage'.

Second post has also been declined, I can't understand why?! Surely this is the exact sort of thing the local FB group is for? I'll maybe head to the police station tomorrow, see what they advise.

Lot of it about given that an identical thread was posted yesterday

OtherS · 03/08/2025 20:23

Thank you, didn't see the post - didn't think to check tbh, though I suppose 'tis the season! Reading through it now. Mine are definitely horrid little boys though so don't think it's the same lot.

Are you the disabled person you're referring to?

It's just a kid's game that has been played for centuries. Ignore it, the kids will get bored after a bit.

No, it's fuckimg harassment. I remember the calls from my terrified 98 year old grand mother who had dementia. She would be sobbing down then phone from fear.

Just called 101, lovely lady said it's definitely something they look into and I'll get a call back from local police. She did say they were getting a lot of calls at the moment, so finger's crossed they'll hunt the little buggers down... She also couldn't work out why the local group would have declined my posts, she agrees that is the sort of thing that would make sense to be published. Ah well, I look forward to hearing from the police officer. Think they're a pretty distinctive little group so hopefully it won't be too hard to find them. Thanks all for reassuring me I'm not overreacting!

Can you directly message the admins and ask why? You can see them in the group info.

It may be something simple like you've described them incorrectly or adding photos is against their rules. Or it wouldn't surprise me if one of the admins is the culprits parent.

I did, one messaged me "Hello, we wouldn't post this especially the photos, it really should be reported to the police". I did add another post before I saw it which didn't include any descriptions and just said it was happening where I was and if people also got it to call the police as it would be taken seriously. That was approved. Can maybe understand not allowing the photos, but does seem strange not to allow vague descriptions. I would've thought most parents would prefer to find out on FB than from the police rocking up, but maybe the latter is more appropriate.
