I bought a smoothing bodysuit to wear under a clingy dress yesterday. Tried it on in the changing rooms and it fits fine. Had it on last night for about 6 hours and it was so incredibly painful by the time I got home. Just woken up and I still have red marks from where it was digging in at the top of the cups. I'll never be able to wear it again - do you think m&s would allow a refund? I had some new shoes I wore for a night out that gave me awful blisters and I was offered a full refund from a different retailer for them so it's not unheard of for shops to accept returns for items that are so poorly designed they cause pain to wear them.

I think if it has a design or manufacturing fault, then you should be able to return it.

I don’t quite understand those saying you shouldn’t return, just because the retailer can’t resell it. They shouldn’t be reselling something with a fault anyway.

Although I also don’t quite understand what you mean by there being plastic at the straps. Maybe a photo would help.

Yes I completely agree - it's none of my business whether they resell or not.

It's a plastic loop where the strap attaches to the cup on each side as the strap can be removed.

No you got the size wrong.

StJamesInfirmary · 31/07/2025 10:43

Gosh maybe if more people were prepared to complain/ask for refunds, standards would actually get better. I've found quality getting worse and worse even for high end oitlets.

Sorry PP but your behaviour is gross.🤮 Gosh there really are some dirty, entitled people out there!

That’s made me feel sick. It’s revolting.

Smallchangebigstep · 31/07/2025 10:52

Well buying an item to wear on a specific occasion. Wearing it for that occasion for SIX hours. And THEN deciding the next day to return it because it " doesn't fit" is really a joke. Especially when it's an intimate item that has been in close contact with the wearers body parts.

I don't often have much sympathy with retailers but lot of people do seem to treat them as a free clothes hire service.

Check the returns policy.
I don’t accept certain items back that can’t go back to stock for hygiene or safety reasons unless they are actually faulty.
There should be a list of none returnable items in their policy.

Lightsug · 31/07/2025 11:10

You have no shame!

Kipperandarthur · 31/07/2025 11:33

In this case and with the item in question, sorry but it is really inappropriate to try and return this for a refund.

You have been wearing this shapewear for over 6 hours.
So it's not for you - fine. It's just how it is.

Sometimes things are badly designed. Sometimes you find out when you wear them. But returning this item is not on.

SinicalMe · 31/07/2025 11:42

@StJamesInfirmary just wash it and sell it on Vinted/Ebay. That’s what most people with morals would do. Sell it as a used item not BNWT.

Rainydayinlondon · 31/07/2025 12:44

I don’t think it’s on to wear ANY outfit, intimate or not, for “a few hours “ and then decide to return it.
It should be try on/look in mirror/decide/take off and return

Gosh, if fewer people were dishonest and returned unsalable items to retailers maybe their costs would go down and prices would too.

No. You tried it on.

You can't test 'wear' it.

They'll have to bin it and why should they?

Empress13 · 31/07/2025 13:54

Surely when you tried it on you could tell whether it would be comfortable. Underwear normally comes with a plastic insert covering in for hygienic purposes. I would imagine once that has been removed you cannot return

Maybe it's not the shapewear

Maybe it's your shape.

You tried it so your fault

Thingyfanding · 31/07/2025 07:55

If you’ve still got the plastic sticky bit that goes in the gusset, I would stick it back in and take it back to the shop. You won’t get far by emailing them.
You can absolutely return it as the item is faulty and you’re probably not the only person returning these if they’re severely uncomfortable - it’s a design fault. Stand your ground. Worst case scenario, you will get a credit and can at least buy something else.

Why is it faulty?

It doesn't fit the OP. Might be perfectly ok on someone else

Don't forget, all these items go through wearer trials so it's likely the OP rather than the garment

Coconutter24 · 31/07/2025 14:10

StJamesInfirmary · 31/07/2025 08:22

😂 haha I won't go that far! I'm so glad to hear a sympathetic voice though as I'm really surprised by how many people think it's just part and parcel of our clothes that sometimes they hurt. I just don't think that's acceptable at all.

I completely understand comments about the shop worker having to handle my worn underwear which is why I've emailed instead of taking the item back the shop I bought in from. I'd never ask someone to do that 🤢

But when you have to return the item even if it’s by post someone has to still touch the item of underwear you’ve worn for 6 hours

Coconutter24 · 31/07/2025 14:13

I recently ordered a dress from Guess online, (well I ordered 3) but one of them stunk of bo it was absolutely disgusting. The whole dress smelt ‘worn’ it’s was vile as soon as I opened the plastic packaging I could smell bo. Imagine if you return your underwear after being worn and someone else gets it as part of their online order 🤢

What's with the mocking? Have I offended you somehow?

I haven't been dishonest to you or to the retailer so I don't really understand your comment other than being nasty. Hope your anonymity makes you feel good about it.

I appreciate it's meant to be tight but it was where the straps attached to the cup it has hard plastic that has dug in so nothing to do with the tightness/smoothing of it.

Would that not have been immediately evident on first trying on the item?

StJamesInfirmary · 31/07/2025 15:14

Yeah I understand that too. I guess that's why I emailed them first - IF they agree it's something we'd have to figure out. I never imagined they'd resell it to be honest given that it's been worn so I guess by return what I really mean is refund/credit note.

I realised after all the talk of reattaching the plastic sticker previously that the bodysuit I bought didn't have one actually!

Don't be daft, you've worn it and it doesn't fit you, though luck I'm afraid. And more fool whoever refunded you for the shoes.

Bananachimp · 31/07/2025 15:21

Returning used shape wear, yuk.

This is why I wash everything before wearing once I've tried on quickly.

Eloisee · 31/07/2025 15:41

from your username I guess you’re in Leeds. How about I pop into your local M & S, buy a shapewear item, wear it for 6 hours, deposit dead skin cells, sweat in it, leave my “DNA” where the plastic tag should have been then make sure you buy it? Or should the retailer take the hit because you didn’t check it properly for fit and comfort?
you’re 🤮 and win the award for CF.
