43 yrs married.....the last 10 iv led my own life due to him prefering booze and his mates.
Decided to divorce him only now hes been diagnosed with alzheimers.
I no longer have my life and feel suffocated.
He's still quite high functioning but has no awareness of finances or emotions....I just wanna leave even if it means I lose the house!!!!

are there children? Does he have family who can help him?

talk to a lawyer and start getting things in order to leave.

@Greencarrott you have options, depending on how advanced the alzheimers you won't lose your home, should he have to go into care.

Do you have any support, at all?

I do feel for you, such difficult circumstances, you can still have your own life though.

Social services are there to support and develop a care plan (with a lot of pushing though)

There is light for you, check this for available resources

eta; if he still has capacity, get a lasting power of attorney

Standardpain · 25/07/2025 06:43

It's entirely possible that his heavy drinking may have contributed to him developing alzheimers.
Personally I think you are justified in going ahead with your plans for divorce.
Certainly you should take legal advice to find out where you stand.

That's very sad for you OP. I'd go ahead as others have suggested and cut ties now before you're suddenly his 24/7 carer

Greencarrott · 28/07/2025 09:54

Thank you.
He has no insight into his diagnosis but still retains capacity.
Refuses care package so not entitled to SW.
He 64.
Doesn't want a POA as there's nowt wrong with him. Aaarrrgghhh!!!
