To think the west should intervene and stop the horrors in Gaza? Why aren’t they?

Every day we are seeing images of starving children and hearing of constant attacks on civilians, often trying to get basic aid like food and water. This is clearly a genocide. Why isn’t anyone doing anything to stop it? It pains my heart to see. I can’t imagine the suffering people are experiencing there.

Israel is supported by the US, so taking it on means taking on the States. Our trade with Israel is worth a lot of money and admitting what's happening means that international law kicks in and we have to take action. One of which would be to stop supplying weapon parts.

Although people are using whatabouttery when they mention other horrors, we have a healthy relationship with China despite it currently ethnic cleansing the Uyghurs and its numerous human rights violations. We don't always do the right thing.

Israel is the west.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/07/2025 10:28

Complicated history. (WW2, we controlled Palestine and we're involved in setting up Israel, lack of response to previous wars setting a precedent)

Politics. Lots of Jewish people in the US for example, who vote. Politicians want votes.

Alliances. (Look at other stuff our allies do that would be unacceptable from other countries we are not allied to)

Recent history.

Economics (arms sales, agricultural imports)

Israel are active militarily in the region and some governments might find this action by proxy useful if it's against those supported by the other lot . (Ie countries considered enemies by Western countries)

Human nature, reluctance to get involved. Knowledge if they do get involved in could go terribly wrong and escalate quickly as there are lots of interested parties in the region.

I'm glad to see that the Daily Express is now covering this genocide and the forced starvation of the remaining population.
It beggars belief that this is allowed to happen in modern times and the international community is doing zilch.
We all have blood on our hands
The Israeli regime is absolutely monstrous abhorrent and inhumane
The blood lust is quite extraordinary

BallerinaRadio · 24/07/2025 10:36

I think it basically boils down to, and it's shameful to even suggest this but I can't see any other reason, the fact that it's people with brown skin getting killed and not white. Which is absolutely shameful.

You want to drag us into what would soon become a world war?
Ukraine is not a Nato member and we don't have the resources or obligation to fight every regime we don't like the look of

Confusdworriedmum · 24/07/2025 10:39

Unpopular view I know but I would rather we sorted out the shit in our own country first. Do you think there aren't people, including children who don't get much to eat, especially in the holidays? Do you think we should sort out the NHS, education system and SEN provisions? Shouldn't we work on removing drugs and grooming gangs,?
Horrific shit going elsewhere but we need to sort ourselves out and then worry about other countries.

It's really sad that this recent conflict was kicked off by Hamas invading Isreal and slaughtering over a thousand adults and children, civilians. I saw they even tied together one parent and child before setting them on fire. The x-ray was heartbreaking.

So in a lot of people's minds, who don't understand the longer term picture, they just kinda think well, FAFO. Both sides have and are committing atrocities. You can't really blame a country for fighting back and trying to get rid of people that will form another incursion at the earliest opportunity.

It's extremely sad for all of the civilians involved, considering the majority of people in Gaza today weren't even born when Hamas came into power. My heart breaks seeing what they are going through. But I can see why people think Isreal is justified.

It's such a complex topic people just switch off I think. And people are growing numb because of the atrocities that take place the world over, for millennia. We just know about them more now. Ukraine got such a groundswell of support because they were invaded by Russia. Palestine, not so much, when they invaded Isreal first.

The common person has so much going on in their own life it's hard to dredge up support for something going on so far away that is nothing to do with them. But when people do open their eyes, it's very hard to identify a clear victim.

There's a whole board for this stuff.

The post is about Gaza. Not Ukraine.

If the West intervened, they would be called imperialists and colonialists and blamed as soon as anything goes wrong.

People in this region have constantly fought each other on religious and tribal basis since before the Romans, it’s not us, it’s really them.

Either side has committed such atrocities during the long history of this conflict there is no « good » or « bad » side, they’re both awful.

Things always worsen because the same thing always happens: as soon as there’s a negotiation or a truce, some extremists of one or either side will break it, ruining every chance of negotiation.

Both sides also weaponise their civilian population, creating thousands of victims, hatred, blurring the lines between political differences and absolute war. Been like that since before 1949 in dozens of examples and this new iteration, the most horrific of all.

Back in the days of Antiquity, they sometimes used duels, my champion fights your champion, in order to solve conflicts without hurting civilians. I wish it would come back in the modern world.

But the conflict in the ME will never be solved because both sides act without decency or honour and fight very dirty.

It is a men’s conflict because whatever extremist side is gonna win, Hamas or ultra-conservative Israelis, women will be oppressed in the name of religion.

I feel as horrified by the mass starvation in Gaza as I have been by the October 7th attack. Both are barbaric.

But taking a political side because « it’s the good one », it’s not possible, it’s not true and it only adds fuel to the flames.

Why should it not be openly discussed on the main board with the most traffic on mumsnet- there’s a constant agenda on here to get posts moved or shut down when it’s something people are worried about and want to discuss.

God, sorry if some of us care about mass starvation and genocide. Sorry it’s a bloody inconvenience away from talking about shopping and cats 🙄
