Malnourished starving children in Gaza

The photos that appeared this morning on my news updates of mothers holding their children, dying of starvation and extreme malnutrition in Gaza have absolutely broken my heart. I am not particularly news focused, of course I’ve followed it all but this morning it has stopped me in my tracks and took my breath away. As a mother of a 3yo DS who is sleeping peacefully in his bedroom, whilst we have a fridge full of food downstairs and a life of peace, I feel so sorry that those poor mothers and children are living this hell so undeserved and also so so lucky we have the peace we do…
I don’t really know what the point of my post is; I suppose I’m screaming When Will This End inside and want to tell everyone to not take the freedom and peace we have for granted; use your right to vote and use your privilege to make informed choices that steer the world away from conflict towards peace…

Sending a handhold to all the mothers’ whose lives are not being lived in peace and whose children are suffering 🕊️💔

OK, if you don't trust the Guardian, the Times, the Daily Express, the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 or Sky News who have all reported on the starving and malnourished babies and children in Gaza, which news sources do you trust?

Agreed - please can we start sharing the independent/trustworthy sources people are using who are totally pro-Israel and don’t see any wrongdoing / believe that a smear campaign is going on by the British Media. It would be really helpful for me (and maybe others) to understand what is shaping your viewpoint as I’m struggling to see the actions of Israel’s government and army as anything but criminal.

If the Guardian was my only source on the Israel-Gaza war, and if I only tuned into the BBC or TikTok, I might be in the streets chanting against Israel too.

OP: when you manipulate context, cherry-pick images—many of which are clearly staged, fake, or recycled from war zones like Syria (I’ve even caught The Times publishing contrived photos)—and prioritise a narrative over truth, you’re not reporting the news; you’re manufacturing consent for hate. We see the consequences of this daily here in MN, it’s evident on this very board.

And until we confront the media's role in anti-Israel bias and fuelling antisemitism, the truth will never get to see the light of day and it will be impossible to stop the tidal wave of hate.

I actually think the lot you are making life much, much harder for Palestinians and are part of the problem - your misplaced outrage is fuel for Hamas which is prolonging this war. That is shameful.

Even Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, doesn’t do the wild propaganda I see here by pro-Netanyahu zealots. There’s criticism and wide evidence of unhappiness with the Israeli government approach in that newspaper. One article in particular will make the likes of you and Dangermoo combust.

Children will lose weight and look undernourished well before the adults do even if the adults eat nothing

Do you think that this woman is eating nothing?

I think support for Israel would evaporate overnight if Gaza released the hostages, and definitely if they surrendered Hamas but (Israel) then didn’t stop its military offensive. Rarely has a suffering party had such a means to end its own suffering, but choose not to. Yes, the poor children, but those kids have dads, brothers, uncles who either weren’t considering the consequences or didn’t care when they perpetrated Oct 7th; parents awash with ‘River to the Sea’ doctrine, celebrating dead children as ‘martyrs’, who have not ceased shelling Israel from the day of Gaza’s creation. Once again, Gaza provided a perfect opportunity for Israel to stamp this ‘irritant’ out.

Given the provocation and the means to retaliate, every one of us would have done the same.

And the neighbours? Nothing to see here. Whatever we think, many see Israel as doing the local ‘dirty work’. They also appear not to care about starving children. And have seen the arch disrupter in the area, Iran, subsequently humbled. Remember, this kicked off because Iran needed to destabilise the growing cooperation between Saudi, the UAE and Israel. And found willing proxies in these children’s parents.

Hamas, well fed in their tunnels and Doha, still control the narrative within Gaza, Israel on the border.

It is clear that much of the world while saddened by unwise choices countries make, paid for by their own kids, know that the only way this ends is Gaza recognising Israel’s right to exist, (which would also created stronger international condemnation of illegal West Bank settlements), and ceases proxying for bad faith actors. Me weeping over (sometimes) AI generated images or waving flags on Western European streets does not achieve that.

I save my despair for the desperate mothers of Sudan who really have no way out for themselves and children.

How are Gaza meant to ‘surrender Hamas’? They haven’t even voted for them since the early 2000s and they weren’t even the majority leaders in those elections.

In every war, there are dads, brothers, uncles etc who fight. But there is a difference between acts of war and war crimes. Israel has failed to protect innocent people during military operations and destroyed entire towns in a manner that is not proportionate to the military risk Israel faces. Netanyahu and his former defence minister are the subject of arrest warrants for war crimes issued by the International Criminal Court.

I find it sad that you have decided that some starving children are more entitled to your empathy than others. I would assume all starving children are equal but you clearly rank them which sounds rather dehumanising.

How about this woman? Any explanation why she has a perfect normal looking todder, is of normal weight herself, but has one clearly very undernourished child? Gaza Family

I've purposely avoided the news (pathetic, I know) and saw scenes today that made me die inside. A population being starved, skeletal babies and children clinging on for dear life, too weak to even cry. I really need to do more, my lack of mobilization makes me complicit. These children are equal to our own 💔

Do you mean www.knesset.gov.il? If so, I’m not sure they can be considered independent or impartial in this conflict. Of course, I will have a look but I’d appreciate some additional sources that don’t end in gov.il

What a stupid teacher. There is no comparison. What are the Israeli children supposed to think? Their country is constantly under attack despite efforts to protect themselves and agree to ceasefires. Hamas are always the ones pushing boundaries and starting everything up again. Are children supposed to learn they should not protect themselves from these attacks? This is nothing like Hitler.

War is cruel and those who tragically suffer are the innocents. Hamas could stop it tomorrow but they are getting well fed.

Israel could stop it today

It's not independent or impartial. The poster asked what was shaping pro Israel viewpoints.

Fuck me. There's no end to some people's depravity. Posting a picture of a famished child to make a point about a woman's size. I'm sick to death of these gouls.

Sorry - in my post I asked for independent sources to help me understand their viewpoint as I can’t believe people who are totally pro-Israel don’t at least try and find sources beyond the Israeli government to support their views.

It is actually embarrassing that you looked through images of starving people to find a person who fit your narrative. I’m sure you had to scroll past at least a couple of very thin children to find the perfect imagine - you must be very proud of yourself.

You're not going to find any independent and impartial sources that give a pro Israel viewpoint. The closest I know is https://www.haaretz.com/

Haaretz | Israel News, the Middle East and the Jewish World - Haaretz.com

Haaretz.com - Breaking News, Analysis and Opinion From Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish World - Haaretz

The ONLY reverse image search results for this picture are pro-Israel twitter accounts, lots and lots of them, many suggesting she ate her other children, among other horrific comments.

And the UN! At this point we should just do away with international law as they all seem to be fronts for Hamas.

Are you afraid of the truth? For anyone else who doesn't want to click. It's a photograph of a woman in Gaza holding a malnourised child. She is of normal weight as is the other child standing in the photo. I think it's legitimate to ask how only one child is starving here? Does she feed herself and the other child? Does the malnourished child have a metabolic disease etc. etc.
The important point about this is that a cropped photo showing only the malnourished child was on the front page of the Daily Express.

If you actually look at the photo - it's got a label from Al Quds News on it. That means it came from a Palestinian Arabic newpaper which is published in Jerusalem. How do you explain that?

Your implying that the women is starving her own child. That's as bad as the people posting yesterday that is was ok to kill the Gazan babies in case they grow up to be terrorists. Absolutely shocking what people think.

What's your explanation?

That Israel is committing the war crime of starving populations. This isn't just my explanation it is that of the International Criminal Court. If it is untrue why doesn't Netanyahu defend himself to them. When this is over hopefully every member of the IDF that has committed war crimes will be prosecuted, and before you ask of course this also applies to Hamas.

Why does a random post by a random mumsnetter in the UK make anyone distrust Israel?

As an aside, I've been accused of being an Israeli agent on here which is hilarious and horrifying in equal measure. It's not like I post on this topic often, I'm literally a random who might post on a thread or two on active.

We’re all randoms. This awful situation provokes very strong feelings, obviously.
