If you are single with no kids, who do you go on holiday with?

Just that, really. I’m at a stage in my life where I feel like I have nobody my own age to go on holiday with. Vast majority of friends are in relationships, some with kids, the one or two who aren’t aren’t close enough really for me to suggest going away together. I know I can go on holiday on my own and I have done many times in the past, it’s just gotten old tbh. Just curious how other single people handle it.

YABU - I have friends (or others) to go on holiday with
YANBU - I have no one my own age to go on holiday with

26, single. My brother, family or by myself :)

Octavia64 · 26/07/2025 23:04

My mum.

mostly on my own to be honest.

I go with single friends, siblings (sometimes their partners too), and solo, plus groups occasionally, although i prefer not to do this as tends to be rowdy and chaotic and the pace is set by the most active/energetic.

Out of all of these options, i really prefer solo travel as i think i concentrate on the experience more.

Last 4 years... (I'm 41)

Overseas
1 with my parents, sister & her 4 kids - week long family holiday, Europe, geared around the kids
2 with my parents - they went longer and I joined for 3-4 days. One was a European beach, the other a US city
1 with my sister, her husband and 5 kids - 4 nights, Europe
1 with a friend, 4 night city break, Europ
1 by myself, 2 night city break, Europe

UK
1 visiting friend, staying AirBnB, 2 nights

Other annual leave I'm just at home. I'm going to try and do another solo break this year but I find things like the evenings and meals hard. I can spend all day in a museum absolutely so happy, but can feel really lonely in the evenings. I'm not sure I'll ever get a long holiday (week plus) again for this reason.

The trick for eating out solo is to go early and take a book/kindle.

If I were single I am not sure I would have the courage to go on holiday on my own, though I can see that sometimes it might be relaxing just to do your own thing.
I think I would probably prefer to go on holidays specifically designed for people on their own. I might consider asking one of my single friends but I am not sure they would find me good company over the course of several days as I get easily stressed, which can be annoying to other people.

I tend to travel alone. I have friends but actually prefer to travel solo.

ellyeth · 26/07/2025 23:13

I would add that I have been on holiday with my son and his children, and it was wonderful - and a holiday with my teenage granddaughter, which was also lovely.

iamnotalemon · 26/07/2025 23:13

@JHound I’ve used G Adventures a few times and really loved them.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 26/07/2025 23:15

I have also been on city breaks with DS2 and DiL

Oh gawd, I’m in awe of all the ladies able to travel alone. I have zero sense of direction and the anxiety of getting lost overwhelms any excitement a holiday might bring. I have the financial means but no one to go with! 😩

That’s a shame that the anxiety prevents you from doing it. I also have no sense of direction! Weirdly I don’t get anxious about travelling alone (but maybe because I’ve been doing it a while), but put me on a date or in a room of people I don’t know in my area I don’t know, eek.

Also don't assume people wouldn't go on holiday with you if they are married or have kids. I have a family and would still happily go away with a single friend for a long weekend.

Me too!

GreatTheCat · 26/07/2025 23:22

I'm single and both my kids have grown up. I medically retired 2 years ago aged 50. I don't/won't fly.
So I go on cruises. I've been on 4 this year, all around a month.

Friends have been with me (separately) but only for a week or two because they don't have much A/L.

NeedZzzzzssss · 27/07/2025 00:17

Pay for it myself, although they will bring food etc. I do it because I want their company. I invite different people each time, friends and family

@LouisaJG sorry forgot to quote you. They will often contribute money as well, but I don't ask/expect/want it.

Maddy70 · 27/07/2025 01:03

I'm married but always have a holiday with friends so that's an option. My single friends have joined a meet up group that organised holidays she loves them

Caligirl80 · 27/07/2025 01:25

Typically go by myself! It's awesome! Throughly delightful! And I've got enough buddies in different countries that I can always pop by and see someone/have a catch up etc etc wherever it is I may be going.
Vacationing alone is bliss - you get to do exactly what you want whenever you want - and you get to meet lots of new people along the way.

Sounds like you would benefit from going on some solo trips now. Just go! New York city is a great place to go explore - easy to get flights and hotels, and loads of stuff to do - just go!
If you want somewhere closer, take the eurostar to Paris or Brugges. Utterly lovely places to walk around and explore.
