If you are single with no kids, who do you go on holiday with?

Just that, really. I’m at a stage in my life where I feel like I have nobody my own age to go on holiday with. Vast majority of friends are in relationships, some with kids, the one or two who aren’t aren’t close enough really for me to suggest going away together. I know I can go on holiday on my own and I have done many times in the past, it’s just gotten old tbh. Just curious how other single people handle it.

YABU - I have friends (or others) to go on holiday with
YANBU - I have no one my own age to go on holiday with

I'm single with no children or friends, I either holiday on my own or have previously been on group holidays. It can be lonely but for me so is being in a house on my own but on holiday I get a change of scenery and depending on the destination some sunshine.

Kendodd · 26/07/2025 21:28

Does that work?

It certainly did. Admittedly, this was a while ago, but I had some all inclusive holidays for hardly any money at all.

I also did some "accommodation allocated on arrival" trips which didn't bother me either, and again got fabulous deals.

Think all inclusive in Tunisia for sub £200 for a week, including flights. Ditto Greece.

I used to go to a travel agent with a packed bag, and say "I can be at the airport in an hour, where can I go?"

I had some fabulous holidays.

I’d love to hear more about this!! Where have you been? Did you get things at an enormous discount because it was so last minute?

With my dog.

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 26/07/2025 21:39

I’m going on my own next month but have done a couple of group holidays that I have really enjoyed.

Also don't assume people wouldn't go on holiday with you if they are married or have kids. I have a family and would still happily go away with a single friend for a long weekend.

Me too and not just a weekend. I’ve gone for 3 weeks before. Admittedly the kid is a teenager. But I like backpacking-around-Namibia type holidays and DH and DD like pool-beach-a/c type. So I go with my female friend.

Last 4 years... (I'm 41)

Overseas
1 with my parents, sister & her 4 kids - week long family holiday, Europe, geared around the kids
2 with my parents - they went longer and I joined for 3-4 days. One was a European beach, the other a US city
1 with my sister, her husband and 5 kids - 4 nights, Europe
1 with a friend, 4 night city break, Europ
1 by myself, 2 night city break, Europe

UK
1 visiting friend, staying AirBnB, 2 nights

Other annual leave I'm just at home. I'm going to try and do another solo break this year but I find things like the evenings and meals hard. I can spend all day in a museum absolutely so happy, but can feel really lonely in the evenings. I'm not sure I'll ever get a long holiday (week plus) again for this reason.

Thanks for your reply. I only book AirBnBs now when I travel as I’m definitely done with solo dining out (not saying there’s anything wrong with it and I have done it in the past, I am just personally done). I personally find if you can make a meal at home, or order takeaway/UberEats if you want to try local cuisine, and watch a film or show, the evenings are ok. But I’m sorry you find them tough.

I've done :

All inclusive 5* fly and flop - always with a gym, adult pool, beach, so there is enough to do - 5 days is a good length

Holiday with single friend and her small child (similar to above)

Activity type holidays - pilates, yoga, hiking, cycling type things

This / next year, am doing a fly and flop before Christmas, as its so nice to get some winter sun before the actual winter. If I had funds I would find a group skiing trip, but not next year. I'm thinking of doing a year of a few shorter European breaks next year, then another fly and flop. After that I would like to get more adventurous, I have a group cycle trip that I saw that looked great. I'd also love to do a tour of Japan as it looks so different. I would also love to do Iceland as I booked that for my 40th then ....Covid.

I'm lucky that I have family in a nice part of the UK so can easily holiday there for very little cost. I also travelled a lot in my 20s with friends.

I've also had my eye on home swapping type things as a way of travelling at lower cost.

StrawberrySquash · 26/07/2025 22:15

Other single friends. And sometimes friends with kids and we've all gone away in a group including the kids. Did have a plan for a weekend away with a friend who was going to leave the kids at home too, but we've not yet round to planning anything.

Sounds like you may still be at the kids a bit too small to leave stage though. Or bring and not have to cater to toddler naptimes etc.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 26/07/2025 22:16

I used to go away with friends, occasionally one in a relationship would be up for it, sometimes one would be dating a teacher or something. Or my wider family including their kids. There is always someone who is newly single or free

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 26/07/2025 22:17

Also, I always wanted to do a boot camp in Mallorca or a yoga retreat in Portugal

WanderingGiraffe · 26/07/2025 22:19

Sometimes solo, sometimes with family or friends and sometimes with a small group tour - can vouch for Intrepid and G Adventures - done lots of trips with both and always had a great time!

If you’re active Neilson-type holidays also can help you meet other active people through activities.

LouisaJG · 26/07/2025 20:10

Hah - I often think there should be some sort of exchange system for single women and married mums where we swap lives for one day a week! One group has too much solitude and the other not enough, it seems badly balanced

Where do I sign mine up?!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/07/2025 22:20

I have kids but I’m a single parent and the kids are getting old, so soon I’ll be in a similar boat.

I do love going on holiday alone when I get the chance and have also been with friends. I would and have happily gone with other family too.

What I’d really like is more money for holidays of all kinds! 😂

LadyLolaRuben · 26/07/2025 22:23

Friends, family members, friends who travel with business and I tag along for a few days to keep them company. Book cottage and have open house inviting people on a rota

JHound · 26/07/2025 22:26

Friends

Myself

Occasionally with family.

NeedZzzzzssss · 26/07/2025 22:27

Friends, family or solo. Have quite a few single, childless friends so that helps. Often will rent a big place out over a couple of weeks and invite people to stay

MuffinsAreJustCakesAtBreakfast · 26/07/2025 22:28

My mum and my dog ❤️🐶

I travel solo these days I love it. I'm very selfish about my holidays. I can also recommend companies like Exodus and Intrepid I've had some good trips with them

I make check them out. I prefer solo travel but fhere are some trips I would prefer to do in a group.

ThinWomansBrain · 26/07/2025 22:29

Myself, with my cat, with friends or my sister.

Quite enjoy a week away with my cat and inviting people for a day or two - it breaks up the week, but a whole week of someone when you are used to living alone is usually a bit much.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 26/07/2025 22:34

My sister...we are both single and retired.

Mustreadabook · 26/07/2025 22:37

I'm not single, but I sometimes go on holiday with single friends. Some of your friends with kids might be desperate to get away, and the best way to do any adventurous holidays in the early years is to leave your partner behind to look after the kids!

Do you pay for the cottage yourself, or ask guests to contribute?
