To feel embarrassed about walking around naked in gym changing rooms?

It isn’t because I dislike my body or anything but I do feel incredibly awkward about just stripping off and walking around. Is it upbringing?

I am quite envious of all the women who seem totally unbothered about doing this. If you’re trying to get changed without exposing everything, you’re definitely in the minority at my gym.

So I’m wondering how common it is for people to feel the way I do?!

I'm sad you feel this way if it is lack of body confidence, but I know you are not alone, at least on these islands. A German sauna, be it women only, or mixed, would not be for you.

Germans are also obsessed with their own shit. Very happy not to be in that gang.

Comedycook · 01/08/2025 19:10

Never done it...never would

JLou08 · 01/08/2025 19:11

I've luckily never been in a changing room were women do this. There have been private cubicles in every changing room I've been in. I did visit one spa were changing rooms were very limited and there was a communal space, I still didn't see anyone walking around naked, they were dressing discreetly. Based on my experience I think it is normal to not be comfortable walking around naked.

Joiu · 01/08/2025 19:11

Why do you need to be naked don’t they have cubicle's?

No there are only two cubicles. The rest of the changing room is open plan.

I detest communal changing and will use a cubicle if possible. Otherwise, I'm a dab hand at getting charged under a towel. My local gym only has open changing and no curtains on the showers but it's close enough that I just walk home sweaty and shower there.

It's not a matter of confidence, I like privacy for changing. Here in Germany people are more relaxed about nudity but quite a few of my German friends do NOT want to undress in front of others either. You won't get me in a German sauna either.

When I lived in London years ago, they all paraded around in the nip the changing room at my gym. I never did, always kept my towel intact, even though I was young & beautiful back then…

Yes, when I lived in London it was very common for women to walk around naked in the changing rooms at the studios I frequented. I live in the States now and NO ONE does it here. They’ve at least got their knickers and bra on.

I don’t mind either way. I’ve always kept a towel on.

I think there are 4 open plan changing rooms in our changing rooms but although the rest is ‘open plan’ it’s all sort of cubed off with banks of lockers so there are loads of smaller sections.
I also often use family changing which is about 8 separate cubicles. I don’t tend to go during the times that’s busy.

This.
When a certain PE teacher was in, we were made to put our towels on a hook and queue naked for the shower.

Same here <shudder> such a traumatic memory.

No way would I parade around naked in a changing room.

Oasisagiger · 01/08/2025 19:37

It’s one thing getting changed without trying to cover up with a towel (as it can be awkward) and getting on with it as quick as possible, but it’s quite another ‘walking around’ naked. There is no need, just get your clothes on/off them be done with it. No need to wander about like an exhibitionist.

We know what naked bodies look like, after all we’ve all got them so we don’t need to see a strangers all and sundry.

Autumnflowers2 · 01/08/2025 19:38

I swim every day ,using the gym female only changing room ,with showers .
Absolutely no one walks around naked
Even in the communal changing area ,ladies keep towels on
I've been going for years and very rarely is anyone waking around half dressed

TeenToTwenties · 01/08/2025 19:38

No one walks around naked at my DLL.
There is no need.

Radiowaawaa · 01/08/2025 19:40

I’m in the don’t care about being naked or around other people being naked camp. I work out, shower, dry off and get dressed. I don’t want to wrestle with a towel, I just want to get on and get out.
Do whatever you are comfortable with.

Smartiepants79 · 01/08/2025 19:40

I’ve never seen anyone walking around naked in my gym changing area. Most people don’t use it for anything at all unless they need a wee. I can count on one hand 2 hands the amount of people I’ve ever seen even getting changed at all.

tillyandmilly · 01/08/2025 19:43

I always get changed in cubicles /toilets would not dream of parading around starkers front of strangers!

CyberStrider · 01/08/2025 19:44

The virgin active gym i used to go to had plenty of naked people but not doing what I would call swanning around. Just going to the locker, putting lotion on etc.

Early morning so lots of people going straight to work and seemed to have quite complicated regimes to get ready.

I've been to pools in Denmark (naked showers compulsory complete with washing instructions) so it doesn't really phase me.

lljkk · 01/08/2025 19:46

Nuddy walking is not unusual at my pool changing rooms. Surprises me, they are all British. We get young boys in there and gawky teen girls but no hesitation among the middle aged & older crowd seemingly to let bodies be seen.

PE classes for me in 1980s in California: you were very gross person if you didn't shower after PE so we all were nude in front of each other. Never felt like an issue. I can't remember any comments on other people's bodies. Always bemused by British people seemingly traumatised by nudity.

MagnificentBastard · 01/08/2025 19:48

I don’t ’walk around’ naked in the changing room, no one does. I do however, dress and undress as I do at home, ie I don’t try and do everything under a towel as I see some awkward looking women do.

PurplePantsofPower · 01/08/2025 19:48

I don't know why people do it but some are certainly more comfortable with being in the buff than others... Most people are quite modest in my gym but you get the odd one. There was someone recently who was fully nude for a good 10 mins, leg up on a bench doing a very thorough all over moisturising job 😭 to each their own but personally I'd have chosen a cubicle...

FancyCatSlave · 01/08/2025 19:49

I’m not currently a gym goer, but when I did I would be naked briefly but wouldn’t wander about either. I’d put knickers on before body lotion for example. But less bothered by boobs, I’ll still sunbathe topless if I feel like it so I’m ok with nipples out.
I’m late 40’s and a bit fat but also blessed with giving no shits. I still have pretty splendid boobs.

I have no desire to, but I could frequent a nudist beach comfortably if I had to. But I totally respect that other people absolutely couldn’t- and that’s absolutely ok. I pay no attention in changing rooms to what others do tbh. Unless it’s really weird, I watched someone fake tan all over once in absolute fascination at who could be arsed to do that at 7am.

Oh my God, we had one of these too! I kid you not that in the winter season she would lean with a hockey stick on her clit region and gently sway 🤯

DorothyWainwright · 01/08/2025 19:55

After 20 years at the gym I can count on one hand the number of naked people I've seen. Everyone changes privately or goes home to change.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/08/2025 20:00

So don’t. 🤷‍♀️

I’m at the gym a lot. Some people are all out naked while they’re getting dried/changing. Some in a halfway house, half under a towel. Some in the couple of changing cubicles. All good. Nobody is looking. Nobody cares. Nobody is parading.

Apart from the “envious” ones, judging of course.

FlySwimmer · 01/08/2025 20:09

One of the swimming pools I use regularly has SO many women who walk around naked in the open-plan changing rooms! They’re a group of older women (I’m talking 75+ I’d say), who all clearly know each other, and they all come to swim at the same time. Then afterwards, they’ll shower naked (in the open showers) and dry off very slowly, chatting away, with plenty of full nudity. It’s quite something to see this group of women gabbing away, completely naked, taking their time to dry off and get dressed. From what I’ve overheard most of them come every day to swim, it’s just part of their routine, and they clearly dgaf about nudity. It’s funny while also strangely empowering, ha: I hope I’m like that when I’m older!

Everyone else tends to be wrapped in their towel and getting on with it, myself included, with occasional brief nudity as you pull clothes on.

It’s not like this at any other pool I swim at, or at my gym.

There is no need to walk around naked in the gym changing room and almost nobody does ime. Everyone gets changed fairly discreetly and wraps a towel around themselves if they need to cross the room to retrieve a forgotten item from a locker or whatever.

This.
