To think the RNLI are 100% in the right

I've just seen this story on the BBC news homepage where the RNLI are being accused of acting as a taxi service for migrants trying to enter the UK on small boats from Europe.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dejyg4l37o

The organisation and volunteers quite rightly have responded to say they make no apologies for saving lives at sea and that their work has no political motivation.

Damn straight - one of the volunteers further down the article explains the profound impact he feels of encountering people struggling in our waters.

It makes me wonder what critics of the service expect them to do - just sail away, leaving the people to die? Pick them up and cross the channel to dump them back 'where they came from'?

What is wrong with them? Where is their compassion? Regardless of your thoughts on immigration, this is so cold and inhuman....

Links that are quite clearly to the RNLI?
I wouldn’t click a link I didn’t recognise without checking, but that one is pretty self explanatory (and yes, I know scammers can copy close to the real address).

I wonder if the PP warns everyone about all the other links in posts, including the fancy ones?

No, we have to stop them drowning and then assess their claim.
Where do you get the idea that a majority of people not born in Britain want to ‘abuse our culture’? Who told you that. Do you understand that those people in the ME that you are scared of are the people refugees are running from? They don’t like them or their laws either.
I’m pretty sure women and the elderly will be a lot worse off if Farage gets to do the nonsense he claims he’ll do than if we let some people live in safety…

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 31/07/2025 09:40

so it’s ok for our own people to drown while the RNLI are off helping illegal immigrants???

Where did you get that idea?
Has that happened ever? I’m guessing no. And yes, occasionally it’s meant non RNLI boats helping out too, but that’s standard. Everyone at sea has that obligation.
Honestly, what a silly straw man.

Sly? Someone fleeing because their house has been bombed, say, or because they have to run unexpectedly due to being about to be arrested and tortured - those people shout be able to get a passport and other paperwork?
Just give it a moment’s thought and you’ll see the problems.

And they don't take their wife and kids with them? Why are these boats overwhelmingly full of young men? If it's so dangerous where they are, why do they leave their family behind when they flee?

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2025 09:12

Pure nonsense

Can you say what you mean with British culture?

Can you say what you mean with Japanese culture? Can you say what you mean with Moroccan culture? Can you say what you mean with Korean culture?

Are you seriously suggesting a) Britain has no traditional culture or b) we are somehow forbidden to have one?

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2025 09:50

For those not clicking links, it is very easy to google why refugees are more likely to be young men

Huh?

Can you at least explain what a traditional British culture is?

It’s bizarre isn’t it. We seem to be the only ones without a culture.

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2025 10:25

It's bizarre that people can't describe the British culture that is under threat

It's part of the exam when applying for IRL or citizenship.

You know exactly what I was saying, you just don't have a solid rebuttal.

But here you go:

High trust society
High emphasis on fairness
High emphasis on politeness and consideration for others. Apologising reflexively, for instance
Tendency towards modesty and self effacement in interpersonal interactions (contrast with, say, America
We queue rather than barge in
Strong support for rights for women
Emphasis on safeguarding for children
Respect for the rule of law and for authority
Humour, banter and irony, often self deprecating. Ability to laugh at oneself.
Scepticism and eccentricity
Support for the underdog
Pragmatism and resilience
A tendency towards an internal locus of control

Many of the national traits are dwindling. We're rapidly turning into a low trust society, especially in the cities.

You don't need to explain it. We all know the answer, except the pp it seems.

It’s the same question whenever someone talks about British culture, as if we uniquely don’t have one.

Phobiaphobic · 31/07/2025 10:33

I recommend Watching the English by Kate Fox as a primer for people unsure what might constitute British culture. Not sure if there's an equivalent for Scotland, Wales and NI, but much would apply.

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2025 10:33

And how is that under threat?

Phobiaphobic · 31/07/2025 10:35

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2025 10:33

By importing large numbers of people from very different cultures with very different social mores.

Importing?

Which cultures exactly and how are they treathening British culture?

suburburban · 31/07/2025 10:37

As a Nation we enjoy sports, theatre and music and have plenty of history

we have a Christian heritage that enshrines our laws

suburburban · 31/07/2025 10:38

Also I think we are honest and have a fair sense of play

TheNuthatch · 31/07/2025 10:38

Phobiaphobic · 31/07/2025 10:35

Yep.
The most common country of origin of the men arriving on boats is Eritrea. According to the government's own website, it is not safe for women to walk alone due to risk of physical and verbal abuse.
Would anyone be happy for their teenage daughter to walk the streets in the capital of Eritrea? Yet these same men are welcomed here by the pp.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/07/2025 10:40

Our ‘culture’ also includes the likes of the South Yorkshire police and Andrew Tate.

But yes, in general we have a lot of good things in our society.
Including support for the underdog, including ones who are drowning.

The RNLI is the epitome of the best of British culture.
