£15 for the GP
£20 for A&E
NHS routes to paid-for fast track treatment
Options to pay for nicer rooms

Everyone? Children, those on benefits, the elderly? Remember the WFA outcry!!
Just leaving the poor sods in the squeezed middle yet again.
Most of my clinic non attenders are over 65.

Exactly...as usual it all boils down to squeezing everything out of those in the middle

MissAmbrosia · 28/07/2025 19:36

Hmm. I live in Belgium and have to pay to see the GP (can claim most of it back) and healthcare is fantastic for outpatient and emergency treatment. You have to have ID to get access to this - which is something UK is sorely missing imho. But hospitalisation or long term treatment? You need decent employer cover for this. I have seen crowd funding at my dd's school for a lad with leukaemia. Be careful what you wish for.

The trouble is that there are too many people not paying taxes. Over half of the people in the UK are now net-recipients; either paying no income related taxes or paying less than they take out in services and benefits.

So the net contributors would then have to pay double to subsidise those paying nothing

OonaStubbs · 28/07/2025 19:37

No-one should be paying nothing for NHS services.

Toastandbutterand · 28/07/2025 19:39

Pessismistic · 28/07/2025 18:31

Are you serious? we are already paying out for these people now you expect us to pay for our appointments but the rest of them get a freeby. Definitely not your having a laugh.

I wondered when this would start.

The right want it, but the right don't want the poor to have it. I predict that within the week there will news stories about the type of people the right want demonised getting everything for free.

OonaStubbs · 28/07/2025 19:40

If nobody got it for free, "the right" wouldn't be able to demonise them. Everyone should have to pay their own way in life. People do not value that it which is handed to them. People value that which they have worked for.

Toastandbutterand · 28/07/2025 19:43

Not everyone can work.

EasternStandard · 28/07/2025 19:45

I can’t see it working if a large proportion are exempt. You’d more likely have people who don’t use the service paying for those who use it more frequently.

NorthXNorthWest · 28/07/2025 19:47

We don't need to pay for appointment. We need every person to keep on top of their health and fitness from childhood to retirement and beyond. There is waste on both sides.

Private healthcare only works if you have no pre existing conditions. It's another way of making the rich richer.

NorthXNorthWest · 28/07/2025 19:47

We pay for the NHS through our taxes. It is not free.

Kibble19 · 28/07/2025 19:47

Absolutely. Though I’d expect our income contributions to reflect that. Reduce those a bit as I’ll be paying for the service as/when I require it.

Wouldn’t give absolute exemption to anyone except children under 16 and the elderly with the latter being means tested.

The right what? I just don’t see how it’s fair to keep making the workers pay and the rest of them not our tax has been frozen for 5 years so the previous government could give out free money to businesses and furlough but it’s the employees who suffer. some people are struggling to survive just because we work doesn’t mean we have spare cash lying around for a dr appointment. A dentist is twice a year a dr could be every other week or month so people who can’t afford to pay suffer but those who already get enough stuff for free are alright jack. They get rent, money in the bank, reduced or free council tax, free prescription, free dentist, free glasses come on why?

user1491934176 · 28/07/2025 19:49

We do pay for it, it’s called National Insurance.

Kibble19 · 28/07/2025 19:51

Would also fine people for missed appointments and roll out a plan that things would not be covered such as the adverse effects of weight loss surgery/tattoos/hair transplants that’ve been done abroad. They could still be treated, but at a premium rate.

Which is why no-one should pay.

Otherwise it's just punishing poor people.

MaloryJones · 28/07/2025 19:57

Great for those who can afford it !

Adding a layer of bureaucracy, and shareholders on top has never made anything cheaper ever.

Most of these arguments are about restricting access to whoever the poster doesn't like at the time. This is not the way countries should decide to run public services.

Exactly well said.

Toastandbutterand · 28/07/2025 20:16

The people screaming about how unfair it is that they have to pay when others don't have just unquestioningly paid.

If the op introduced this rule she's made millions and left you blaming the poor, the stupid, the disabled and immigrants for being worse off.

Who do REALLY think you should be angry with?

OonaStubbs · 28/07/2025 20:24

The poor can pay the charge out of their benefits.

Yes, and apparently some posters think we should expect nothing in return. What mugs they are.

Memorable · 28/07/2025 15:52

Just wondering who will be collecting the money for missed appointments etc. That sounds potentially like a lot of admin. I can just envisage the arguments now and it’ll be the least paid who’ll take the brunt of patients ire as usual

PP have pointed out that many restaurants manage this with little fuss

Really a restaurant isn’t exactly as busy as the nhs is it. Some people just need to know it’s all or nothing.

The government who else.
