Not sure if this is a thing. Is Cornwall considered to be more upmarket than Devon and other seaside/coastal towns?

Or is that not the case and they are all much of a muchness with nice/not so nice parts?

Agreed. Brighton is so far from upmarket!

Up market in Cornwall would be St. Mawes and much of the Roseland Peninsula, Fowey, St. Ives, maybe some of Padstow and Rock.

Devon...Salcombe, Exmouth, Topsham.

Much of the Suffolk Coast.

Isle of Wight...Seaview, Bembridge. Some of the Yarmouth area.

That's interesting I live on the South Coast and I think the Isle of Wight is a hole.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 27/07/2025 20:59

Some of it is. But much like most places, not all of it.

I'm not sure why you've picked up on the IoW out of all the other counties I mentioned there tbh. There are plenty of hole like places in all of them.

North Norfolk is posh. Though I guess it’s the more central/western end of north Norfolk.

I went to Orford in Suffolk and that was posh.

parts of Cornwall are lovely. Places like St Austell or Cambourne would not be considered posh.

Brighton isn't an upmarket seaside resort! It's an expensive urban area that happens to be by the sea. (I like Brighton, btw.)

Helpmeplease2025 · 27/07/2025 21:12

Just joining into to laugh at the idea that Brighton is upmarket.

North Norfolk is de rigueur for the fanciest families at DC’s private school.

BarnOwlFlying · 27/07/2025 21:15

No. Cornwall is really deprived.

MyUmberSeal · 27/07/2025 21:16

I lived in Lowestoft for 6 months. Biggest dump of a coastal town going.

Ineedanewsofa · 27/07/2025 21:18

Rock = posh, like proper, old money posh. Newquay = not posh, super touristy but fun.
Brighton = absolute shithole with the world’s most expensive parking (been a year, still not over it!). Will never go back.

Worse than Blackpool? Ive never been to Lowestoft but I struggle to imagine anywhere worse than Blackpool 😆

Well perhaps on a par, although I’ve only been to Blackpool once and that was a hen weekend in 2005. Memories are sketchy 🤣

The Iow is the most local to me I suppose. I am sure there are some lovely parts, but there are very few opportunities and educational attainment is low.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 28/07/2025 07:23

That has little relevance to how certain areas fair as holiday destinations however...most tourists don't care about that. If they did they certainly wouldn't go to Cornwall given the levels of deprivation prevalent in some parts, but we all know they do.

Sw1989 · 28/07/2025 08:25

This. And North Norfolk!

Crikeyalmighty · 28/07/2025 14:43

@Ineedanewsofa I actually quite enjoy Brighton for a fun weekend but blimey I’m with you on the parking - we were staying at the leonardo too which has the car park and was still £60 or so for 2 days. !!!

We have long had family connections in what I suppose might be considered a more upmarket part of Cornwall these days, a very pretty fishing village on the Lizard peninsula. I remember when it was much, much smaller and a typical working village just with some tourism in the summer. (50s and 60s). It had one smallish but posh hotel and a few BnBs. It was popular with yacht-y types. My local rellies included a GP, and a fisherman!
These days it is noticeably more upmarket with many more yacht-y and red trousered types. Lots and lots more expensive holiday rentals and the small hotel is a little bigger, and posher.
But still terrible links to just about anywhere else. Car essential. Reckon there's still quite a bit of poverty, although it may not be visible. The fisherman in the family struggled to make a living at it and has moved away.

I’m amazed if Exmouth is considered upmarket , I thought it quite depressing, same with Teignmouth - in fact only places I went to that I liked in South Devon were Totnes, Brixham, Topsham ( now that’s upmarket) and Exeter itself which I quite like

Jackiepumpkinhead · 01/01/2026 18:16

I’ve been to St Ives (and the Scilly Isles whilst there), and even though it’s lovely, I wouldn’t rush back. It’s a nightmare to drive to. Have been to Devon a few times to visit family, maybe I’ve not been to the best parts but that seems overrated also. I love the Suffolk coast and parts of Norfolk. Wells next the Sea is beautiful. Have been to the IOW many times and I don’t find that particularly attractive.

Thepeopleversuswork · 01/01/2026 18:29

Depends where you are. St Ives, Padstow are Kensington on sea. Other parts very much not. Theres a lot of poverty in Cornwall, its very seasonal and reliant on tourism.
