To give up my Duolingo streak

outofofficeagain · 29/07/2025 15:04

I’m on 520 days but enough! I’m over it. I find myself doing a hurried match madness at 11:30 which I’m not sure is teaching me very much.

I burn through a lot of streak freezes.

Will I be sad if I just say sod it!

These streak things are beginning to own me! I feel I need to take back control.

It’s not worth the mental load. Give up the streak and concentrate on quality time when you can.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/07/2025 15:08

I gave it up because they kept banging on about streaks and sending emails with crying emoji. I wasn't interested in that stuff. Occasionally I go back to it then their harassment forces me to give it up again.

outofofficeagain · 29/07/2025 15:09

Thank you. I feel bullied! And belligerent!

I am on a 1295 day streak and I tried to stop a couple of weeks ago but someone on my family and friends plan kept saving my streak for me and now I have been sucked back in...the struggle is real!

Boobyslims · 29/07/2025 15:21

Oh god the Duolingo streak! I was only thinking about it yesterday. The stress of it!!!

SlashBeef · 29/07/2025 15:22

I gave up. It was stressing me out and I was doing exactly the same as you with panicked match madness.

stayathomer · 29/07/2025 15:22

This is how I feel about mn when I put it on in the mornings 😅 Whatever you choose I applaud you op!!!

Yazoop · 29/07/2025 15:25

I feel similar… I’m not sure I’ve even learned much French to be honest! Need strength to break the chain!

Confabulations · 29/07/2025 15:25

I am on over 2000 and know I need to let it go. I am not learning anything further at this point after completing the full course twice, then skipping past most of it on a third run through. I need to find a better learning method.

Morningsleepin · 29/07/2025 15:25

But whatever you learnt, you have learnt. Though it is probably time to find a real life teacher

TFMinx · 29/07/2025 15:29

I’m on 1565 and last night I accidentally used a freeze. I don’t feel I’m learning anything now as I’m only doing five minutes or so a day; part of me thinks I should just give up, but the other part of me would be annoyed at having put so many days into it. Definitely not getting much out of it anymore though

DefinitelyNotMaybe · 29/07/2025 15:30

Fuck the green tyrant! (But maybe double lock your door at night for a while)

outofofficeagain · 29/07/2025 15:31

I do also have proper lessons, so it really is just a streak for the sake of it.

but probably need a ‘conscious uncoupling’ rather than just forgetting too many times.

I'm on 2191. I've kept it going since I had to leave my language class. 😁

Whiningatwine · 29/07/2025 15:33

Give it up. It isnt a proper streak if you've used streak freezes, so what's the point.

tinydynamine · 29/07/2025 15:35

I gave it up and booked myself onto a proper course. Duolingo is boring and repetitive.

IMissSparkling · 29/07/2025 15:37

I'm on 1900+ days. Not planning on stopping until I have finished the course. It's just a game, if I can do Wordle every day I can do Duolingo!

NuffSaidSam · 29/07/2025 15:42

Give it up if you're not getting anything from it. It doesn't even count if you're using streak freezes!

I'm much newer to the Duolingo cult, but at the moment (just over a year) I enjoy the nagging/borderline threatening reminders. I've never stuck at anything else as long as I've done this.

FigTreeInEurope · 29/07/2025 16:07

I think it teaches discipline. I've finished my Duolingo Italian course today, with an 801 day streak. I don't think finding the time to do a five minute lesson is hard, it just takes the smallest amount of discipline. I've realized that discipline is more important in many pursuits than intelligence, or skill. Simply staying the course gets you to your goals.

Tinytigertail · 29/07/2025 16:25

My people! I'm on a 2000+ streak and want to let it crash and burn. It has warped my priorities from wanting to learn a language to just hurriedly trying to maintain my streak. I decided a couple of weeks ago that enough was enough and they just keep giving me streak freezes.

okydokethen · 29/07/2025 16:28

Nooo it’s such a long streak and my DD tells me (as she furiously learns mandarin at 11pm) you learn more before bed!?

Clementina49er · 29/07/2025 16:58

Another addict here : 1237 days, 149 weeks in the diamond league.... it's hard to quit.
At the moment I am working on Swedish, Greek and Hungarian.... I figure it keeps Alzheimer's at bay......

terracelane23 · 29/07/2025 17:07

I’ve marked their emails as spam now as they annoyed me.

No3392 · 29/07/2025 17:10

I let go of mine after 1000, I still can't speak a sentence of Italian and the green owl caused me stress.

I feel a lot lighter.

Viviennemary · 29/07/2025 17:11

I gave up too. I'm not being nagged to death by a robot.
