Bloody NYT Connections and the woman who makes them up!
What absolute nonsense.

I have known it referred to as intimate congress!!

Lolamills · 02/08/2025 11:16

This made me chuckle because I’ve just completed this puzzle and was like “eh!!?? I’ve never heard of it called that before” 😆

MasterBeth · 02/08/2025 11:18

It's the New York Times. Frustrating as it can be (no, I didn't get "commerce", either), it's kind of up to them to use phrases and words from American culture.

OrigamiOwls · 02/08/2025 11:20

I did think the same about those answers!
Although having a spoiler alert, after the spoiler in the title, does kinda make it pointless 😂

JMSA · 02/08/2025 11:20

I’ve never heard of it, but then I’m not particularly au fait with Americanisms!

I understood congress but not commerce!

Cheepcheepcheep · 02/08/2025 11:21

I was 3/4 as I did recognise ‘congress’ (probably from some godawful romance novel - I used to get handmedowns from my auntie 😅)

Struck out though as I would never have guessed ‘commerce’. DH is livid 😆

Oh God, you’re absolutely right 😬😳

Yeah I thought commerce was a weird one

GlaikitWeeNyaff · 02/08/2025 11:26

I have heard congress, never commerce

JMSA · 02/08/2025 11:29

Makes it sound rather transactional!

Congress yes, commerce never.

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 02/08/2025 11:31

"Congress" at its root means any kind of meeting or interaction, and "commerce" similarly means dealings or interactions. I've definitely heard it called "congress" before; 'commerce' not so much - it does imply a mercenary attitude and possibly the selling of sex.

TaborlinTheGreat · 02/08/2025 11:32

Congress is a recognised (though a bit formal/literary andnot that commonly used) word for sexual intercourse. It's not an Americanism!

MCF86 · 02/08/2025 11:33

Same here, the first two was the first link I saw but assumed it was one of those false ones, struck out after getting the first two easily.

I have learnt something new today!

Hehe - I realised that this was the group and had intimate, congress and relations, but tried "cleave" first, thinking perhaps "cleave to each other". Commerce is very much a new one!

KrisAkabusi · 02/08/2025 11:55

Like others, Congress yes, commerce no.

vdbfamily · 02/08/2025 11:56

Congress quite well used but Commerce never. I am new to the link puzzle thing and managed that one okay but the day before could not do any of them!

DappledThings · 02/08/2025 11:58

Congress is used in nature documentaries

MsPulchritude · 02/08/2025 12:06

I don't mind when I don't get a connection/strand/mini, if it's down to some stupid Americism. I only mind when it's my own incompetence!

ThePoshUns · 02/08/2025 12:26

lol I failed completely at connections today. I have never heard the term commerce used for sex! Congress I have but it is still unusual.

DustyMaiden · 02/08/2025 12:28

helphelpimbeingrepressed · 02/08/2025 15:56
