Knock on someone’s door and ask who the visitor was

I have a strange one. I was walking the dog past a house on the street next to mine with my 18 year old daughter. A car was on the road outside and as we walked past all I heard was the occupants (sounded like kids and an adult shouting bitch. We carried on walking as I didn’t think it was directed at me as 1) I’ve lived here 13 years but only know a handful of people. 2) not upset anyone that I know of 3) not really been out at all for past 3 years due to daughters having a serious illness so none of us haven’t spoken to really anyone outside of family. The dog stopped and sniffed just past the car so we had to stop and a woman who I didn’t recognise jumped out drivers seat and started staring at us both.
we turned around and carried on walking but it’s really shook me up tbh. I haven’t a clue who it was or what we have done. We live in a gossipy area where most people have generations of family here etc.
so would I be unreasonable to ask house owner who the visitor was? I can’t get it out of my head and I’ve turned into a bit of a recluse due to my daughters health in the past few years so don’t even speak to neighbours.

Do not get involved.

Why bring trouble to your door?

whackamole666 · 29/07/2025 23:33

Why would you ask that?

What do you plan to do with the information? If they are silly enough to tell you?

Why would she ask that? To find out why she was randomly being called a bitch and stared at, presumably. What a strange reply.

You were shaken up by a woman staring at you. What would you do with the information if someone actually gave it to you? It doesn't seem like you would confront her.

If someone knocked on my door and asked who had been visiting me the chances that I would tell them are precisely zero. I would say that probably applies to most people.

Wanderdust · 29/07/2025 23:45

Unless I'm missing something, seems like the owners were directing the insult at their own visitor, the woman in the car? I'd avoid!

northernmum74 · 29/07/2025 23:50

They were definitely directing it at us. My daughter said the woman was pointing angrily at us too.
I don’t actually know what I would do with it but it’s very strange to have people randomly shouting names at you and then exiting the car just to stare at you.

You said intially you didn’t think they were pointing at you. She was probably worried the dog would pee on the car.

i think you’re blowing this out of proportion and if you and your Dd have been almost housebound you need to be very clear and firm that this isn’t a big deal and tmro, you get outside and do something for your sake and hers.

VaseofViolets · 29/07/2025 23:55

Just forget about it and move on. Seriously, nothing good will come from knocking on their door and asking.

Petc · 29/07/2025 23:58

I would try to forget about it and walk a different route. Probably just a misunderstanding or they thought you or daughter were someone else.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 30/07/2025 00:01

They probably thought you’d dog was pooing in front of their house or something or that you were stopping to be noisy at them. Regardless, do not go round there.

Empress13 · 30/07/2025 06:54

How do you know she was shouting at you ? You are only surmising. I reckon she thought your dog was going to poo by car when it stopped. Just forget about it and get on with your life no good will come from knocking on neighbours door

youalright · 30/07/2025 06:57

It sounds like the owner and visitor was arguing and because she was angry gave you that wtf you looking at stare

What a strange reply.

As if they would tell her.

She doesn't have any idea what the context was, who the words were directed to or what the situation was.

Gettingfitorbust · 30/07/2025 07:13

Is it possible that the occupants in the car were shouting at each other, and the woman jumped out to give herself some space, and was just staring in your direction?

IsItSnowing · 30/07/2025 07:30

I think you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sounds like they were arguing and thought you were watching/listening to them because you stopped by them with your dog.
I would stay out of it. I certainly wouldn’t go and ask them about it and risk stirring something up.
To be honest, if I’d been in that position I’d have moved my dog on quickly not hung around while he sniffed their car.
