NC'd for this for obvious reasons but it's a real bugbear of mine and happens on almost every thread.

OP will include "currently staying at MIL's house in a rural area with no takeaways/delivery options" and then outline a problem with being able to get dinner because the shops are driving distance and she's over the limit only to discover all the food in the fridge/freezer is off. Every bloody comment will be "why don't you just order a takeaway?" and, more often than not, it's "Jesus! Order a takeaway and unclench OP 🙄It's not hard!!"

OP will write a post saying they have a problem at work or with a nursery or with a builder and say "nothing in the contract about it" or "we didn't have a contract on paper" or whatever it is. And every other response will be "check your contract" - and, again, usually as if the OP is stupid.

And it's not just in response to the OP. On a post about someone breaking their leg, a PP will comment with a story about breaking their arm and how they were advised to use a certain product. Another person will reply "that doesn't help with a broken arm" and the PP will respond with evidence that it does help with a broken arm - just for a dozen posters to go "OP DOESN'T HAVE A BROKEN ARM, WHY ARE YOU PROVIDING LINKS ABOUT BROKEN ARMS!?!?!" and completely missing that they were discussing broken arms at the time.

A post asking for recipes and will mention DS has a dairy allergy. Someone will recommend a recipe with dairy in but will say "I know it has sour cream, do you have a dairy-free equivalent?" and a dozen posters will kick off about "THAT HAS SOUR CREAM IN IT!"

It honestly exhausts me that it feels like most posters can't read. I swear it didn't used to be this bad - I feel like every post has posters just not reading and then getting irate at others because of their own inability to read, and usually being really bloody rude too. Is it just me?!

I prefer the electrified cattle prod option.

Yeah I only skim read too 🤣

Cancel the cheque!!!

(sorry)
But yes it is annoying when someone makes a smarmy comment when the OP has already explained

RitaFires · 25/07/2025 19:29

Loads of OP's start with their child's age and whatever problem they have. And then get loads asking how old is your DC?

Even better when it's "how can we help you if we don't know how old DC is?🙄" or, my personal favourite "DD is in Y1 at school and struggling with her handwriting" "YABU, why are you expecting your 1yo to be able to write?!"

People don't seem to be able to assimilate information any more. I have to get Non-disclosure docs signed quite often. I send the doc with a mail - asking them to complete the highlighted parts and return to me with the email address and name of the signatory at their end. To me this is a very simple instruction. 90% of the time they do something entirely different. It drives me bananas.

ShiftingSand · 25/07/2025 19:43

Completely agree with you about the people who don’t read the original post properly. I would add to that the people who deliberately (or maybe not?) misunderstand the point the op is trying to make. They’re usually asking an opinion about a social issue but everyone piles on with, “why do you care?, mind your own business, how does this affect you?”
It’s like we’re not allowed to have a discussion about anything without causing upset, so it’s turned back onto the poster who just wanted some opinions.

ThatBoldBear · 25/07/2025 19:45

I don’t see the big deal myself, if she wants to call it a turtle when it’s really a tortoise then let her get on with it.

Yes - I hate this. Or when they pick on one little bit - OP will make a whole post about going to a birthday party and getting a present in the morning and coming home after the party and making dinner and the oven being broken and does anyone know how to fix it and every response will say "why did you buy the present immediately before the party? You should be more organised"

With you all the way @Canyoureadthough. I'm someone who posts RTFT too often, which probably annoys people (but maybe not as much as "first post nails it as usual" annoys me!)

At least RTFT is gentler than "can't you read?!"

Where will you draw the line though? Want an IQ test as well for users?

I think you have to accept that it’s a chat forum used by anyone who signs up. Some people are busy, others lack comprehension skills.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 25/07/2025 20:07

Totally agree with you & I've started to notice this in real life conversations between people too.

I wonder if it's the 'instant no focus effect' as in that we're so used to having/seeing everything now, combined with doomscrolling on your phone jumping from topic to topic so no focus, topped off with a lack of critical thinking.

It's not just the younger generation I've noticed that older people are starting to do this too.

In a nutshell internet doomscrolling/social media/too much information is making us stupider (and affecting our sleep problems - that might be the biggest contributor to our brain melts)

saltinesandcoffeecups · 25/07/2025 20:12

Why are you worried about getting takeaway for your builder when you have a broken leg? I understand he’s lactose intolerant but try this recipe for chicken salad:

  • whole, cut up fryer chicken
  • to 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • green onions, chopped
  • to 3 cups grapes, halved
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Ground black pepper, to taste
  • Small handful fresh dill, minced
  • Cayenne pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds

My Workplace have been advised that any information released to adults has a reading age equivalent of a nine year old. Basic comprehension and inference skills are severely lacking in the general population. Obviously on a parenting forum such as this one, this is compounded by the fact that people are skim-reading, multi-tasking, have kids distracting them etc.

This comes from the attacks on drip feeding or not giving examples that are clear and evidenced enough

And then you get told you're aggressive, can't accept the answers you're given, you're rude... It's infuriating and honestly feels like it's the majority sometimes who can't understand anything.
