To feel embarrassed about walking around naked in gym changing rooms?

It isn’t because I dislike my body or anything but I do feel incredibly awkward about just stripping off and walking around. Is it upbringing?

I am quite envious of all the women who seem totally unbothered about doing this. If you’re trying to get changed without exposing everything, you’re definitely in the minority at my gym.

So I’m wondering how common it is for people to feel the way I do?!

Sorry. Just an observation...

I hate to break it to you, but I think you are catching post gym sweat from their ‘area’ rather than their response your undoubted hotness..

I think the people getting fully naked and walking around in front of OP aren't normal, they're pervs. OP has inadvertently been forced to participate in someone else's fetish. Nobody strips off and walks around nude, they very quickly get changed in one spot and try and do it discreetly. You might briefly see bits but if someone is full frontal wondering around a changing room then they're a freak who gets off on it.

I think you need to get out more.

XWKD · 02/08/2025 17:14

Some people are just shy about being naked in front of people. Others don't mind at all. I don't think it's just upbringing. You see differences within the same family.

DiscoBob · 02/08/2025 17:14

It goes against what we've been taught about our bodies and privacy to feel confident being nude in front of strangers.

It's also totally unnecessary. Surely all gyms have private showers? If they don't then I'd at least wear bottoms. And I'd be concerned a man could walk in.

I don't think it's about body confidence. But I do know I've had doctors or nurses pulling faces when they see me with my clothes off. So my body isn't really pleasing to others and it maybe does draw attention. So I wouldn't be getting naked at the gym.

MagpiePi · 02/08/2025 17:20

Meh.
We are all just skeletons in meat armour being driven by a lump of electrified goo.

And, everyone is naked under their clothes😱
…apart from Granny Weatherwax

CyanDreamer · 02/08/2025 17:28

I agree, it must be your gym. I am glad in mine no-one feels the need to parade around naked. No one would faint, but no one is interested.

I do like women-only changing rooms, don't get me wrong, but I still prefer civilised places where it would make no difference if men and women were together: because people use cubicles and are not stark naked in public!

Cover your arse Angela, no one wants to see that 😂

Absolutely. My mum used to flit around (bathroom to bedroom sort of thing) in the buff but I've never been comfortable with it and definitely not outside the home.

GiveDogBone · 02/08/2025 18:12

We have a gym at work and an overweight colleague seems to delight in walking round naked just to show everyone how unashamed she is of her physical condition. She spends more time walking naked round the changing rooms (oh, I accidentally left my makeup by the sink again), than she does on the gym floor.

And yes, everybody talks about her behind her back.

Sassybooklover · 02/08/2025 18:16

I'm not sure why anyone would be striping off naked and walking around, in a gym changing room????!!!!! Why would anyone need to do this??? I'm no prude, open minded, and don't believe the naked body is anything to be ashamed of. Bizarre behaviour!

I hope that’s because of the general nakedness and not her weight?
I don’t think there is any need to walk around naked but that’s whatever body type.

BlackCoffeeAndSugar · 02/08/2025 18:22

David Lloyd also. Yup lots of wandering about naked. Drying hair topples. Blow drying other areas. Doing make up in only pants. Regularly see these things. Not everyone's doing it but it's not unusual for me to see this either.

Unashamed of her physical condition? Everyone talking behind her back? What kind of place do you work in.
Why should your colleague be ashamed? My niece is confident naked, has been from a young very overweight DC. She'd shower after a match at 12/13 when she was chubby with pubes, fat or thin, she is body confident, now she's a gym addict losing 4 stone but her attitude has never changed.

Skybluepinky · 02/08/2025 18:26

No idea why anyone eoukd want to walk around naked in a gym, utter madness.

CyberStrider · 02/08/2025 18:28

A word of warning : I'd suggest never venturing to a Danish swimming pool if you're not comfortable being naked in front of other women.

YANBU. I feel weird about it too and don’t strip naked in front of other women either!

RoseAlone · 02/08/2025 18:35

Why on earth would you be stripping off and walking around in a gym?!! That's very weird behaviour.

DBD1975 · 02/08/2025 18:37

Was shocked when I went to the gym to see this.
In addition the women who towel dry themselves in full view, I find it very uncomfortable and also weird.
Fine with being discreet but it feels like some women are putting on a show!

Brefugee · 02/08/2025 18:38

gosh most of you had better never ever go to Germany.

LaughingCat · 02/08/2025 18:39

Yeah, been a member of a few gyms over the years and often seen the same, OP. My mum brought me up to think of it as completely normal (Dutch on the German border, if it means anything). They never spent hours parading around naked but they were comfortable enough with nudity to not try to hide themselves - that furtiveness just makes me think of school swimming lessons 😂. I’m equally at ease being naked in front of others in a changing area (and I don’t like trying to peel my clothes on while still damp from the shower - there’s a lot to be said for giving it a couple of minutes to air dry!).

I draw the line at my local council-run leisure centre though. They have the changing room with plate glass windows looking into the pool all the way down the side of it, opposite the viewing platform with all the seats. Virtually no cubicles. I’m comfortable in an enclosed environment to be naked for a reasonable amount of time but I’m definitely not an exhibitionist! I didn’t realise the first (and last) time I used the pool there until I went to go get changed after and all the cubicles were full.

Never went back again.

You must be very parochial. It’s very very normal in much of the world for women and men to be separated and within their spaces be naked at spas, saunas, changing rooms etc.

very normal countries. Not some whole nations of freakdom.

  • Korea
  • Japan
  • China
  • Russia
  • Bulgaria
  • Ukraine
  • Germany
  • Switzerland
  • Austria
Loads of other normal countries are comfortable with topless nudity like Croatia, Spain and all of Scandinavia

if anyone seems troubled it’s the Brits. Repressed and outraged

IShouldNotCoco · 01/08/2025 18:39

Well clearly I’m not alone. But at this gym (David Lloyd btw) for the 10 years I’ve been here, it has been this way.

I am not offended, I just feel so bemused by it.

You aren't and DL is the worst for this in my experience. I had a trainer come out of the shower and start talking to me whilst drying herself with one leg on the bench and everything on show, what is wrong with people, utterly hideous and utterly bizarre!

Erm…you’re the weird one. How do you go from perfectly normal nudity to ‘pervs with fetishes’? That’s a ridiculous over-reaction.

We work in a place where none of us want to see the rolls of fat belonging to a coworker we interact with all the time. Otherwise why don’t we just make clothing optional in the office???

And none of us are super models, we are just appropriately modest and wear towels when we walk round. We certainly don’t presume anyone else wants to see our naked bodies all the time.

CountryQueen · 01/08/2025 18:41

Totally off topic but “2ndry”?! What on earth am I seeing now

I thought that too 😅.

I've seen more foofoo than I'd ever imagined in gym changing rooms.
Legs on the bench whilst moisturising with no knickers on and hair drying naked.

I get naked but out on clothes straight after drying.

Livinlife2dafull · 02/08/2025 18:48

Personally I am the same as you. Sometimes women just don't care and that is fine if comfortable. Be discreet if you want. There is a woman in particular who sits in sauna with no top on and no towel . I don't know where to look or cannot understand why people need to see her breasts or why wearing a bikini top is a problem.
