To think the RNLI are 100% in the right

SanFranBear · 29/07/2025 09:44

I've just seen this story on the BBC news homepage where the RNLI are being accused of acting as a taxi service for migrants trying to enter the UK on small boats from Europe.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dejyg4l37o

The organisation and volunteers quite rightly have responded to say they make no apologies for saving lives at sea and that their work has no political motivation.

Damn straight - one of the volunteers further down the article explains the profound impact he feels of encountering people struggling in our waters.

It makes me wonder what critics of the service expect them to do - just sail away, leaving the people to die? Pick them up and cross the channel to dump them back 'where they came from'?

What is wrong with them? Where is their compassion? Regardless of your thoughts on immigration, this is so cold and inhuman....

You are confused indeed

It's not illegal to claim asylum, it's also not illegal to reject an asylum claim.

No open border poliies or everyone can stay

Never said it was illegal … calm down.

Just checking? Can the voters for UANBU, please confirm that they are happy to host Mr XYZ. In their home pending their asylum review - as obviously, to not do so would be terrible for the poor souls, with no home and nowhere to go? Where does this end? Where do we draw a line for us & our children? I know I’ll be flamed, but - hey ho - a lot of us are too scared to comment this way. We are being silenced by media and virtue signallers.

The AIBU question is about the RNLI making no apologies for saving lives at sea

Feel free to comment if you think they should let people drown.

I’ve posted this before, but maybe not on this thread. Pending assessment asylum seekers have to be in government accommodation. After that, people do put the. Up in their homes. There’s a charity for that very purpose.
While you are here, could you confirm you are happy to just leave people to drown? Because that’s what this thread is actually about. If you vote that the OP is BU, you are saying you want people to be left to drown. Is that what you 8 tended to say?

None of the above were to rescue people who were there to rob or extort them. That's what this is: economic warfare. The RNLI is a cog in a machine which is stealing British resources.

It's equivalent to a burglar telling you they might kill themselves if you don't open your door to them.

In any case, all of this could be solved by simply having an acceptance rate of 0% and deporting all to a basic camp on overseas territory, with the guarantee that they'd never get to the UK.

Have the Royal Navy take over rescues in all "High risk" areas, board them, and then transport them to the overseas territory.

Don't be so silly. It's not warfare and a bunch of people faces in the process of inhaling seawater at a temperature of about 14-16 Celsius aren't about to knock you over the head in your flat to steal your Chihuahua and first born child for human sacrifice.

Normal people do not allow others to die on the offchance that they might not be nice people. Sociopaths might not, though. Sociopaths might also try to convince others that they should let them die because they've not got the balls to get in a small boat in a fucking big sea in atrocious weather to try and save a few lives, though.

My grandfather's life was saved by the same men who had been shooting at him and probably he at them. They hoiked him out of a pit underneath bits of his horse and unit, gave him first aid, took him to their field hospital, put a steel plate in his head and fed him until it was time to send him and thousands like him home again. If they can do that when there was actually a war going on, I'm pretty sure that the xenophobes, racists, islamophobes and keyboard warriors of the Home Counties can get over themselves and go back to complaining about school trips to mosques and the smell of onions and garlic cooking, rather than advocating for people far braver than they will ever be to knowingly look and watch people drown on the offchance they might not like them very much.

Wasn't there someone who raised funds for an entire lifeboat off the back of one of Farage's previous attempts to demonise the RNLI? I believe he planned to call it The Flying Farage, which would be absolutely brilliant.

Ha ha brilliant! I would probably have gone with the ‘Up yours, Farage’!

All the more reason to set the asylum acceptance rate at 0 and move everyone to a British overseas territory to be processed in a basic camp. Let them know that they'd be wasting their money and risking their lives in an attempt that would be entirely futile.

Human beings respond to incentives and disincentives: don't build it and they will not come.

Those fleeing for their lives will still chance it.

I would.

JHound · 30/07/2025 21:53

Accept 0%. Anyone who still attempts to get in illegally, process long away from the UK in an overseas camp with the knowledge that they'll never get here and will receive nothing.

Attempts would soon drop to zero.

Why do you need to “process” them if you aren’t accepting anybody seeking refuge.

No I am not. What a moronic suggestion. Nobody is suggesting everybody have randoms sleeping on their bedroom floor. I am happy for them yo be sheltered pending their claim and pay towards that.

This gets so tiresome to read doesn’t it. Any local Facebook page discussing anything from new houses, to signs of work at an abandoned business, a new hotel or development etc. you just get brainless idiots commenting “it’s for the boat people!”

It is! And they try and fit something in about boats on every single post even if completely unrelated. I’m sure a lot of bots start the replies and stupid smiley emojis to get the post trending in the algorithms.

When my Kurdish friend fled her native country, she didn't carry any documentation for fear she would be returned to her home country, where she had been imprisoned and tortured for 2 weeks.

I remember well the period of time when a lot of Kurdish people claimed asylum here. The bigots came out with all the same shit that they are coming out with now.

Oh, that old chestnut.

I want all children to be educated. That doesn't mean that I am morally obliged to set up a school in my front room.

I want elderly people who need care recieve it. That doesn't mean I am morally obliged to set up a residential care home in my dining room.

I want people who need cancer care recieve it. That doesn't mean I am morally obliged to set up a chemotherapy suite in my kitchen.

Those are all functions of the state, as is taking care of asylum seekers.

We are being silenced by media and virtue signallers

Well you're not being silenced now, are you?

Just checking, can the (minority) of voters for YABU confirm they are happy for people who try to cross the channel in a dinghy drown?

thats all this particular IABU is about. Not the reasons why they’re doing it, or why they shouldn’t or how to stop it. But that given the reality that they are there, about to drown, do you really expect the RNLI to refuse the callout from the coastguard?

Jeez thank you, someone said it!!

I despair every time I see nuance being missed on MN. Wanting control on immigration is not the same as thinking the RNLI should be letting people drown. FFS.

Sorry for going quiet - real life has an annoying habit of getting in the way.

Some 'interesting' opinions here. I didn't realise the 'taxi' comment was from some years ago as only saw it yesterday but from people's comments about how fundraisers are routinely still being shouted at, its still relevant.

I agree with those pp's saying this country is in trouble but it's not from this unstoppable wave of undocumented criminals and hotel-wreckers - it's from a complete and utterly lack of compassion and care. Anyone who can start a sentence with 'I don't want them to drown but...' is really lacking something fundamental.

I hope you’re right !

I don’t understand why there can’t be a law which states “if you arrive here illegally by boat, you automatically lose your right to apply for asylum”.

You can’t argue that you are fleeing for your life when you’ve crossed through many safe countries to get here. They come here because of the language, may have contacts here, and they get more benefits here than other countries. It’s a planned action, with money changing hands.

I think it’s really that simple. If you come here on an illegal boat, through the Chunnel or in a lorry, you lose your right to stay and you’ll be deported within 30 days.

Why are other countries not explaining themselves or tying themselves up in knots over this?

Where though? They’ve got sly and arrive with no ID… where do you deport to? We don’t know where their country is?

I wouldn’t click a link I didn’t recognise without checking, but that one is pretty self explanatory (and yes, I know scammers can copy close to the real address).

Sly? Someone fleeing because their house has been bombed, say, or because they have to run unexpectedly due to being about to be arrested and tortured - those people shout be able to get a passport and other paperwork?
Just give it a moment’s thought and you’ll see the problems.
