AIBU to say men who believe this are sexist pricks

Men who refuse to watch the euro finals tomorrow as it’s women’s football - so what’s the point and refuse to watch, and say this in front of they wives and daughters are misogynistic pricks and their wives and daughters deserve so much better?

OP posts:

@Onleemoi my team has spent faaaaaaaar more time out of the premier league than in it. I’ve watched my team in the old fourth division, supported them through two consecutive relegations, the lot. Love the club.

I expect our two teams have met many times. I love the championship. So much more competitive than the prem, so predictable with the same old teams at the top every year.

Cant wait for the new season to start! Hope you have a good campaign (unless you’re West Brom 😉)

No, all good, we’re London based. I live in the midlands now though! Best of luck too! Wolves?

OonaStubbs · 28/07/2025 12:50

I support a League 2 mens team, they were in the national league for several seasons. I can't imagine just stopping supporting them because Liverpool or Arsenal are better.

And as stated before, people watch lightweight mens boxing, they don't just dismiss the lightweights because they'd get beaten by the heavyweights if they were put in the same ring together. How is that any different to womens football being fantastic in it's own right?

BitOutOfPractice · 28/07/2025 12:51

Yes @Onleemoi, Wolves is my team. Favourites for relegation apparently. I just can’t believe we are up there, holding on for so many seasons. I can’t smile wide enough personally. Glad to hear we haven’t got to fall out. Though I’m ashamed to say all the wolves groups on Facebook have got their fair share of these sexist arseholes - I suspect they all have.

Onleemoi · 28/07/2025 12:57

Definitely. Some men (and women, weirdly) just can’t help themselves.

I’ll shout you mid season to compare notes.

Im a massive football fan. I follow a PL team and have done for 45 years.

But the difference between you and me Is that I just love football. I’d watch any football match because I love the game. For instance, I’m going to watch a PL U21 team play my local non-league team on Saturday. It undoubtedly won’t be up to the standard of my beloved PL club, but will I enjoy it? Hell yes. Did I enjoy the game yesterday. Yes I did. I try and watch Every game in the men’s international competitions too (not just England games, every game). Because I love football.

These men who say they won’t watch women’s football because it’s not as good, are not football fans. They are fans of a particular club, not football. I’m sure most of them wouldn’t want to hear that - especially from a woman. And if they deny it and say they love football in general, then the only reason they have for dismissing the women’s game is that they are, as the op identified, sexist pricks.

Oh, without a doubt. I'm not a football fan in the slightest. I'll watch bits of the World Cup, the Euros, and that's it. The majority of football bores me to tears. I've tried watching the womens game, and it bores me in the same way watching a lower league game does.

Same with Tennis, mens game bores me, womens doesn't, so I watch the womens.

Rugby is a different matter, I'll enjoy watching a game of rugby no matter the quality of the teams playing. I enjoy watching my local womens team just as much as I did watching the Lions on Saturday.

FrippEnos · 28/07/2025 13:43

The thing is @Oddsocksanduglyshoes you have phrased your question in a very specific way so YANBU.
But I know as many women as men that say what you have put in your OP, does that make them sexist pricks as well?
Do their DDs deserve better?
Most of the men and women that I know who don't watch it, don't watch it because its not fast enough and claim that it is not as skillful.

As for those saying that it is being pushed/forced on us, wait another month and I am in no doubt that you will be saying the same about the rugby world cup.

I wish there was as much love for gymnastics, now that IS talent.

I think there's a huge amount of love for gymnastics isn't there? Granted, I didn't like the make up plastered faux sophistication for 6 year olds which is my local gymnastics club, so never encouraged my dds to do it, but one of them loved watching the Olympics gymnastics. Simone Biles is a megastar. Not a team sport so not really comparable to football, but love for one sport doesn't preclude love for another.

It's the amount of attention kicking a ball gets that annoys me, that and how hard it is to avoid!

It's really easy to avoid, unless a national team wins a big international title.

It is very easy to avoid.

The boxing analogy is so perfectly spot on.

Newbutoldfather · 31/07/2025 07:18

@JHound ,

But it doesn’t really work as an analogy. Lightweight boxers are actually quicker than heavyweights and outperform them in many skill measures (punches per second, movement quality etc).

That isn’t really true for women’s football. The Swiss national team recently got beaten 7-1 by a boy’s under 15 team. I doubt the under 15s are significantly heavier and stronger than the women.

Here is an actual paper analysing the differences. Of course a lot of it is down to size and speed, but things like passing accuracy is actually better in the men, and over longer distances.

Why is it hard to avoid? It's shown on two TV channels, maximum.

Lex345 · 31/07/2025 07:46

I love football, and watch the men's game religiously-but as much as it pains me to say it, the women's game is very far behind in quality and is just not as enjoyable to watch. It will take a long time for it to improve to gain anywhere near parity in following/pay/sponsorship/quality. I wish it wasn't true, and feels almost disloyal to say it, but if I am essentially giving something my undivided attention for a minimum of 90 minutes, I want to enjoy it.

I also think there is a reluctance to critique performances to the same level of the men's game-no one has a problem trashing the men's national team if they perform badly, but if the women's team is criticised, it is labelled as sexist/misogynistic. Which sometimes I accept may be the case, but it is allowed to call a bad performance just that, whether it is the men's or women's.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 31/07/2025 07:49

I have a football mad father, brother and now husband. I’ve watched a lot of men’s football (I quite like it but not mad for it). I don’t know if any of the people who say ‘drunk lads in the park can beat the women’s team’ have actually watched any men’s football - quite a lot of that is shit, too!

It is a different game to the men’s game, but it can be fun too. I was invested in this euros and I’m glad the lionesses won!

GrammarTeacher · 31/07/2025 08:10

And there are plenty of us who prefer the women’s game to the men’s for a variety of reasons. They’re different games and the lionesses are awesome!

The boxing analogy is so perfectly spot on.

A lightweight boxing is as skillful as a heavyweight. There is just a difference in strength.

But the best women's footballers are just not as skillful as men. It might hurt to say that but denying reality isn't helpful.

The majority of women prefer to watch men's football because of this.

FenderStrat · 31/07/2025 08:23

Denying 'your' reality, that should read.

LoopyLoo1991 · 31/07/2025 09:25

Boyfriend isn't a huge football fan, but will watch the odd game. However he'll never watch England play live - men's or women's - as every time he does, they seem to lose. So he'll find out the score and watch it later. He's a huge sci-fi fan and goes out of his way to be non sexist barring the odd bad joke.
I was busy catching up with a report for work, so only kept half an eye on the screen while it was on.

Sorry, but that's just a cheap shot with no basis. If you'd like to discuss, i'm very happy too, but just threaten insults like that is just really poor.

Radioundermypillow · 31/07/2025 10:00

It isn't an insult. It's just pointing out that, however much you declare it isn't so, skill is subjective.

And of course men's football gets more viewers. It's had literally billions thrown at over the last 50 years. It will probably always get more viewers than womens football. I'm not sure why that's relevant.

FenderStrat · 31/07/2025 10:42

Skill is not subjective.
