To think the RNLI are 100% in the right

I've just seen this story on the BBC news homepage where the RNLI are being accused of acting as a taxi service for migrants trying to enter the UK on small boats from Europe.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dejyg4l37o

The organisation and volunteers quite rightly have responded to say they make no apologies for saving lives at sea and that their work has no political motivation.

Damn straight - one of the volunteers further down the article explains the profound impact he feels of encountering people struggling in our waters.

It makes me wonder what critics of the service expect them to do - just sail away, leaving the people to die? Pick them up and cross the channel to dump them back 'where they came from'?

What is wrong with them? Where is their compassion? Regardless of your thoughts on immigration, this is so cold and inhuman....

Around 80% are men.

Common for them to bring their families later.

“Okay love - I know you’re in dire peril here in this country, and in terrible danger of being killed and raped, along with the kids. I think the best plan is if I fuck off to England on my own and send for you in about six months, okay?”

The people on the boats don’t need a passport pocket. They’ve already burnt all their documentation.

Or had it burnt by bombing. Or had it revoked by an authoritarian government. Or didn’t have a passport at the point everything went south.

But you were talking about boats I thought. You said the last time you checked it wasn’t just single men on the boats. Not sure when you last checked but in 2024 78% were adult males.

Funeraltango · 31/07/2025 20:24

There are two possibilities here. Either these men have left their families behind in terrible danger, in which case they are contemptible cowards

OR

There is no danger, in which case they are liars and conmen.

in either case my sympathy for them is pretty much zero.

So the most pressing problem this country is facing is not hordes of young blokes illegally entering the country and then being deposited en masse in small market towns in hotels right next to secondary schools. The most pressing problem facing this country is actually (checks notes) billionaires. Have I got that right?

Yes. Because the first of those is essentially nonsense, and the second is a real threat to our future prosperity.

No I dont think that the men come to here because they're upset about women's rights back home.

Why do you think the6 come? Because they think their country’s government and social landscape is tickety boo?

cardibach · 31/07/2025 20:27

Around 80% are men.

So 1 in 5 aren’t?

So more than 1 in 5 weren’t?

Nope. The answer has been provided on the thread. None so blind as them who will not see.

If the average boat has what? I genuinely don’t know. 30? Then 6 won’t be men.

It looks tickety boo in France, yes. According to Macron, it's our pull factors that lead these men to get in a dinghy. I agree with him.
And yes, however you massage the figures to suit your narrative, 80% are men.

TheNuthatch · 31/07/2025 20:33

The figure reached 25,000 today, after almost 900 people crossed the channel yesterday. It's a new record for that figure to be reached this early in the year.

See what?

That we have a system which rewards criminal organisations with vast profits, risk and lack of security.

Yes 🤷‍♀️ Still overwhelmingly adult males.

For reasons explained ad infinitum.
Do you think we should take no refugees? Because we take very few as it is.

No I dont think that at all. What's your limit? We have received nearly 2000 in 8 days and the country is a tinderbox.

What is it you think I’m not seeing? Precisely. With figures, not prejudice.

Funeraltango · 31/07/2025 20:40

I’m waiting for one of you bleeding hearts to explain why these men have left their wives and children behind in mortal peril.

I keep hearing ‘country is a tinderbox’. Odd phrase. Not a normal expression. Why is everyone using it? Especially when it clearly isn’t.
It’s nit my job to decide limits. International governments need to work it out though, because global warming is about to make it a lot more difficult.

Been explained about a million times.
And to misquote Kathy Burke, I’d rather be a bleeding heart than an ignorant fucking twat.
