Expensive hens… why

our group of girls are early 30s in average jobs, some are mums. A hen has been planned for next year and it’s £340 each for 17 people in rural location for 2 nights with hot tub to include food (one of the girls will cook for all guests) booze and activities (games such as mr and Mrs and all low cost games like that). This is all within the accommodation - we aren’t leaving the apartment once. It looks like a lovely apartment though. This is all sharing rooms and even beds at times with others too

is this a rip off? I think it is considering it doesn’t include leaving the place at all. There is an option for 1 night at £240 but I still think that is a lot even taking inflation into consideration

we aren’t lawyers and doctors we are pretty average women

It sounds like the hen really wanted a weekend away and was trying to keep costs down. Getting a house for that many people can often be expensive.

I'm another who wishes this trend would die out. One evening is plenty. Less angst, less pressure, less organising.

Ponderingwindow · 31/07/2025 01:49

Sharing rooms and even beds does not count as nice accommodation to me. I would skip this.

Yes I clicked on this thinking it was going to be a conversation about fancy chickens and whether their eggs were better than bog standard bantams. 🤣

Personally I'm not a fan of these sort of hen dos OP, it would be my idea of hell, but some people really go for them.

Yep, me too! 🙋‍♀️

BreakingBroken · 31/07/2025 02:24

i really really wanted it to be about fancy chickens.

FullOfLemons · 31/07/2025 03:29

I do feel like I need to know more about the world of fancy chickens and fancy eggs.

AliceMcK · 31/07/2025 03:48

I thought you were going to say it was a 4 day overseas bash with a theme each day, matching outfits, expensive activities, fancy restaurants and that is just the overseas do, not the “home” one.

Hen and Stag dos have gotten crazy and ott, it’s a massive sense of entitlement from the bride and grooms. Saying that I don’t think the cost of this one is that bad with everything included, my gripes would be relying on one person to cook, do you know if they can and what your eating and to be super picky I’d be happier if I had a pool to enjoy. The 17 people wouldn’t bother me as long as I could escape and not be forced into “having fun”. Again, saying that I’d only pay and go for a close friend I’d much rather spend the money on my family otherwise.

PennyRest · 31/07/2025 04:01

I’m afraid I joined to be educated about chickens too. I want to know which kinds are considered fancy and if they really are overpriced. Is it a false economy to buy cheap chickens?
Hen dos though, no question, definitely too expensive. It’s such a weird tradition, it’s not like you can’t ever see your friends again after you get married or something.

DinoLil · 31/07/2025 04:19

🐔

DinoLil · 31/07/2025 04:21

That's crazy money.

For £250, I can get a coach trip, including ferry, for five days, four nights, half board to Liverpool with two excursions from the the IoW.

MummytoTM · 31/07/2025 04:52

Honesty I think that’s probably about right for the cost of hiring a large house for the weekend (plus things like the cleaning fee!) & covering food & drink for that many people too.

Also surely it’s standard that you have to share a room on a hen, I’m not sure you’d find a house with 17+ rooms.

Ive just organized a hen for my sister and honestly it’s such a thankless task as there is always someone moaning about something and the amount of work that goes into it is huge. The fact that they aren’t doing activities sounds to me like they are trying to be mindful of costs.

workingitout1234 · 31/07/2025 05:41

All the disappointmented poultry owners I do apologise 🤣🤣🤣

I think I’m gunna say no. I’ll be breastfeeding a 8 month old baby at the time too, and this rural venue is 2 hours from home for me plus I have a toddler who is 2.5 years old

Zanatdy · 31/07/2025 05:44

I think it sounds fun and isn’t too bad cost wise. If that’s not your thing, just say no. No doubt the accomodation is very expensive.

Meadowfinch · 31/07/2025 05:53

Two dinners out would cost £60 at the cheapest. Even if you took our own drink that would be another £15 each. Breakfasts & lunches, maybe £40. So you're looking at £110 per night for sharing a room.

It wouldn't be my choice

Welliesandtweed · 31/07/2025 05:54

I'd feel sick staying inside sitting around for a whole weekend.

Highlighta · 31/07/2025 06:04

I think I would rather eat expensive (in fact any) eggs than go to this do.

No chance I'm sharing a bed with some random person, cooped up (hur hur) all weekend, plus have to play stupid games.

And have to pay all that money for it.

Guavafish1 · 31/07/2025 06:14

I think it’s ok for a weekend away…. However it is dear still! Accommodation in standard place is about £100-120 per night Food would be £30 x 2and breakfast £10. No drinks included. So I think you’re probably paying for the venue. Must be very posh.

did you give you time to save? I mean if you can’t afford it say no.

PersephonePomegranate · 31/07/2025 06:16

There's such a sense of entitlement around weddings, it's ridiculous. I really can't stand all the tacky games, raucous 'fun' with a load of people you wouldn't choose to spend a weekend with. You have the perfect out, OP, use it!

BlueJuniper94 · 31/07/2025 06:18

Eestar · 30/07/2025 22:20

Bit disappointed. I thought this was going to be about chickens.

But TBH, I don't think that sounds like a crazy price for a full weekend in nice accommodation with food included.

Glad I wasn't the only one 😆

CarrieMoonbeams · 31/07/2025 06:19

Cluckycluck · 30/07/2025 23:17

Same! Truly disappointed that I now don't have an outlet to tell the tale of my journeys up and down the country collecting fancy, expensive hens.

Au contraire @Cluckycluck ... Please start a thread, with photos if possible, loads of us here would love to hear about them, as you can see ❤️

And @workingitout1234 , sorry, to get back to your question, whether that's a rip off or not I don't know, because a house that can take so many people is probably unusual and therefore in demand for just this type of occasion, but given what you've said, no I definitely wouldn't be going to that. I would hate to be "cooped up" (🐤) with so many people and not even having my own space to retreat to.

dottiedodah · 31/07/2025 06:24

MsPenguins I love your description of naughty hens eating all your plants! Anyway about the hen do.340 quid each seems a lot to me .but I'm out of touch with those things TBH. It sounds fun .but if you feel it's too expensive say maybe do 1 night or something. Are you friends with others going. What do they think

ChocolateBiscuitsandaCuppa · 31/07/2025 06:28

Also clicked on this for the chicken chat.

I pulled out of a very similar-sounding hen (though a bit more expensive as was three nights and we were due to leave the accommodation at one point for an evening out, and on Sunday morning for a 'bracing walk!'). Even thought I knew some of the other hens going, I am so, so glad I did.

At the wedding itself, three of them said they'd not enjoyed it in the slightest, and went out of a sense of duty and like they had no choice, which is madness. It's not just the money, it's the time and the travel.

I know you don't want to disappoint the bride, but honestly, which would you regret more? Pulling out and her likely getting over it (if she's a good friend), or sucking it up and resenting it?

TheCoralEagle · 31/07/2025 06:31

Sounds expensive to me for what it is.

I went on a girls holiday earlier this year and for £390 a head we went on a mini cruise, Southampton to Amsterdam for 3 nights (2 to a cabin, balcony) with P&O. And that was food included.

Didimum · 31/07/2025 06:36

How much is the accommodation by itself?
