I have known it referred to as intimate congress!!

This made me chuckle because I’ve just completed this puzzle and was like “eh!!?? I’ve never heard of it called that before” 😆

It's the New York Times. Frustrating as it can be (no, I didn't get "commerce", either), it's kind of up to them to use phrases and words from American culture.

I did think the same about those answers!
Although having a spoiler alert, after the spoiler in the title, does kinda make it pointless 😂

I understood congress but not commerce!

I was 3/4 as I did recognise ‘congress’ (probably from some godawful romance novel - I used to get handmedowns from my auntie 😅)

Struck out though as I would never have guessed ‘commerce’. DH is livid 😆

"Congress" at its root means any kind of meeting or interaction, and "commerce" similarly means dealings or interactions. I've definitely heard it called "congress" before; 'commerce' not so much - it does imply a mercenary attitude and possibly the selling of sex.

Congress is a recognised (though a bit formal/literary andnot that commonly used) word for sexual intercourse. It's not an Americanism!

Same here, the first two was the first link I saw but assumed it was one of those false ones, struck out after getting the first two easily.

Hehe - I realised that this was the group and had intimate, congress and relations, but tried "cleave" first, thinking perhaps "cleave to each other". Commerce is very much a new one!
