Boyfriend never seems grateful or says thank you

Been together about a year and he lives with me. All is fine except he never says thank you. If I hand him his dinner I’ve cooked, or I buy him a gift, he just takes it. He might say ooh this looks nice regarding the meal, but am I wrong to want a simple thank you?! To me, it’s second nature to say thank you when given something, no matter how long you’ve been together.
we were in a shoe shop the other day and the assistant handed him a shoe horn and he just took it. I know thats a terrible example hahah.
He’s been like this from day one I must add.

Why, if you’ve noticed from day one and it bothers you are you still together, let alone living with him?

Shoxfordian · 01/08/2025 14:51

He has no manners. Why are you dating someone who doesn't even know the basics?

Satonatrain · 01/08/2025 14:52

My ex was like this it used to infuriate me.

Its basic manners to say “thank you”

Have you asked him why he doesn’t say it?

outerspacepotato · 01/08/2025 14:55

Your boyfriend's an ungrateful entitled clod.

You're okay with that or you wouldn't be living with him and cooking for him and giving him gifts that don't even get a thank you.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 01/08/2025 14:58

Before everybody shouts LTB have you spoken to him about it.

If its a learned thing from his upbringing it may be that he needs to just learn to say thank you. The fact that he has shown appreciation for something shows that he may not be a complete arse.

If you haven't already speak to him and give him a chance. The simplest things in life are only simple if you've been taught them

Clod 😆 🤣

Is he ND? Not picking up on social cues? Or has he just been dragged up by uncouth parents? I'd find myself prompting him like a toddler..."What do we say? Thank you!!"

DirtyBird · 01/08/2025 15:43

My ex was like this too. One of the reasons he's an ex.

Clod 😆 🤣

Clod: stupid person; blockhead; dolt. Synonyms: dunce, oaf, lout, yokel, boor something of lesser dignity or value, as the body as contrasted with the soul.

Sorry going on a tangent here, but there really are some criminally underused insults in the English language! 😅

Icanttakethisanymore · 01/08/2025 15:45

I have small children (who I am constantly reminding to say please and thank you) so I don't think I would be able to stop myself from adding "please" and "thank you" whenever he missed it off. Maybe try that and see what he says? 😂

Icanttakethisanymore · 01/08/2025 15:47

My Mum doesn't let go of whatever it is she is passing to my toddler until he says "Thank you" - you could also try that!

Please can I add ‘oik’ to that list?
