To ask if anyone works as a probation officer?

Or has worked, or was/is a probation services officer.

I'm currently an AO (Administrative Officer) in the Civil Service, and applying for the trainee role which pays an AO salary, once qualified will pay a respectable salary and will have a qualification from it.

Just wondering what the role itself is like first hand, I've read various accounts of it. I'd never work as a prison officer and hoping it's quite different from that.

Being a probation practitioner is very different from administration - or should be. You'll have a lot of organisational skills and knowledge of ICT system, which is valuable. You'll need empathy, a good heart, resilience and a strong stomach to work with the people on probation in a kind and fair manner. Additionally, analytical skills for you assessments, assertiveness and sound decision making and learn how to prioritise very rapidly and very often. It's a tough role, but if it's for you, there's nothing better.
