I bought a smoothing bodysuit to wear under a clingy dress yesterday. Tried it on in the changing rooms and it fits fine. Had it on last night for about 6 hours and it was so incredibly painful by the time I got home. Just woken up and I still have red marks from where it was digging in at the top of the cups. I'll never be able to wear it again - do you think m&s would allow a refund? I had some new shoes I wore for a night out that gave me awful blisters and I was offered a full refund from a different retailer for them so it's not unheard of for shops to accept returns for items that are so poorly designed they cause pain to wear them.

I absolutely would contact them regarding the design of the product and point out that this design is faulty, has caused pain etc.

How are they to know if they don't get any feedback?

I'd expect shapewear to be tightly fitting, I would not expect it to have plastic parts that cut in/dig in and leave marks that last many hours!

This week, I have objected to Boxt pissing me about (took four appointments, three cancellations by them/their contractor, to install) and got £150 back..

I am also complaining to the bed manufacturer that despite a 10 year guarantee, part of my bed frame has failed, and I've had to get it welded back together - I fully expect a partial refund from them too - their product was not fit for purpose, I have had to sleep on the floor for three nights and find a welder to fix it.

I hope that these complaints don't simply get me a bit of money back, but that they inform the companies involved so that they can do better in future!

Yeah I understand that too. I guess that's why I emailed them first - IF they agree it's something we'd have to figure out. I never imagined they'd resell it to be honest given that it's been worn so I guess by return what I really mean is refund/credit note.

But to get a refund or credit note you do usually have to return the item which someone would have to deal with at the other end. You don’t get a refund and get to keep the item.

Blingismything · 31/07/2025 19:23

That is the whole idea of body shaping underwear, they are renowned for being uncomfortable as they move/push/squeeze/redistribute parts of your body/fat. Garments of torture. So on that basis I’d say no to taking it back for a refund.

Sundaybananas · 31/07/2025 20:03

I think half the people on the thread must have misread the OP and thinks she means “sneak it back to the retailer by pretending I haven’t worn it and just don’t like it”.

She’s being completely upfront that she has worn it. She has contacted them by email to query whether it was a design fault. I would assume if asked to send it back to them she’ll be washing it, and it would be sent back to a specific department to deal with it and not to the general returns address.

What do you mean I can't return shoes because they have me blisters? I did" return shoes because they gave me a blister - I bought them online, wore them around the house for a bit and they were fine. Wore them for an evening and got bad blisters, sent a nice email to the retailer explaining, they were very apologetic and gave a refund immediately so I'm not sure what you mean by "you can't".

You were very fortunate then

Fortunate or entitled CF?

That’s made me feel sick. It’s revolting.

This is such an exaggerated reaction! Are you for real? 😂

autienotnaughty · 01/08/2025 07:04

I returned school shoes that fell apart after 3 weeks. The assistant tried to argue they weren’t really meant for walking in???

id try you have nothing to lose. I bought a pair of expensive slippers as a treat and they were awful. I wore them for a few hours then returned them.

Zanatdy · 01/08/2025 07:08

I wouldn’t try and return used underwear no. Also most shoes give blisters at first, you just wear plasters and break them in. Guess everyone is different but i’d be mega embarrassed to even attempt a refund on either of these things.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 01/08/2025 07:12

Bonkers comments about the shoes, I've returned shoes a few times which were uncomfortable/gave me blisters....and no, you can't tell just by trying them on. Only last week I returned a pair of walking boots after a 6 hour hike as they cut my feet to bits and were so uncomfortable, despite me breaking them in first and wearing all the correct socks, preventative padded heel things etc. Was honest, told them why I was returning and got full refunds.

londongirl12 · 01/08/2025 07:15

What on earth do you expect them to do with it?? They can’t sell it again after your sweaty body has been inside.
lesson learnt, wear a dress that you don’t need shape wear for.

Thingyfanding · 31/07/2025 07:55

If you’ve still got the plastic sticky bit that goes in the gusset, I would stick it back in and take it back to the shop. You won’t get far by emailing them.
You can absolutely return it as the item is faulty and you’re probably not the only person returning these if they’re severely uncomfortable - it’s a design fault. Stand your ground. Worst case scenario, you will get a credit and can at least buy something else.

Ugh

Yes I am for real - just like all the other pp who are disgusted. Why pick my post from the numerous ones saying the same thing?

KnewYearKnewMe · 01/08/2025 09:16

I read Op as saying that the plastic parts where the detachable straps hook on are rough/not stitched with the right thread/cause sores.

imagine the roughness and sharpness of that scratching your skin 😮

that’s a design fault - not OP simply finding the bodysuit uncomfortable.

of course she could request a refund if she wants.

and can always stick it through a delicate wash before returning if she wants, too.

You understand, sometimes you return stuff so that:

  • the company can examine the fault with the product
  • you're clearly not scamming the company for a free product

Returns are not just so that the company can resell the returned item!

Yuck, trying to pass this garment off as unworn and saleable is disgusting. How would you like to buy a pair of knickers that someone else has worn and returned to the store?

UPDATE: I've been issued a voucher for the full price of this item and not been asked to return it after I sent photos in. I'd washed it on a delicate wash and the underwire came out and threading came loose.

Yeah right, how convenient. Sounds to me like you purposefully broke it so you could claim a fault and get money back / voucher. If you buy underwear that’s not comfortable then you just chalk it up to experience. Such entitled behaviour.

No it doesn't, not one bit.

Well done OP on getting your refund, it wasn't fit for purpose
