Would I be unreasonable to make my 12yo pay for her own phone contract?

DD12 has just smashed her second phone this year (both screens completely shattered - one in her blazer pocket, one fell off her bunk bed). She’s now demanding a new one.

I said she could have a basic model until she’s more responsible, but she insists all her friends have iPhones and says she’ll be bullied if she turns up with “some Nokia from the war”. Her exact words.

I told her she can have the iPhone - but only if she pays the £18/month contract herself from her own money. She gets £5/week pocket money for doing chores - loading dishwasher, helping with laundry, feeding the cat - and usually spends it all within days on bubble tea and rubbish from the corner shop.

DH thinks I’m being too hard on her and that I’m trying to teach her grown-up lessons too early. He said she’s still a kid and we should just get the phone and “deal with the responsibility bit later”.

For context - she’s also lost her school jumper twice this term and cracked a Nintendo Switch screen by sitting on it. She’s a lovely girl but honestly not the most careful.

I think if she wants something that expensive, it’s fair she contributes, even if it takes her months. We’re not refusing to get her any phone - she just doesn’t want the basic one.

AIBU to stand firm? Or should we just get the iPhone and hope she looks after this one?

Genuinely torn. Curious what others would do.

I got DSs second hand phone from Music Magpie after a recommendation on Money Saving Expert - it has been fine Music magpie

I don't get why anyone is spending a grand on a phone. What are you doing on them that you can't do on a cheaper one?

CeeJay81 · 21/02/2026 07:48

My nearly 12 year old got her first phone for her 11th birthday last year. A moto g. Recently broke it, she's happy to have my old basic Samsung phone(got a new one for xmas. Its nearly 4 years old). If she wants an iPhone she can wait till she has a job. Thats what her 16 year old brother did. Even then he got an old refurb one. Thankfully DDs friends dont have ridiculously expensive phones either, so she doesn't feel left out though. Id never spent more than £250 on a phone, i def wont spent more than that on a child

My Pixel cost about £1,200...that's about the same as all but the highest spec iPhone?

From a shop with big windows? Did they see you coming? Not all of them will cost that much.
You can get them much cheaper or even £100 refurbished.
My Samsung cost £120 new. Does that mean all Samsungs cost £120?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 21/02/2026 08:47

Unless you treat it as a birthday Christmas present then it’s a refurbed phone. She needs to be more careful with it.

Barnsleybonuz · 21/02/2026 08:58

Why can’t you just get the screen fixed and make her contribute to that? I wouldn’t be buying any phones before repairing the current one

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 21/02/2026 09:01

Demanding would get her absolutely nowhere with me.

RhaenysRocks · 21/02/2026 09:06

Another vote for Android CEX. All mine and my kids phones are from there. They do good warranties and the £10 screen protector is very good.

Why resurrect a thread from last July?

snowymarbles · 21/02/2026 09:15

My daughter has had an old model iPhone since her first phone. Started with a 6, went to an 11 in y7 and now has her sisters hand me down 13 at 14.

a case and screen protector are non negotiable. Up until the last year or so I have also insisted on a chunky silicon case nor a flimsy one. Despite being adhd and very careless she has not smashed a phone.

My DD11 has a refurbished Pixel 6a. It cost me about £130 and it's a lovely little phone, perfect for DD and what she needs it for.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 21/02/2026 09:31

Ypur dh is wrong.
Actions have consequences

You are doing her zero life skill favours letting her carelessly break a phone get her an iPhone replacement.

Ariela · 21/02/2026 10:28

Screen replacement is much cheaper than new phone - why do you not do that and get her to pay that back to you monthly, by reducing her pocket money.
I'd also make sure you have a decent screen protector and cover (mine is Otterbox, never broken a smart phone and I drop it heaps)

Runnersandtoms · 21/02/2026 10:39

My kids have £100-£200 Samsung A15 or A56 with decent screen protectors and tough cases. They're 15, 17 and 19. If they wanted an expensive phone they'd have to buy it themselves from money they've earned.

Parents are completely mad if they're spending thousands on a phone for a kid, especially if not putting it in protective case/screen protector.

Clearinguptheclutter · 21/02/2026 10:44

She pays for a screen repair herself

I’m 😱 at the idea any parent would buy a 12 year old a new iPhone. My kids get our cast offs when we upgrade. And they know that they would be expected to pay for a replacement or repair if they didn’t look after it.

AutumnAllTheWay · 21/02/2026 10:51

Tell her she needs to pay half, and if this ine gets damaged, she has to pay all of the new one

Skybluepinky · 21/02/2026 10:51

Sounds like she broke it because her friends have new swanky phones and thought you/partner would buy her the same.

Myskyscolour · 21/02/2026 13:19

The rule in our house for anything lost/broken due to carelessness is that the 1st we replace it, then DC have to contribute.
Last month DD(11) lost her hairband at school, second time in a week, she didn’t say anything and just bought a new one on her way home from school, I only knew because of the payment notification on my phone. And I’m pretty sure she will now think twice about taking it off and not putting it straight into her bag.

Iloveeverycat · 21/02/2026 14:16

She doesn't need an iPhone there are lots of other smart phones out there.

Considering this happened around 7 months ago I would think they’ve probably got it sorted now

Peclet · 21/02/2026 14:28

Backmarket- totallly legit. Have bought all pit phones from there.
dd got a box fresh iPhone 15- it was dead stock from a shop.

I would go for an older model 12/13 and go for as new quality. Or just get the screen repaired.

Well dunno but I'm curious if firstly she got a new iPhone and secondly if she still has it or is it smashed again 🤣
