Rude running man

I live in the countryside, but was in London last weekend with a friend. Half the pavement had been dug up, leaving a small sliter of pavement to walk down for about 20m. My friend and I were walking down this slither of pavement, she was slightly behind me (as it wasn't wide enough for us to walk side by side). A man was running down the pavement and had to move onto the road, as he passed us he put his hands out and called me a "fucking idiot". Presumably because I wouldn't move out of his way and walk on the road, and he didn't want to wait for us to finish walking the narrower stretch (we were more than halfway down it).

Why the need to be so rude? Should we have walked in the road to make way for him because he was running? Should we have squeezed into the barriers because he was running and therefore had more right to the pavement than we did? Did he expect us to move because we are women and he is a man? Am I reading too much into this 😂

Genuinely don't quite understand why I was a "fucking idiot", and what I could have done to avoid being one tbh! Is he just a bit of a twat or is there an unwritten city rule about runners having right of way over narrow pavements which I'm unaware of!?

A 'fucking twat' would have tripped him up. He should be grateful you're not one

'Idiot' sorry, not 'twat'. I made him more mumsnetty.

Entitled twat. I hope you shouted “cunt’ at him
