To think the RNLI are 100% in the right

I've just seen this story on the BBC news homepage where the RNLI are being accused of acting as a taxi service for migrants trying to enter the UK on small boats from Europe.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dejyg4l37o

The organisation and volunteers quite rightly have responded to say they make no apologies for saving lives at sea and that their work has no political motivation.

Damn straight - one of the volunteers further down the article explains the profound impact he feels of encountering people struggling in our waters.

It makes me wonder what critics of the service expect them to do - just sail away, leaving the people to die? Pick them up and cross the channel to dump them back 'where they came from'?

What is wrong with them? Where is their compassion? Regardless of your thoughts on immigration, this is so cold and inhuman....

Of course I understand that.

But if the journey is more perilous than sticking around then how dangerous can sticking around really be?

Pretty dangerous. This feels like privilege talking.

Funeraltango · 31/07/2025 21:03

Also they’re presumably also risking rape by sticking around. War zones aren’t exactly safe for women and kids.

Maybe they’ve left the war xpzinr and are refugees in a neighbouring country. Then their strongest relatives set off to find a better solution

I’ve worked with asylum seekers and refugees. I don’t know if there’s an asylum hotel near me (why would I?) but I assume there is as we have hig( numbers of both asylum seekers and refugees in about a 5 min drive radius from me no tension. No tension. No tinderbox.
Why protest an asylum hotel? I don’t get it. Peiple have to live somewhere. They wouldn’t be in so many hotels if the Tories weren’t such utter fuck ups (or possibly hadn’t let the numbers build up deliberately, which seems more likely - populist politics. Stoke division)

Then I envy you if you remain unaffected, because it doesn't feel so peaceful in other areas. The town I grew up in saw race riots in the early 00s. I don't want to see that again. There has also been the grooming gangs scandal. Tensions have stayed high.
The area I saw the protest was Altrincham in Cheshire, which is a very middle class neighbourhood.

You come across like you are willing on this "Tinderbox" scenario. I live in a City and don't see any such thing. I am also visiting my parent and don't see anything arising like this outside a hotel.

Absolutely not. I do not want to see civil unrest. The protest was outside a hotel in Altrincham, Cheshire. There are others also.

Tensions have only stayed high with racists. Most protests are bussed in as far as I can see.

Starmer has made a new deal with France.

Starmer and co also hailed the 300m law in France as a ‘game changer’. 900 arrived today, so I guess we’ll see.

Yes, let’s see how many arrive in December.
You can say it’s weak to suggest it’s the weather now, but I bet when it drops in December you’ll be happy to say that’s the reason.

I don’t mind if you rely on the weather for Labour. If that’s all you and they have they won’t last.

Both sentences are untrue. It's not just racists who are upset about the rape gangs. Thats a horrible thing to say.
The protests have been started by local people. There may have been others (from the left and the right) bussed in after the fact, but they began local.
I think you could learn a thing or two if you visited areas like mine. Why do you think Reform are doing so well in the red wall?

I didn’t say anything about rape gangs. Though most are white, as it happens.
I know Altrinchsm a bit. I really doubt the locals started a protest that could be described as ‘a tinderbox’. Especially as that seems the phrase du jour with those causing trouble.

So when they go down in December will you be happy with people saying Labour have sorted the issue?
Not that it’s an issue anyway really. See my previous figures.

ThisShyPanda · 31/07/2025 21:40

Whiningatwine · 29/07/2025 09:49

The only issue I have with the RNLI doing this is that they are run without government funding and on donations from the public. I know they prefer this, but I do think when it comes to migrant crossings the government should pay the expenses of the rescue. I'm convinced that these migrants crossings are due to government failures in setting out a proper process and I don't think a charity should be funding sorting the mess out.

I work for a charity and charities are literally tasked with sorting governments messes out.

If you and others are citing the weather for the reason Labour are struggling with numbers in a couple more years then great.

I doubt anyone will be saying Labour has sorted the issue in December or any other month come to that.

I think you’re missing the problem for Labour. If they really are just relying on the seasonal change in numbers and no other change then it won’t work for them.

Ok, I can lead a horse to water, I cannot make it drink. As I said, I envy you being so far removed from what is reality for the majority. There a quite a few threads on MN rn if you would like to widen your understanding of how many people feel about immigration, and how it is now affecting their daily lives.

As for the rape gangs being mostly white, let's wait for the national inquiry to see if you're right. Baroness Casey has a different opinion, but of course you know best. Those of us with first hand experience must be lying.

Enjoy the rest of your evening. I'm out.

Julen7 · 31/07/2025 21:54

I think, as I have stated previously, that grown adults need to take responsibility for themselves. Not put themselves deliberately in peril and then expect everyone to spend a lot of time and resources saving them.
I’m out too this thread is draining.

What a load of nonsense.
I live in an area with lots of immigrants, via asylum and otherwise. No tension here. Pretty sure the majority could say the same (about tension anyway). I haven’t accused anyone of lying, but there’s no way a personal experience can reveal the whole picture. The crime statistics clearly show most child abuse is by white men.
