Sports Club Photo Sharing...

My kids are in a sports event that takes place in a public area. It's a wide area so impractical for parents to photograph their own children. In the past everyone has simply shared photos on WhatsApp and usually most people get a decent shot of their own child.

These days the club is cloak and dagger about photos due to various bits of legislation that require opt ins for photo sharing.

AIBU to think they could legally give the parents each other's contact details allow us to set up our own WhatsApp group outside of the club and legally share photos of each other's kids to our hearts content?

If (in the future) there were a child who's image couldn't be shared for safeguarding reasons we'd all be happy to keep our phones in our pockets but the last two years the people who failed to opt in did want photos, they just forgot to check the box. So two years in a row 200 parents don't have photos of their kids for no reason.

I did suggest to the organiser that she contact any parent who didn't check the box to make sure it was intentional but she felt it would put pressure on the parent.

I'd also suggested that children who actively wanted photos could wear (say) a green ribbon so photographers would know who to photo. (This was rejected because 1 or two children would stand out because of their lack of ribbon.)

How do other clubs manage this problem?
