Driven mad by birds shitting all over my yard and washing line

Please help I am tortured by gulls and other birds shitting in my backyard every day multiple times a day! Every time I put a wash out I leave it only for as long as it takes for it to dry, perhaps an hour or two. Yet whenever I come back (and it’s usually on bed linen and towels) there’s big lumps of bird shit all over it plus also all over my yard. The yard is about 20 x 20 foot squared and at any given time there if I leave it if I don’t hose it down every day there will be up to 30 or 40 lumps of bird shit scattered all around my yard. I actually have to pick my way across the little lumps of it when I go to hang clothes out. I’ve just finished hosing it down my yard and hour ago and there’s already another three piles of bird shit appeared yard and I am just washing a double duvet cover and a fitted sheet for the third time today because every time I’ve put it out a piece of shit has appeared on it!

This is driving me mad and I don’t think it happens in my neighbours backyard. Why are they picking my yard? Can anyone suggest deterrents??

Can you hang a streamer on a fence/wall. Or place a fake large bird somewhere.

AllHoityToity · 28/07/2025 22:11

This sounds like a nightmare.

I have stopped pigeons from standing on the fence between my garden and the neighbours with tinsel. Apparently it confuses them ans puts them off landing. I just drawing pinned it up. I imagine other shiny things would work too.

How about one of these?

AnotherEmma · 28/07/2025 22:13

Get a cat.

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 28/07/2025 23:51

I hosed 2 frisky feathered fuckers off my fence. Only took 2 blasts and they don't come further down than a tree on the opposite side of the garden now!!

AliceMcK · 28/07/2025 23:59

Definitely big fake bird of prey, you can also get the shiny bird deterrents and hang them around.

A whirly gig with a pop up awning over it, just a cheap 'having a BBQ type' would do.

Or, if your neighbours are feeding the birds, some kind of bird scarer like a golden eagle screeching?

Shoemadlady · 29/07/2025 00:19

You can buy these solar powered high pitch things to keep cats away. Wonder if they’d work for birds too? They may avoid flying anywhere near your garden if they don’t like the noise (can’t be heard by humans)

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/07/2025 06:22

Have you tried reasoning with them?

Seriously, though, a fake owl often does the trick.

Catapult, doesn’t kill then but keeps the buggers away, only thing that worked for us.

solando · 29/07/2025 06:34

Kids water gun.

Old CDs make good bird scarers!
